Why do we need 3 officials at high school basketball games?

Featured Replies

After watching the Girl's & Boy's All A tournaments these past two weeks, I can say I'm sick of games with three officials. Why do we need three? It's another set of eyes to call more fouls and other infractions that otherwise wouldn't be called. The game becomes all about the officials instead of the players. Keep two officials & let the kids play!

Why did we ever start having three anyway?

3 officials see the baseline, off the ball and perimeter hand checks much easier....if they are calling more fouls, than it's perhaps because the players are causing them.

I like the 3 official concept very much.

I also agree, I like the 3 officials.

Untill officiating can step up there might be a need to add officials.

3 officials are fine.....................as long as the whole tourney is three officials and they are used to working with each other as a three-man crew.

The worse thing is to have two officials all week long and then stick three in the finals. What the other games weren't important?

I tell anyone that will listen, Officiating is a thankless and never appreciated "job"

They always get blamed for bad calls costing a game and YES, they along with players, coaches and loud mouthed fans....will make mistakes.

3 officials can form the triangle of the view of the game, both to the ball and away from the ball, which will help the flow of the game better and possibly, just possibly sooth some irate fans, who blame the official for that late foul....even though their team shot 10-52 from the field.... :thumb:

As do I......

It seems that most like the instant replay in both the college and pro football games to make sure the correct call is made. In basketball, instant replay isn't feasible, but we can have another set of eyes.

You are also correct that the cause of more fouls being called is the players themselves as they are far too aggressive nowdays. I also think that another cause is today's players don't shoot very well. Today everybody tries to force the ball inside for bunnies. To few of todays players can drive the basket and stop to hit that ten foot jump shot instead they go all the way to the basket where they get fouled. Better shooting would cause less fouls.

With as weak as the officiating has been in the 15th for the past two years, they could use 5 officials on the floor!

...plus most all get behind the 3pt arc and let fly, at the earliest age possible and don't work on moving without the ball, screens, back-cuts, running the baseline....all which I might add, make you a better player and is seen more readily by 3 officials.

Officiating would be a horrible job and I would never even attempt it. The post I made earlier on this thread is the first time I have ever downgraded refs in my membership, so its not like I'm just your typical ref basher. And 80% of the refs I have ever seen are really good refs but boy the other 20% are really bad. It just seems like this year I have seen a poor sampling of refs. I do agree with you STRIKE3 one call cannot be blammed for a loss or a win.

Officiating is a thankless job....but....it has gotten pretty bad, especially in the 15th. I think the schools are going to have to agree to fork out more money so that we can attract the good officials again. The offiiating in the 15th has went down hill since we lost some of the better officials. Jerry Hurley, Dale Conn, Ancie Casey, Sherman Combs, Keith Hall, Brent Rose, just to name a few. All of those were honest, hard-working officials. Since those guys have quit it has slowly gotten worse. I say raise the $$$$ and get the good ones back. If you mix those guys in with some of these guys, then the whole region would be much better from top to bottom!!

I personally don't like the 3 man concept, I can see teh need on a college court since it's a bigger area but I think two can do a fine job.

I agree Neerfan, it has been my experience in the 8th and 9th regions, that a two man crew is better.

I have seen time and time again where one referee out of the three will make 60% of the calls.

There is always one dominate referee. I say go with three and save the money spent on the third referee, who isn't really required!! I think everyone has seen the dominating referee I am refering to on a three man crew, make calls he wasn't in position to see, where the third referee isn't blowing his whistle.
