Why do we need 3 officials at high school basketball games?

I guess I could accept the three official concept better if it were used for EVERY game. The players would be used to it and wouldn't commit the fouls that are caught by the extra set of eyes. The problem is using two officials at some games and three at others. The KHSAA needs to be consistent, either two or three for every game, not just certain ones.

The players would adapt to the three official game and it wouldn't be a free throw shooting contest.

I think three officials is a necessity in today's fast paced, bigger, stronger, more athletic players game than in past decades. I have watched 10th region games and 9th region games and I like the three officials of the 10th much better than the two of the 9th's games.

Both the boys and girls in the 9th had three this year.

I'll take a 3 man crew that will blow the whistle. The pace of the game, tight defenses, movement away from the ball, multiple screening, are all factors that we need to address. Can 2 guys effectively work a fast paced game? Probably not. Another concern is officials who work college games on one night and then work a high school game the next. The college games are 3 man with more contact on and off the ball which may be partly responsible for the trickle down effect of the physical play. Kinda like driving 70 on the interstate and exiting to a smaller road...it feels as if you are just creeping down the road and you begin to speed. It takes some time to adjust your driving, much like the ref who works a college game on Monday and a high school game on Tuesday.

Instead of whining and complaining, why don't you all get out there and try it?

ALOT of teams paly dirty so that is why. I know a couple off the top of my head. They still get away with it alot.

When we lived in TN, all schools used 3 referees. You would have a few bad calls in a game, but we never complained about a referee controlling the game. Then we moved to KY and could not believe that the officiating in a "basketball" state was so terrible. The difference was the number of referees.

It is hard enough for a 3 man crew to get in the right positions in a fast-paced game, but put only two on the floor with a fast team and there are bound to be numerous bad calls. We went to an All A game this past week and the one referee was horrible. He was very inconsistent. And guess what, it was a two man crew.

I agree with the other posters that it needs to be consistent whether there is a 2 or 3 man crew at every game. I understand that a lot of schools are trying to save money with less officials, but we sacrifice quality by doing that. Let JV have two officials and mandate that Varsity contests have 3 officials. I think that it would help with the belief that a referee won or lost a game for a team.

does anybody else think that a 3 man crew generates a lot of late whistles? At the 8th region all a last week i bet there was at least 10 late whistles. I think the other officials are waiting to see if someone else has the call.

I have noticed this myself. I think it coems down to them not being accustomed to having three officials on the floor. They are out of position a lot of times, and are not sure whose call it is.

I agree too. I don't blame the officials though, they're not used to working with 3 all the time. I prefer 2, but I would have no problem with 3 officials if it was EVERY game!

The speed of a boys varsity game has gotten too fast for 2 man crews...The NBA & college went to 3 man for a reason...It's too fast and physical for 2...Why would high school be any different?? The only reason 3 man crews are not used all the time now is money...It's easy to sit in the stands & watch a game while sitting still with the whole court in your field of vision and wonder why you need 3 refs...You cannot judge the speed of the game until you are actually a part of it...You are asking, in many cases, 50-60 year old men to chase some of the most athletic kids in a school up and down the floor and get set up and be in position to make the right call everytime...It's not going to happen...3 man does increase the odds of calling the game better...If the refs in your area appear unsure in that system, it's probably because they are not able to practice it enough...

By the way, as others have already stated, there are studies that have shown that less fouls are actually called in 3 man...Maybe that's because there is less guessing because you are better positioned to see a smaller area of coverage...Also, maybe players try less illegal tactics because they feel they are more likely to get caught...

The game of basketball has changed and has passed up 2 man crews. A 3 man crew is needed becase of many reasons, quiker ball movement, more sophistocated plays...etc...

Oh, I know it's not an easy job. Nothing could make me ref. But no one is making them do it. If they are are going to choose to do the job, they should do it right. If the job is too hard, or not worth the money to them, they should step aside and let someone else have the whistle.

I attended the Paintsville/South Floyd finals Saturday night and as a fan of high school basketball I was upset by the way the officials called that game. I'm not taking sides, South Floyd won so they get to go to Richmond but there were some questionable calls in the final two to three minutes that cost Paintsville the game. The calls were calls that any official should be able to make, even in buddy ball. KICKING (has to be intentional, that official was sitting on South Floyds bench when he called that against Paintsville), 5 seconds (never mind that official can't count to five). Plus, you can only move on the baseline when throwing the ball in after a made basket right (the official was watching the cheerleaders on that). I feel for the officials, I know it is hard to call a game, but they are trained to call it correctly and fairly.

It hurts the kids the most when you don't call a fair game.

Oh yeah, I have to give some props to the fan that got tossed during the game. After watching the game he was probably doing the right thing.
