For every President that has been reelected I have always wondered why we have to do a huge production? I get having a formal swearing in a little get-together but the $170,000,000+ price tag seems excessive.

All should be done as Jefferson's first inauguration. He simply walked to the Capitol Building, gave his address, then walked home for dinner.

I'm not concerned about the pricetag, but I did chuckle when the President said something about reducing the deficit. :lol:

I got that from the link about this year's estimated costs. While not as elaborate as the first inauguration, the cost is supposed to be about the same.

Exactly. They are all ridiculous. It is comical to hear them talk about money issues and then use a silly amount of taxpayer money on a big party. We are not talking 4 or 5 million dollars here. Even worse on the second go-around.

This is completely unnecessary. Especially since he was actually sworn in on the Constitutionally-mandated day... yesterday. This was all for show. Unfortunately, it's a good political show for a president's supporters, so I don't see it stopping anytime soon.

You guys are all wrong. Ceremony and pagentry build a sense of enthusiasm, shared experience and contribute to national unity. Our peaceful transition of government for over 200 years is well worthy of celebration. While typing, I watched the President review the troops. Proud day all around.

I can see the spin now. A president decides to forego the pagentry, et al...and save the taxpayers some money. And then the other side will say he's taking money out of the pockets of "decent, working folks."
