Fairfax, Va. – The National Rifle Association of America is made up of over 4 million moms and dads, daughters and sons, who are involved in the national conversation about how to prevent a tragedy like Newtown from ever happening again. We attended today's White House meeting to discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.

 

We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment. While claiming that no policy proposals would be “prejudged,” this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners - honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans. It is unfortunate that this Administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. Instead, we will now take our commitment and meaningful contributions to members of congress of both parties who are interested in having an honest conversation about what works - and what does not.

Bye bye 2nd Amendment, next up 1st Amendment.

Thank you for being honest. The problem I have with the folks proposing legislation is that they don't know if what they propose will work either (actually, they probably have a good inclination that what they are proposing won't work, but in the knee jerk, emotional climate present after every tragic incident, they feel that they have to do something, even if it won't work).

No, I don't think it is. None of us know what the proposals will be, so at this point it is only speculation. I think that in writing the Heller decision Justice Scalia left little doubt that there is an individual right to bear arms, but that right, as with all others, is subject to reasonable government restrictions. I suspect that bans of some types of weapons, restrictions on magazine capacity and background checks on all sales would meet the test of reasonable restrictions under Heller. That does not speak to the wisdom of those controls. That is a different debate.

And what good will any of the restrictions do? How will they stop the next event? How do they address the actual problem?

Channel 27 news tonight said that Governor Beshear was asking Washington for funding for mental health and school resources (whatever those may be). Those, in combination with some reasonable restrictions on weapons and magazine size, tightening gun show and internet purchase/background check loopholes, database sharing and the like; and most importantly, figuring out some way to significantly decrease accessibility to deadly weapons by the mentally ill, should all be on the table.

 

No single one of these is guaranteed to prevent a Newtown-like tragedy; and all of them together won't, either. But we've got to try to reduce the odds. Throwing up our hands and saying that we simply have to accept our culture of violence and the concomitant consequences is unacceptable.

You do realize Justice Scalia said the M16(Full Auto version of AR-15) should be available to the "militia" which he defined as us, right? ANYTHING hand held should be ours. You people simply do not understand that.
