I will answer my own question, because the cost outweighed the benefit.

 

In the past those two teams pretty much owned anything with a Bluegrass Label on it but recently not so with Trinity. Even if schools like Elder and Cincy X split with Trinity that is not good enough. In fact, schools like Elder and Cincy X need to win at least 4 out of 5 against anyone they schedule or they will not make the Ohio playoffs given the Harbin system.

 

I have said this a million times and I will probably say it a million more, when an Ohio team schedules a KY team it is because they are almost certain they are going to win the game.

 

All I can say to the Bomber and Panther fans is it was fun while it lasted...

I would agree. I believe OH's playoff system dictates who they should schedule.

I don't think that X was trying to "avoid" Trinity or guarantee a win. All truth be told they played them as tough as anyone this year except for Moeller and had the opportunities to win. Plus Trinity will be down this year.

 

More than anything I think it was a chance to X to play some new teams like Ben Davis and Brentwood Academy. If you take a look at the schedule X plays I don't think they need to prove anything to anyone.

I'm a cynic so there's no way anyone is going to convince me that had the results been reversed X and Elder wouldn't still be on Trinity's schedule. The same with Brentwood Academy and MBA.

 

That said I don't blame either X or Elder since their position in the Ohio playoffs is affected by the game with Trinity. And I can certainly understand the desire to see new faces on the schedule. It would be very nice if some "new faces" in this state would "grow a pair" and play.

If I was Elder and St. X I would be spending a lot of time in the 3 NKY counties begging any of the 6A schools for a game. High probability of a win and computer points and fans can make the trip easily. Those schools have a tough enough schedule that they do need to schedule some win games.

Big difference, what's it cost for X to travel to Colerain vs. Trinity? You can buy my cynicism or not as you see fit.

These games, win or lose, have no bearing on Trinity's ability to make the playoffs in Kentucky. Year in year out, Trinity would be lucky to make it out of the GCL unscathed. If the roles were reversed, Trinity would not be trying to schedule Elder or St. X. Also, Elder or X can find a school that is closer to play them, why would they choose to play a school 2 hours away?

I agree if the role was reversed Trinity would do the same thing. And I don't look at it as being "scared." I think Cincy X and Elder are making smart business decisions here.

 

On playing someone closer to home, I am not sold that is always the case and even if it is the case it normally isn't going to be a team that will give X or Elder 1st level points and between 7 and 9 wins.

I don't think St X has any worries about who they play but Elder has been sub-par recently by Elder standards. They have more worries about win numbers.

They are not scared. They are smart. Elder and St.X cannot get many local Ohio schools to play them for the same reason. Those schools cannot afford a loss to Elder or St.X the same way Elder and St.X cannot afford a loss to Trinity. And with the other teams on their schedules they need "win" games. Heck maybe backyard rival schools in Ohio do not play each other because they can't take a loss. It is terrible. It would be like Dayton not playing Bellevue because they need to find a team they can beat 60-70% of the time. It would be like no 6A and 5A schools playing Beechwood or NCC because they could not take the chance on losing. Ohio needs to award computer points for a quality loss. Back in the day (before computers) KY used to use a system that awarded like 50 points for a quality win. 40 points for a win, 20 for a quality loss, 0 for a bad loss. It was based off the other teams record.

I like some aspects of the Ohio computer system. With 6 classes the computer system could be great they just have to tweak it. I like that Moeller and St.X and LaSalle and Elder can all make the playoffs if they deserve to. Or if Colerain and both Lakotas deserve to make it. Don't want some district to get an automatic qualifier when the champ of that district could not come within 3 TDs of the teams above.

Kudos to Moeller for staying on Trinity's schedule. That was a heck of a game last year.
