If this has already been addressed, my apologies.

When my dad was a police officer it seemed like he was always required to be certified. I remember him often having to go to the range.

For those that say teachers should be allowed to be armed do you advocate them going through the same shooting training as police officers?

I agree with Jumper_Dad that for those school personnel who desire to carry at work, they should be required to demonstrate their fitness to do so, at least annually. Anyone who wishes to be certified to carry a weapon in a school (where my children are present) should be subjected to more stringent requirements than that required of a general CCW permit holder.

I think annual qualifying/certification would be in order. Exactly what would need to be included in that is certainly up for further consideration, but off the top of my head, I think it should include a day of education on gun law updates, tactical training & range qualifying; all to be followed up with drug testing and a mental evaluation. At first blush that would be my minimum requirements to renew your School CCW certification.

I do not want my kids going to schools with armored guards. I think if this becomes the norm, then the end is truly near. Some questions that need to be answered before I make a call; A) How does Crazy obtain the guns? B) What kind of security does the school have? (Because these people do not stroll in unnoticed).
A) I don't know, how do criminals obtain guns illegally? B) I have no problem with making schools more secure, in fact I'd like to see it. I have my doubts, however, that would be enough to stop another incident. (Sometimes they shoot their way in, sometimes a security breech is their way in).

The fact that they're carrying in an environment with others children always present I feel their qualifications should be more stringent then the average guy/gal. I absolutely think those that would be carrying in school should be trained (more than just annually) and should have to undergo some sort of psychiatric evaluation at least annually. Police type training sounds reasonable to me.

I don't know that armored guards is the correct term as far as what is being proposed. I know several schools or school systems have school resource officers on campus each day during school hours. These are regular police officers from the street that are assigned to the schools, I think this is more along the lines of what is being proposed.

Channel 27 news tonight said that Governor Beshear was asking Washington for funding for mental health and school resources (whatever those may be). Those, in combination with some reasonable restrictions on weapons and magazine size, tightening gun show and internet purchase/background check loopholes, database sharing and the like; and most importantly, figuring out some way to significantly decrease accessibility to deadly weapons by the mentally ill, should all be on the table. No single one of these is guaranteed to prevent a Newtown-like tragedy; and all of them together won't, either. But we've got to try to reduce the odds. Throwing up our hands and saying that we simply have to accept our culture of violence and the concomitant consequences is unacceptable.

Reasonable is the problem, there's not much middle ground there.

I would certainly hope so, that sounds like an in-service day that I could enjoy.

You have air Marshalls on planes. Why not school Marshalls? What is the difference?
