Should be a great night of Basketball and will give you the fans of the NKy, an insight into the future of high school basketball in NKy! So come out and cheer on your favorite teams and players on to victory!

The Covington Catholic vs. Boone County game Monday evening should be a good one. The Rebels will looking for a big game from Nathan Schild and Jeff Purnell. The Colonels will need a big game from Heppler and Sweeney. Both teams are quick to basket. This game will come down to who wants it the most. The Colonels should not take this one for granted. The Rebels beat a very good Bulldogs team and a lackluster effort by the Colonels will put this one in the losing column. Flood and Lenhoff need to stimulate and run the offense with an eye toward dishing to Sweeney and Heppler. If Sweeney can slash and finish at the rim and Heppler can post and take the ball to his man, this should give the Colonels a decided advantage. Coupled with some quality post play by Young and Beck and the Colonels could run away.The Rebels certainly won't be giving any easy baskets, so all of the Colonels including those off the bench need to play hard.

They played each other in the HC Christmas tournament also. CCH won big.

1st quarter:

Neither team is shooting that well to open up this game but both seem to be working hard.

At the end of the 1st quarter it's Holmes 10 Boone Co 8

 

2nd quarter:

Still neither team shooting very well. Boone County playing at times an offense called "I get the rebound, I shoot the ball". Holmes on the other hand has had open shots but nothing is falling.

At the half it's Boone County 18 Holmes 16

 

3rd quarter:

U G L Y basketball for the 1st four minutes of the 3rd quarter and I mean UGLY! Missed free throws, 5 second violations, walking etc. If this were the first game of the season....

"T" called on Holmes #21 and for what ever he said or did, the stripe was extremely upset with the young man. You want to know why I said ugly? Boone County scored 5 points while Holmes scored 4 to give Boone County a 23 to 20 lead after three quarters.

 

4th quarter:

Holmes behind #24 Green, is putting this game away but for what ever reason they go away from him, then Boone is coming back. With 1:38 left in the game the game is tied and that's the way the 4th quarter ends with a 32-32 tie.

 

OT:

Say what you want about me calling this game ugly but again this was nothing but a ugly game and honestly I have no idea what happened to the Holmes team that I have seen play at least four times this year. With the game tied with just tenths of a seconds left, Holmes fouls Boone County and #3 Donovan goes to the line with two shots to win the game for Boone with 0.5 tenths of a second on the clock. The young man makes the 1st then misses the second on purpose and Holmes call a quick Time out but can't do anything with the 0.2 tenths of a second left.

BTW if you question me about my opinion of this game, ask the Boone County scorekeeper. I read her what I just posted and she agreed with me on my opinion!

This may be off topic, but it has come up during other BGP conversations so I'm going to revisit an idea -- if it belongs on a separate thread, I understand. So here goes: last year, some of us may remember James "Beetle" Bolden suddenly and unexpectedly getting shut down during a frosh tournament game in which he typically would have dominated. He had been playing and practicing the entire season with the freshman, JV, and varsity teams and there was some speculation that he finally hit the wall. This year, four of the five Holmes freshmen starters have been doing the same -- as has already been noted earlier on this or a related thread, the Holmes-CCH frosh game was rescheduled for 8:00 PM specifically because Arnold, Moore, Green, and Brolley were playing that night at 6:00 PM in a JV tournament game. If we assume that these kids also keep up with their studies, maybe they simply reached mental and physical overload.

 

I'm not a pediatrician or a psychologist, plus I do not know precisely which schools pursue which policy, but more than one BGP contributor has already questioned whether frosh who play up should, well, simply play up rather than also playing frosh ball all season. I don't have a solid opinion, but given the collective wisdom on this site I am eager to see if this merits discussion.

It isn't like Holmes was undefeated. In fact, Boone Co. beat them earlier in the season so Boone Co. beating Holmes should surprise no one.

I am not suggesting that Bolden's freshman experience somehow stunted his long-term development and I am not suggesting who should have won the Boone-Holmes game. A veteran BGP contributor expressed puzzlement over the difference in Holmes' level of play in this particular game after having seen them play differently earlier in the season. I thought his comment provided a chance to explore an important and interesting question, one that has already come up once or twice. I still think it's a good question; if I'm mistaken then hey, I'm okay with that.

I don't think any freshman who is starting JV/Varsity should play a second on the freshman team. How do you build chemistry when one or more of your players don't practice with you, or are missing your games bc they're at the JV game? It's not right to the kids who are left behind to practice and play everyday, but who take a seat when the JV kids are available.
