Thanks, I know Code is or was a teacher a Highlands and I saw him holding a "Team Sports" class outside on the football field. They were playing Coed Flag Football game.

Code was referee, when a kid thought he was interfered with on a pass play the kid threw a tantrum and told him to "throw a flag". Code chewed the kid out and told him "don't you ever argue with an official, ever" and threw a 15 yd Unsportsmanlike flag on HER.:jump:

 

I think he was serious but Idk maybe just messing around...

Tim Sullivan. No affiliation at all, just gets a lot out of his players, and appears to be really sound defensively.

 

Also, someone mentioned Code because he gets a lot out of his players. I agree, another guy that does that year in and year out is Steiner. Pit bull.

Carr is really good, too. Mcqueary is good, but up to this year, he's had a lot of talent on his team the last 5 or 6 years. He did get the most out of that talent.

 

As the saying goes, you can't make chicken salad....

Code- will have his team ready to compete against any team no matter what the talent level is.

Faust- small school coach that will always give you fits.

Carr- not my style of coach, im not a fan of in your face screaming, but finds players that believe in him and gets them to play very hard for him.

Sullivan- makes smart decisions utilizing his players.

Lots of great coaches in NKY. I think everyone that has been named are all deserving of this title. I've not seen a lot of Booher or Ruthsatz, but Booher's reputation/past surely puts him near the top of the food chain. As far as Mike Code, I have tremendous respect for him as a coach. However, I really think he's a better coach when his brother, Scott, is on his staff. While he was gone to CC and TM, Brossart wasn't the Brossart they were while both wore green. Sure, there was a talent dip, but it's just how I felt. Tim Sullivan has done a masterful job at Cooper. Tenacious, hard-nosed, blue collar basketball has defined that program. Brad Carr, for what it's worth, will always be one of the best in the area for the simple fact that his teams play very hard, they guard very well, and they're always in it when it counts. Plus, it's fun to watch teams run and gun instead of walking the ball up the floor and getting into box sets. I'm also a really big fan of Dave Faust. Always a tough out and always prepared.

 

So, I basically agree with everyone. I do think Ken Chevalier gets left off of this list too often due to the type of talent he's had. I think everyone expects them to win, but it's not that easy.

Did you happen to look at the talent level of both in those years? Do you remember the upset Brossart had over CCHS in the Districts in the 08-09 season? After CCHS had won by around 20 in the regular season, Brossart upset them in the Districts.

 

Am not disagreeing with you completely. Both are fantastic coaches and the more good coaches you put on a staff, the better you will be. Just felt as if you were taking some of Mike's credibility away. Scott is great and I am sure will make a great varsity coach again someday.

Great lists of coaches. I want to put in another plug for Sullivan. Not only is he a great defensive coach, but he is one who gets the most out of his players. There are 2 players on this years squad he has truly molded into big important parts of this years team. 1 Drew Shelton who he has turned into one of the best big men in 9th district and another who not only didn't play much as an 8th grader and actually stopped playing and didn't play much at all until Sully got a hold of him last year is spencer Holland. Sully is a great coach who brings out the best in his players which I always thought was as big a part of coaching as the X's and O's.

Interesting conversation. I think it would be beneficial to establish criteria for how to evaluate all these coaches, so as to be able to compare apples to apples.

 

Categories could include tangible accomplishments like hIstorical performance; win/loss percentage, championships (districts, regionals, state, tournaments), as well as intangible things like teaching these kids to be men.

 

I don't know enough about most of these coaches to weigh in, but I do know a man who has been teaching great fundamental basketball for years in NKY and growing young kids to become real men and my vote goes to Fred Terry!

NKY has sent us at Seneca a good young coach and Eastern has Henley who won a state championship at Holmes. I don't know what's in the water up there but keep it up all coaches in NKY.
