Why do we need 3 officials at high school basketball games?

Featured Replies

It has been my experience that 3 man crews actually blow the whistle less. Officiating has evolved with society. Things we see on tv now would have made us blush 20 years ago but instead we have become desensitized to all the violence, sex, and drugs. It seems "not that bad now" and "turn the channel if you don't like it". By the same token, we watch an NBA game and think that holding, pushing, taunting, self-promoting, arguing with officials is just a part of the game and you need to accept it. I think we should give the power back to the officials and clean up the "Greatest Show On Earth". Kentucky high school basketball. When you start calling fouls for "holding" the coaches and players will soon figure out...you can't do it anymore. It's painful to watch some games when the refs are "letting them play". In football, does letting them play mean that you don't enforce the rules? (clip, unnecessary roughness, off sides, face mask) In baseball, a guy doesn't slide into a base and clobbers a fielder...just letting them play? OK guys, the double play exchange is bending the rules. I'm not blasting the referees, they are officiating the way they are instructed at rules clinics. Letting them play should not mean, not blowing the whistles! :irked:

Great post.

With as weak as the officiating has been in the 15th for the past two years, they could use 5 officials on the floor!

Milburn, I couldn't have said it better myself. You are exactly right, 15th Ragion officiating is miserable.

I'm not sure what the standards or qualifications are for being an official but some of these guys are absolutely horrible. i've seen at least 5 games this year decided by the officials. I"ve seen officials take points off a game score board 2 plays after the 3 was shot and i've seen officials just totally blow a coach off with 10secs on the clock trying to call a timeout.

After watching the Girl's & Boy's All A tournaments these past two weeks, I can say I'm sick of games with three officials. Why do we need three? It's another set of eyes to call more fouls and other infractions that otherwise wouldn't be called. The game becomes all about the officials instead of the players. Keep two officials & let the kids play!

Why did we ever start having three anyway?

Why? Because if there were not 6 eyes, people would be on here complaining about all of the OBVIOUS calls that were missed.

My problem is that it's not consistenly used, you have dominant refs, refs that aren't used to a 3 man rotation on a regular basis, the wrong ref making the call, either use 3 or use 2, don't mix and match.

I agree :D

The KHSAA mandated three officials for postseason games after the Scott County-Paducah Tilghman debacle in the 1999 Sweet 16. Many basketball people I know feel the game is no better officiated with three than it is with two.

3 officials see the baseline, off the ball and perimeter hand checks much easier....if they are calling more fouls, than it's perhaps because the players are causing them.

I like the 3 official concept very much.

Exactly!!! :thumb:

I don't have a child on any team, and while my heart may be with one team, I travel around the mountains watching as many games as I can between all the teams just because I love basketball. I've done this for years. Noone can tell me that the officials do not affect the outcome of the games a lot of the time. I think instead of worry about butting more and more officials on the floor, the KHSAA needs to build an accountability factor for the existing officials. At every game I go to, there are numerous fans, televisions stations, etc. sitting around the gym with cameras. We may not be able to stop the game for an instant replay, but the KHSAA could review these tapes to determine if those "loud mouth fans" just might have a reason to be blowing off steam. Like I've said, I've watched a lot of basketball over the years, and I've seen the battle lines form. With quite a bit of accuracy, I could walk into most of the gyms in the mountains, look at the ref, and tell the KHSAA whether or not they should review the tapes before the first ball is thrown into the air. There are certain refs who will favor certain teams regardless of who they play, and there are other refs who will go against certain teams regardless of who they play. Not to say that all the refs fall into this category. In fact four of the last five games I have watched the officiating has been alright. But, even the one game out of five should not be tolerated. These kids work hard, and to have a game taken by the very officials who are supposed to be making sure they get a fair shot is just not acceptable.

Here's the problem. Most schools don't employ 3 officials during regular season games. So, when these officials do tournament games that have 3 officials they aren't used to it. They also think that now that they have 3 officials, they should be able to see the entire floor and have to call everything. (As most probably think that way) The only couple of games I've witnessed this year that had a three man crew called a TON of fouls. I'd rather you let them play a bit. Plus, it's a lot more difficult to yell at three officials rather than two. :fire:

I think it is ridiculous...... most games you have 1 blowhard and 1 guy who has a date and needs to get out of there so he never blows the whistle. Why have another one?

I'll have as many officials as needed, as long as they make good calls!

My problem is that it's not consistenly used, you have dominant refs, refs that aren't used to a 3 man rotation on a regular basis, the wrong ref making the call, either use 3 or use 2, don't mix and match.

Exactly... I don't care if it's two or three refs, but a referee needs to either be a 2 ref official or 3 ref official because guys that get used to calling 3 man games are good in those three man games but not as good when they have to do 2 man only games and vice versa...
