Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, charged over same-sex relationship with 14-year-old classmate,

Featured Replies

I see both sides, but to be honest its my kid that is 14 and If I ask you to stay away, for whatever reason....you need to take my advice and do so....... The girl chose not to, and there you have it......14 year olds are not old enough to make life long deciscions yet..... they can't vote, drive, or by beer, its not okay for you to approve of them banging an 18 year old.... Gay or not gay... I know it happens...but doesn't make it right.

The story in the link doesn't state whether they told her to stay away or not. She's charged with two counts so that is two incidents isn't it? Kaitlyn was kicked off of the basketball team and eventually expelled over the relationship and then when she turned 18 they pressed charges on her. I'm not seeing anything saying they continued their relationship. Just some parents mad their daughter is gay is all I see.

Hey I agree with you, look at times then....they were also not having sex til they were married, and a man could get a job to support his family while they stayed home to work... I guess you would be cool with your daughter hooking up and having sex at age 14 huh??? Do not really see your point. Marriage and sex two different things as well.

is it, sex at 14 is sex at 14 isnt it.

14 could be a middle schooler too guys.... I like the law, gives parents the power which to me is a good thing...

Not in this case. In this case one was 17 the other was 14 and the word classmates is in the story as well as them being teammates.

Not to tie multiple past threads together but, were are talking about High School Right. Imagine what is happening with all the Holdbacks that are in high school and turning 19 their senior year. Just some food for thought.

Exactly.

Like I said I can see both sides. But again, I just do not see the benefit in changing any lawy that deters, a 14 year old from having sex....I have two boys, I see them noticing young girls and such, but that is a risk, and I would advise them to stay away.

This law would allow parents of a white child who disapprove of their child's relationship with a black child to have too much power.

This law says 12-16 is against the law. My son is biracial and his girlfriend is white. They have been together for about 2 years now. He was 17 and she was 15 when they got together. His birthday is April and hers is in May. For a brief time he was 18 and she was 16. Her mother disapproved of the relationship and she told us she disapproved because of their different skin tones. By what you're saying she has the power to press charges on my son during that one month period because parents having power is a good thing. Parents having power isn't always a good thing.

It's naive to believe kids are thinking about the law when they have sex. There has to be some common sense surrounding these laws.

This is a tough situation due to the fact that they are classmates and both high school students. I realize that the law is the law, but I have always been one to say that issues need to be interpreted to the situation at hand. There is another motive here and it is not just the age of the students. I don't have an opinion either way on the same sex issue, but I do know that intimate relationships happen everyday with school age young adults. We would be naïve to think otherwise. I don't know what the ratio of over 18 seniors is per class at any given high school, but in relationship to the rest of the student body, I would say it is pretty small. That being said, the "legal" dating pool for 18 year old students becomes pretty slim. And what about a "grandfather clause" for students who are not 18, but then turn 18 during the course of an ongoing relationship? Very tough situation. Honestly, I think there may need to be special provisions to the law to address adult high school students. Yes, they do get certain freedoms when their birthday passes, but as we all know, having a birthday does not always represent immediate maturity. Especially when they interact on a daily basis with these other students. I remember when I was an 18 year old senior. I was still not allowed to write myself notes for missing a day of school. I needed one from my parents.

Agree, especially considering in KY the law was changed to alter the age of consent (to 18) for 16 and 17 year olds when the other person/sex partner is in a position of authority or special trust.

Additionally, we have Suzanne's law which requires law enforcement to treat 18, 19, and 20 year old adults as "minors" when they are believed to be missing.

And on tangent, a 30/40/50/60 year old woman or man can have sex with a 16 year old male or female because 16 is the age of consent in Kentucky.

Finally, here is a good link on the law in KY:

No, it allows parents to abuse another law in order to help ease their embarrassment. Sexual abuse is one thing, a rebelious child is another. This is an abuse of a law intended to protect CHILDREN, not a family's social image.

I'm guessing the parents are not happy that their daughter is a lesbian, so they are using the law to strike back. You think?

I don't know, but I sure think.

Hard to tell with what was written in this article, but I tend to agree.

Couple of points or questions on this thread for me.

What is considered "sex"? We are talking 2 girls here. Intercourse could not have been the issue? Since Wireman only held hands and hugged he was OK to do so, but at what point (or making it to what base) is considered breaking the law?

There was a local prosecutor (current Judge) who made the big time on Sally Jessie Rafael because he convicted a older man for impregnating his wife. He married her at 14 and when she became pregnant, he was arrested. She was not pregnant prior to the marriage. She did not have consent by her legal guardian so he was convicted.

I also remember a local NKY area senior who was approached by a freshman lady asking him to see his legendary "stuff" and he more than obliged and was arrested.

Law is the law, I advised my son the do's and don'ts when he turned 18.

I see your point, and I see the abuse of power that can happen and probably does happen. But I think that a judge or a jury should be trusted to keep those things from getting out of control. Kids need to understand when you make certain choices you sometimes lose rights....such as these instances. You put yourself at the mercy of others. I am not sure what the law reads word for word. But I see nothing wrong with a parent being able to press charges on an adult 18 for messing around with his 14 year old...which could be a middle school student... what is the execptal line??? If that is not it....should it be set at a school grade or what, what would be the common sense change to the law.

There is getting in trouble, and there is getting stigmatized for life. That is what the result of this is. The choice here wasn't to cheat on a test, or rob a convenient store. This was a sexual escapade between a high school Senior and Freshman where, it appears, both parties were happy to oblige in. If that is the case, then the parents of the 14 year-old need to take this up with their child. It took two to tango.

Do you realize what happens when you get classified as a Sex Offender. In this situation, you are ok with that?

There are a lot of factors that can go on in a 14 year old mind......Have you ever taught or worked with 14 year olds??? They are very impressionable and easily swayed one way or another...just go to a local school and see how the social groups and roles of each kid can be manipulated by others.... I just think something needs to be in place to protect kids at that age...again I asked what are the common sense changes to the law??? I am open to hear them.
