2013 Freshmen 9th Region Tournament

Featured Replies

several teams have freshman boys playing JV and they will NOT come down just for the freshman tourney. If they're good enough for JV, it does no good for overall development to bring them back down to win a freshman tournament. Let the boys who have been playing strictly freshman ball play to win the freshman tourney.

I agree. Dance with the one that brought you!

I do not mind teams bringing Freshman down since it is a Freshman tournament! They will all play each other as Seniors so I don't see why some consider it "unfair" or "unjust" just because some players are better than others. If you want to be the best, you must beat the best.

Two problems I have with it. First, the kids who "lose" their spot due to the "new" freshman players. This is an end of season tournament, the kids who have worked their butts off for this team and school should be rewarded with playing in this tournament. Second, not all schools will allow it. Every school has several, 4-7 freshman players, that are "playing up". Not all, and in fact, most schools will not allow those players to come back and play in the freshman tourney. Beechwood, Ryle and Cooper I know have stud pitchers on the JV and V levels who would provide a tremendous boost to their tournament roster, but will not be allowed to play in the frosh tourney.

Conner is 13-4. Playing CovCath tonight and HolyCross on Monday.

And if you are considered to be the best, then don't step down off that level. By bringing down the studs, you're developing the other freshman boys to get to the level to create a talented team by the time they are all seniors. Play your talent up......It's common sense.

I would never count NCC's freshman out. In recent years they have been very successful come tournament time. Could someone please list the game times and locations for all games. I would like to make it out to catch a few games. This tournament is always a fun tournament to see. Good luck to all teams.

My personal thought on this one is the same as soccer....

I am ok bringiing any Freshman down....even if they are playing Varsity.....it is a class tourny (Freshman class)

Different feeling about the JV tourny.....if you are getting signficant V time, or have or are started (ing) then you shouldn't come down. It isn't a class tourny (FR, So, Ju, Se)

Could you imagine the pitching rotation Beechwood would have if they played all the Frosh down for the tourney.

Combs, Stringer,Slusher,Fieger,Bankamper,Rowe and Sherron. If this group stays healthy what a strong rotation Mullins will have their Senior year.

The ones that are known were listed in the original post.

As in any tournament, this will come down to match ups. In years past, some of the first and second round winners have been a surprise. However, once their stud has thrown to win game one, they're mediocre. To get to Saturday you need three good pitchers. If you're lucky enough to get to Saturday night, anything can happen.

.......if they stay healthy AND keep football away.

Keep football away? Why? If its for health reasons, yes. But those kids are all good football players, couple of them are better football players than baseball, and if forced to choose would opt out of baseball.

On topic, would love to hear who will bring frosh down. I agree it should not be done if it sits another frosh, but several teams are forced to play 7th and 8th graders due to limited numbers. I have no issue with doing that, all those kids will get their chance eventually to do the same thing.

Kind of what I meant......Fantastic starting rotation if they keep playing both. See a lot of kids chose one over another when they are good enough to play both.....

The opening round Scott v Beechwood game has been scheduled for May 8 at Pendrey Park (Field 1 or 3) at approximately 730.

The opening round Conner v Simon Kenton game will be played at St Henry at 715 on May 8.

Got it. Somehow I misinterpreted that, I see it now. You are correct, but I dont think any if them will give up baseball. That said, I certainly could see a scenario in which Stringer hangs up the football cleats, I'm kind of surprised he still plays. No way Combs gives football up. I dont know the other kids.
