January 6, 201313 yr Andy Dalton has proved once again what I've been saying on here for awhile. He is bad, plain and simple. His downfield throws are the worst I've seen in a long long time, maybe ever. -6 yards passing in the first half of anygame let alone a playoff game is pathetic. He can't hit the broad side of a barn. I don't care if he is only in his 2nd year or his 10th year, he is just plain bad. People will keep saying that there isn't anyone who would be available that is better than Adny but i disagree. Please give me a list of QB's in the league that would miss a wide open AJ Green for a TD at the end of the game like Dalton did yesterday. If it was just that one time I would say that's ok, it happend. But with Dalton it is game in and game out he misses that exact same throw. That particular throw is one of the easiest to make for a QB too, there is no excuse for constinately missing deep throws like that. Andy Dalton is bad period, end of discussion. What would you do at QB if you ran the Bengals?
January 6, 201313 yr What would you do at QB if you ran the Bengals? 1. I would have a QB competition with whoever I brought in instead of naming a rookie QB the starter even before he stepped foot on the practice field for the first time ever as a pro like they did with Dalton last year right after he was drafted. Automatically naming a rookie the starter and having no fear for him ever being replaced until maybe when his contract runs out is a joke. Maybe I just know more than the Bengals coaching because I spotted his shortcominggs long ago and apparently the coaches on that staff including the HC stilll don't see the problems. To answer your question though, i would replace Andy Dalton. All you need to know about Dalton is this. In his last 10 games in the regular season (not even counting his dismal playoff game) he has not thrown for 300 yards. On a team that hasn't had a running game, to not throw for 300 yards in an offense where they tthrow a lot is horrible. I believe in 16 games this year he only had 3 games with over 300 yards passing. In today's NFL that is not good unless you have a running game. Edited January 6, 201313 yr by Hellbird
January 6, 201313 yr Dalton was not good but what has happened to the offensive line? Dalton was hurried and on the move A LOT

As to installing a rookie QB as starter, that is the way it is done today in the NFL. I am not saying right or wrong, but that isn't a Bengals thing. As to replacing Dalton, please give me 2 or 3 QB's you could get to replace Dalton. The best option that comes to mind is Alex Smith. Would you trade a couple draft picks to get Smith? Who else and how do you get them here?
January 6, 201313 yr Author Dalton should have been the starter last year and he wasn't or isn't terrible. He just misses most throws downfield b/c his arm isn't strong. I've said it all along. Most people argued well he made that one good throw here or there. Doesn't matter. He can't make the downfield throws that are necessary to win right now. Maybe that develops maybe it doesn't. With his arm my guess is it doesn't. As far as what I would do I'd offer Dalton for Romo then draft a QB in the first round of this year or next years draft. I get that Romo isn't the answer but he's better for the next two years than Dalton will be and you have to hope to get lucky in the draft with someone with a big enough arm to carry you.

He may be the answer somewhere with a great coach and a great D but not here.

