You seem on the defense there playtowin, that wouldn't be because highlands is the only team to bring down a JV pitcher to get through the first round?

 

And your comment isn't on the defense. Ok. BTW I have been to 26 HHS JV games this year and I can only remember 2-3 times when Ethan Dody pitched. I don't know but if that "JV experience" gave HHS the advantage, then shame on the coaches for letting an 8th grader play up. Maybe he pitched more than that. IDK exactly, heck I'm all the way out in the "Garden" watching the games. Horst would know exactly if it makes you feel better. Does it really matter? Just sayin!

Isn't it a "Freshman " tournament? Freshman at the smaller schools play Varsity, JV consistantly because they have to. So dutch, using your argument, a smaller school Freshman playing JV due to #'s should not be allowed to play in their "CLASS" tourny. Being a Freshman (or lower) is the only qualification.....not "PLAYING" on the Freshman team.

 

Now....if we were talking about the JV tourny and teams brought down Varsity starters or those with significant time on the V field......I would agree.

Maybe I'm missing the real life importance/impact of winning a freshman baseball tournament. I'm kinda clueless that way. Then again, I am the parent of kids who have tossed out every "participation trophy" they have ever been handed. We still have three bedrooms full of martial art trophies, track medals, baseball and football trophies, etc...ones that mean something. I don't think winning with kids that haven't been on your team ALL SEASON LONG means something. But again, admittedly clueless.

 

My question is why isn't it practical? If the freshmen team survived/played all year without those kids, then why do you need them come tournament time?

So you are more concerned with winning a tournament in which the trophy is an engraved bat than you are about teaching kids lessons for life? What are you saying to the kids who have played all year? Sorry but we don't think you are good enough and despite your hustle and effort all year we are going to bring downs JV player to replace you....

....So just confirm your "ALL SEASON LONG" post. If at any time during the season a player is pulled up to the next level as part of his development, he should be required to stay up. The player should not be deemed eligible to play in the lower level/class tournament...regardless of the number of innings logged at that level. Did I get that right?

I agree with Oldtime. It is a "freshman" tourney. If Beechwood were to bring their studs to the tourney, what is the issue? They are after all freshman. I also agree about the practice of bringing varsity guys down to play in a JV tourney. I remember a couple of years ago when Dixie played Boone in the jv semis and a few (3?) of Boone's guys had different hats and a few of the less athletic looking kids in the dugout were missing jerseys, if you get my drift. Bush league!

How did it aid in his "development" if he didn't log enough innings??? Just an ego boost for Daddy?

 

But no, you didn't get it right....If a kid gets moved up, didn't really "make the JV/Varsity" at the beginning of the year, that's one thing but it's not the situation for most and certainly not what I was saying. If a kid was NEVER on the Freshman squad, played up ALL SEASON LONG then regardless of innings logged, he should not become part of the Freshmen roster just for the sake of winning a trophy.

So it sounds like there is no benefit in a player playing up unless he will see an undetermined number of innings and/or dad needs to compensate for weaknesses in other areas. :banana: I think that most would have to agree with you on the rest. If a kid shows up to the tournament and has to be introduced to the rest of the team.....It might just be for the sake of winning a trophy!

I'm not certain where you pulled that out of my posts. I was just really trying to give the reality of the situation. Especially at a school like Beechwood. I'm really torn on it at the Freshman Level, but ultimately I really do like the idea of playing with the team that has played most of the season. I guess my writing is poor enough that my opinion is not evident. I believe it tried to point out that I have seen little success by doing this, so I'm not certain why you think I believe winning a trophy is important. I certainly don't.

 

To be clear, if I had my preference, I would like both JV and Freshman teams to play with the team that played the season. Unfortunately these rosters are very Fluid, so there is no Set roster.

Quarterfinal games will be played Monday. The only info I have is that Conner will play at Dixie at 730.

 

Tuesday will be the semis and Wednesday will be the final.

So you are equating the frosh tourney to a participation trophy? If its that irrelevant, why play it? In my mind, any chance to win a championship, at any level, only breeds confidence and experience. If its not worth winning, why play it? Teams like BW, Brossert, and NCC face a dilema. Do they play kids up where they can help at a higher level, which due to sheer numbers means the play nearly all 7th and 8th graders at the frosh level, or do they keep them down. That certainly gives a distinct advantage to the bigger schools. If I'm Mullins at BW, I bring down a couple for each game just to get them innings on the hill. If they win, good. If not, they got work in.
