Derby State Thoroughbreds 14u team lost this morning in the final 8 of the Pitt Jam Fest to the eventual champion, D.C. Assault who is ranked #10 in the country by 5 star. The Thoroughbreds are #24 according to dunkdog, Thoroughbreds lost 66-65, had the ball in the final seconds but was unable to get the win. Great game by both teams.

Seems risky. I can't say I have seen many kids clamoring to wear Under Armor shoes. Who is the NBA pitch guy for Under Armor? Luckily the success of Louisville Magic draws in top talent since their equipment won't.

Side note/question:

Is this how AAU guys make their money? Convince a shoe company to fund them?

Under Armour has been growing fairly rapidly.

For some insight into their growth and strategy, this 2008 Time magazine article is a decent read:

Under Armour's Big Step Up - TIME

They haven't really tapped into the NBA greatly as of yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see an expansion soon. They are definitely an emerging brand in other markets though, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them add more clients in the NBA soon given the amount of branding and marketing they've been doing lately. One noteworthy foray in the basketball world is their taking over the 'Boost Mobile Elite 24' and branding it as the 'Under Armour Elite 24' (2012 was the first year that I found where the sponsorship title had changed).

On the AAU scene, the DC Assault (former AAU team of Kevin Durant and many others) is now sponsored by them.

Here's a Rivals' article with some info on some of the top Under Armour squads competing at the Pitt Jam Fest (mention of PRP's D'angelo Hunter in the article as well):

NKY Jazz U17 consists of

Burns, Shannon, Jennings, Trentman, Rieger all from Brossart.

Noble, Rechtin- St. Henry

Holbrook-Campbell county

Pangallo-Ncc (soph playing up).

The won their second straight tourney this weekend winning the Super Regional in Cincinnati. They qualified for the D1 Nationals.

Travelers will be at Boo Williams this week end at both the 16 and 17U age group.

I'll be making the trip and will have updates of both throughout the weekend.

Travelers went 2-2 in Los Angeles.

Bolden had 8 pts 7 boards 5 assists today.

Beverly (frosh) had 7.

This might be the best freshman in the state. Might not have the size or athletic ability of some of the others (Dow, Goodin, Williams), but this kid is playing up 2 age levels and more than holding his own.

Bolden has been playing off the ball more with Beverly running the point and Travelers have had success with that lineup.

Size will always be his issue. He's very solid with the ball, great distributor. But Dow is the best frosh I've seen in this state. He's a monster.

I have to agree here. I love Beverly and Dow but I'd give the edge to Dow.

Quentin Goodin in my opinion is the best freshman in the state.

ALL mentioned are and will be very good players. But it begs the question of how we are defining "best?" Are we talking who would you want on your team today or perhaps who had the best year? OR who will likely be "best" at the next level/who has the most upside? For instance, if you watched the Richie Farmer-Allan Houston showdown back in the day, perhaps even looked at their seasons, you could have argued Farmer was the better of the two. However, I don't think anyone would've questioned who would be better at the next level. This was due to his (Houston's) advantages in size/length,athleticism and overall skill (I.e. ballhandling). One could argue that there are perhaps "better" freshmen in the state than Goodin, but not if you are talking about potential to play at the next level. IMO he's clearly the best by that measurement. Often, when talking about middle schoolers through Soph, the "best" kids matured early, in terms of both height and strength. If they are mostly "done" maturing, can they play their respective position at the D1 level, D2 level, etc? Right or wrong, that's how I look at potential/whose best. And Goodin, even if he's done maturing, already has the size and athleticism (and a nice skill set too) to play at a D1 level given the position he plays.

Two big tournaments this weekend with the Adidas Tourny in Indy and the King James in Akron. I believe the NKY Bulldogs are going to Indy. Anybody else going to either tourney?

Here is video from EYBL Los Angeles.
