I say it is the law. If this was an 18 year boy having a relationship with a 14 year old girl society would be outraged. But, since it's a girl many see it differently.

The 14 year old's parents are vindicative people who are refusing to acknowledge their child's role in this situation and using the law to punish the 18 year old. And I would feel the same if it was a boy and a girl. Half of my high school would be registered sex offenders if parents acted like these did. Seniors and freshmen hook up yearly across the nation by the hundreds of thousands. These parents are using the law to ruin a child's life.

So where's the cut off? This isn't a child and I really get tired of people describing and 18 year old as such. When you're 18 you're legally an adult. You willingly accept all the "benefits" of that designation, you also accept the responsibilities and limitations that go along with that designation. Maybe Seniors and freshmen hook up yearly across the nation by the hundreds of thousands as you say. Instead of turning a blind eye maybe the law should be enforced more. I'll refer you to the thread about the Mother who punished her bully daughter by making her wear thrift store clothes. We (collective we as in society) need to stop enabling bad behavior from young adults with excuses like everyone does it or there still just children themselves.

To sit and wait for a kid that your child is seeing to turn 18 so you can express your outrage is conniving. Not to mention, you can't put 18 year olds and 14 year olds in the same building, call it a school and not expect them to interact. That's lunacy.

And that other thread has nothing to do with this. I'll refer you to the same thread to go and look at my comments in that thread. These are two separate issues.

The law is the law. That being said, I dated a freshman when I was a senior. Of course, holding hands and hugging isn't against the law. :thumb:

This is a tough situation due to the fact that they are classmates and both high school students. I realize that the law is the law, but I have always been one to say that issues need to be interpreted to the situation at hand. There is another motive here and it is not just the age of the students. I don't have an opinion either way on the same sex issue, but I do know that intimate relationships happen everyday with school age young adults. We would be naïve to think otherwise. I don't know what the ratio of over 18 seniors is per class at any given high school, but in relationship to the rest of the student body, I would say it is pretty small. That being said, the "legal" dating pool for 18 year old students becomes pretty slim. And what about a "grandfather clause" for students who are not 18, but then turn 18 during the course of an ongoing relationship? Very tough situation. Honestly, I think there may need to be special provisions to the law to address adult high school students. Yes, they do get certain freedoms when their birthday passes, but as we all know, having a birthday does not always represent immediate maturity. Especially when they interact on a daily basis with these other students. I remember when I was an 18 year old senior. I was still not allowed to write myself notes for missing a day of school. I needed one from my parents.

I would have to agree with PP92. If this wasn't a lesbian relationship, everyone would be turning a blind eye to it. I would bet that somewhere in that same high school, there is an 18 year old boy dating a younger girl or vice versa.

By this law I know multiple kids(including my own) who broke this law and are still with their girlfriends as well. This is a stupid interpretation and enforcement of the law IMO.

By the same token if it wasn't a lesbian relationship would it be drawing this much attention or would it be just another case of an 18 year old ADULT who did something stupid, got caught and paid a price?

I'm guessing the parents are not happy that their daughter is a lesbian, so they are using the law to strike back. You think?

This is ridiculous. I realize that statutory rape laws are in place for a reason. However, legislature's couldn't have intended for high school seniors to have to register as Sex Offenders for life for having a relationship w/ a Freshman. It can't be. I don't condone sex in high school, or before marriage. However, to ruin the young woman's life for something that was consentual??? Doesn't seem very just.

But your parents could not sign your forms at the doctor's office. Kind of like being stuck on the elevator between two floors.

Absolutely.