Who else and how do you get them here? There are only 2 QB's...no i take that backj, 1 QB i wouldn't trade for Dalton straight up and that is Tebow. I was going to say Sanchez and Tebow, but even as bad as Sanchez is, he can still hit wide open receivers down field the more times than not. Now here is what I think the problem is with the majority of Bengals fans when it comes to Dalton...same problem that comes up every single year after a Bengals draft. The majority of Bengals fans dillusionaly believe the bengals made great draft picks and havd the best draft in the league and they got a ton of steals and no matter who it is they draft many think they are the best period. I will give you a short list over the time since Marvin has been HC on players that we drafted that fans thought were the best and we got as steals. Stacy Andrews, Rey Maluagua, Andre Smith, Andy Dalton, I could go on, but no matter who I list that there are many bengals fans that for some reason think they are much better than they truly are. We needed a QB in the worst way last year knowing our starter refused to play for us anymore and what did we do? We didn't go out and get a starter in Free Agency, we also didn't go after one of the top picks in the draft, instead we went out and got a QB who was our #1 priority after every team in the NFL passed on him and got him in the 2nd round. We also didn't even attempt to go after a proven Hall of Famer when he was available this ppast off season, not saying he would of came here because he is smart enough to know this franchise is a joke, but at least try show some interest in Peyton Manning. Instead what prior starting QB did the Bengals show interest for this decade? A guy who came out oof prison and was the most overrated QB in NFL history, Mike vick. That shows the lack oof intelligence this franchise has had over the past 20 years. So you ask me who I would get as QB? A lot of people, I would at least go out and look for someone instead of staying pat with a guy who can't get the job done and once again sit around while the good players we have get older and will be done playing the game before we get a QB that can actually give this team a chance. You do know Andrew Luck and RG3 were drafted this year right? You also do know that Cincy had 2 1st round picks and more extra picks last draft......also 2 2nd round picks this upcomming draft. TRADE DRAFT PICKS TO INDY WHO WAS IN A MAJOR REBUILDING STAGE ALONG WITH DALTON TO THEM. Right there is another solution to our QB situation. Edited January 6, 201313 yr by Hellbird
January 6, 201313 yr I am watching Andrew Luck. Terrible throw on a quick out. Overthrows a long ball similar to what Dalton did with Green. Underthrows another 30 yard pass. Had another long throw that was bad. Another long throw lands 5 yards out of bounds. If Dalton was making those throws, the haters would be screaming bloody murder. I am not saying Dalton is great and I am overjoyed. He needs to get better. But I think everyone is being over critical of him. Most NFL QB's miss as many of the long throws as they complete.
January 6, 201313 yr Great points VOR. I thought the same thing about Luck. Plus his hand was not as strong as Andy's lol!! Tebow would have hit AJ at crunch time on both bombs based on what he did at crunch time at Denver last year.

So let me get this straight. You would rather have Dalton than Andrew Luck? How many passing yards does Luck have this 1st half so far? I don't know the answer, but I bet it's more than -6 hmmm, interesting.

And Luck's QB rating was not good this year (just a little better than Sanchez), but I would absolutely rather have Luck. Dalton is not the worst QB in the NFL. He is middle of the pack and he is just two years in. With all the other needs on the Bengals, I stick with Dalton and try to get an offense around him that gives him a better chance to be more successful.

With all the other needs on the Bengals, I stick with Dalton and try to get an offense around him that gives him a better chance to be more successful. Here is my problem with Dalton. I would give any QB a chance as long as he showed promise. I said from day 1 last year that Dalton's problem was simply accuracy downfield. A lot of QB's can struggle with that, but a lot also improve on it once they get used to the speed of the game and their recievers etc. Andy Dalton has not shown any signs of improving on that from pre-season his rookie year to today after 34 NFL starts. That is why I don't think he is as good as some say he is. Sure he can build his compl % up when he is only completing 5 yard passesd...it's the throws over 20 yards that he truly struggles with and you can not be a good QB in today's NFL without being able to complete passes down field. Why do you think Sanchez has always struggled? Same reason brady Quinn will always stink and the same reason Dalton will always stink, they can't complete wide open passes down field. Dalton has not improved at all with that pass from day 1 when he got here and unless he can learn to lead a reciever or hit a wide open receiver downfield then he will always be a failure and this team will always do nothing. All you have to do is look at Dalton's last 2 throws of the game yesterday. 1st one overthrows a wide openn AJ Green in the endzone...absolutely horrible pass, all he had to do is give AJ a chance to make a play on the ball...throw it more on a line if he had to,, AJ was open by 5 yards. 2nd the last chance thee team had in the game, it was then or never, complete a 1st down to give the bengals a shot at scoring in a do or die game and what does he do on 4th and 11? he throws a 5 yard pass for their playoff lives and the season resting on that very play. That about sums up Andy Dalton in a nutshell. Bad ddecisions and bad touch on the ball. Now I will get to your point about if Dalton made the saame mistakes Luck has made today that people would be after Daltonb's head. Well the big difference is Luck has shown time and time again this year he can actually make those throws more timmes than not.....something Dalton has never shown. That is the difference.
January 6, 201313 yr Luck 5-13 for 31 yards. Bottom line for me - the Bengals need at least two more good offensive linemen, a running back and another receiver before I am ready to get rid of Dalton.
