Did Boone County suspend Coach Fookes?

Featured Replies

Score one for humiliating kids and violating an individual's privacy.

I find it amazing people think like this - much less admit it in public.

With all due respect.....cry me a river!!

I beg to differ. If a male teacher asked a boy to open his shorts many people, myself included, would have been shocked. Anyone in this day and age should know that you would only be asking for major trouble to put yourself in that situation.

That's the problem.

I'm all for a ruler across the head when you "act the fool", you straighten a clown out pronto. When our parents and grandparents were in school happened all the time and they were not "scared for life".

This is not my area of expertise so I am asking you hoops5 and everyone for that matter, is Virtus Training ever training associated/mandated with public school employees?

I cannot answer as an employee. But I can answer as a parent volunteer for both the public and the private schools.

Catholic school volunteers---Background check and 3 or 4 hour training followed monthly online training bulletins that you must read, answer some questions and submit.

Public school volunteers (I can only speak for elem. school)---Background check and 20 minute training.

Not criticizing the public schools. (Because frankly, the Catholic school Virtus training can be a time consuming hassle. :lol2:)

All my time with the Virtus training, and that inner alarm goes off telling me that the "alleged" actions described in this thread is not ok.

That's the problem.

Actually this day and age is not the problem. Maybe we should discuss the "good old days" and what when on up on the hill and how much those in charge prioritized the welfare of children.

That's the problem.

I'm all for strict discipline and even a ruler across the head but come on, it is NEVER appropriate to have a student bare their private parts. Parents and society have told these kids multiple times not to do this for anyone except parents and doctors and that is sound advice. I won't speak to this specific situation because all I know is hearsay but an adult should never ever put themselves or the student in that position.

Fortunately there really isn’t a debate here. I doubt there is a school district in NKY that thinks what was alleged here is appropriate or would allow it.

Had a school employee slammed one of my children into a locker or strip-searched them, I would probably be requesting a big chunk of the school board's money.

Right after moving the child to another school.

That's the problem.

And how would you feel if your employer did this as discipline when you made a mistake?? Or if they asked to strip search you?? If you own a business, would you do this to one of your employees?? Has this sort of thing ever been acceptable in the workplace?? I understand the whole "spare the rod" stuff. But if it's not acceptable to treat adults this way, I'm not sure why it would be ok to treat children this way in school. Although our parents and grandparents might have been subjected to this sort of punishment, and turned out "ok", that doesn't make it the right way, or only way. Don't get me wrong, I do think we (as a society) are too soft on our kids, and spend too much time trying to please them. And I'm not proud to say I've resorted to spanking my kids....which I've done more out of frustration and the heat of the moment for myself. But as I've grown older, I take the time to think about more appropriate punishment, and it's never been spanking or humiliation. Since taking this route, I've had fewer discipline problems with my kids and they respect me more and have been more willing to do what I need them to do. In my opinion, there are just better ways to deal with these issues than rulers across the hand, or humiliating kids (or any person for that matter) to get your point across.

I have to admit, this makes me change my mind about my previous post.

Trust me, I'm not calling for the school "KGB" to haul off every kid to a darkened room for the slightest infraction, however kids these days have parents and teachers "over a barrel". I'm all for a little stern discipline when needed.

As far as Nell "sneaking a peak", these kids show off more skin at the local swim club than Nell probably saw.

Are we sure we know how much skin was seen? I guess this is an excuse? So if it was a male teacher with the same female students will it still be okay?

It would be a major criminal investigation and in the national media.

We all know there are plenty of double standards in life...

I really don't think kid's have parent's and teachers over a barrel. It's important to protect kids because most of the time they are not physically or mentally/emotionally mature enough to deal with overzealous adults. They deserve to be respected and treated fairly. It's pretty easy to spank or humiliate a child (even a teenager) and call it punishment because it's not realistic for a kid to be able to fight back without incurring greater wrath. It's similar to domestic violence against women. As a coach employed by a school district, I don't put myself in a situation where a kid has me over the barrel. If you treat kids with respect and be fair with and use appropriate punishments (none of which should ever be physically or verbally abusive) they will respect you back and you've got nothing to worry about. Sure there will be a few outliers that you can't get through to, but smacking them around or humiliating them certainly will not make things any better. If your idea of "stern discipline" is appropriate and constructive punishment, then I agree with you. If on the other hand, it's the "ruler across the hand", I couldn't disagree more, and if that's your method, if you find yourself "over the barrel", it's your fault.

I don't think anyone is questioning the coach's motive. I think poor judgment was used in how it was handled, and needs to be addressed, and it is.

I would not be surprised to see this as a "hypothetical" scenario provided in a future online Virtus training bulletin.
