One of the CBS reporters just stated that the course was inspected by police with police dogs, including bomb-sniffing dogs, and it was cleared ahead of time.

 

If thats the case, that will at least help narrow down the time frame of when the bomb was placed and thus by looking at the video (if there is some available) they might be able to narrow down some of the suspects...

They are also reporting that the bomb squad is going to take conduct a "controlled" explosion of some kind here soon. I wonder if its another device?

I have no sympathy for whomever did this. Put them in a garbage can with a similar device and a deadman's switch.

I have heard reports of way more than 12 dead, but hopefully they are just wrong. Hoping for the best, but not looking good.

Yeah, I guess the course could be cleared ahead of time...but, do they have checkpoints for the fans to go through? I'd imagine it'd be fairly easy to walk down the sidewalk, or come in one of the side/back entrances to some of the buildings, carrying nothing but a backpack. Set it down, pretend to take some pictures, and walk away. It could be set to go off within the next 30-60 seconds, allowing you enough time to get clear of the blast.

From the further reporting, it's sounding like the spectators along the course are not checked as they enter the course area, so that effectively leaves the course exposed.

No, spectators do not go through any type of a clearance. Now maybe it could be different for a finish line area where 1000s of people congregate, but logistically it would be impossible most of the time. I am not sure how you even contain it to control spectator access. I guess buildings would have to be blocked off a couple blocks back and screening points would take place a block or two away.

In one hour they are reporting that? And leaking it already?

Interesting point just made by one of the commentators...a terrorist would like the finish line not only for the close proximity to a large group of spectators...but, also a large quantity of media/cameras rolling that would capture (and thus, promote) the carnage.

They've now upped the injury count to 23, and the number dead reported to still be at 2.
