Lessons Learned from past School Shooting Saved Lives.

 

In years past when ever the police answered a call of an active shooter in any location like a school the procedure called for them to secure the perimeter and attempt to make contact with shooter while waiting for SWAT or backup to arrive. Thanks to lessons learned Police now enter the location and actively search for the shooter. That is what happened in this case. When officers arrived at the school the shooter (who I refuse to name) was looking for more victims and trying to get into another classroom. When confronted with approaching police officers this coward of a person retreated and killed himself. Had the officer followed the procedures that were still being taught just 10-15 years ago, many many more lives would have been lost. While this is a tragedy of unimagined proportions, it could have been even worse. Bless those teachers that saved lives by reacting to secure their children and bless the families of the families of the teachers that bought time and saved lives by giving theirs.

What I can't believe in this whole nightmare is the media. First, they got fact after fact COMPLETELY wrong....including the shooter's name, the presence of a second "suspect" and where the mother worked. Used to be you verified information before you aired it. Now, it's just who can get it out there first. More recently, I am appalled at the shows like Katie and Dr. Phil who just "had to" come to Newtown to tell the stories. Exploiting those poor kids and the teachers for their own ratings...it is shameful. One chick on CNN said "they want us to leave" but I don't see anyone pulling out of there.

Problem is, people will watch those shows. I find it hard to watch more than a few minutes of news reports on this at a time.

My wife is a social worker with the state and the $50,000 is pretty close even considering benefits.

Yup and the fact is mace doesn't work on everyone. I think the best solution is to secure the schools with better doors and locking systems. Bullet proof glass where needed and if someone needs to be armed then you hire a professional. As far as where the money would come from look at Henderson as an example. There are 10 public schools, 7 elementary, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school. If you hired one person for each at $50,000/yr that's $500,000. There are about 40,000 people in Henderson County. That's $1.04/month per person in additional school tax.

 

In Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties in Florida, aka the Tampa Bay Area, all public schools, with the exception of small charters, have at least 1 armed "Resource Officer" supplied by the city police or county sheriff's department. Many high schools have as many 4 or more ROs on campus everyday.

 

I know Tampa Catholic and Tampa Jesuit employ armed security. Not sure about other private schools.

I know the high school in Henderson has a resource officer and I think the middle schools do too but not positive on that.

Targets will just wait to be shot and won't rush you...criminals will rush you

Targets will never have a buddy attack you while you are reloading from shooting the first target...criminals won't wait

Targets are "dead or stopped" with one shot...criminals? not always

 

plus when you are shooting targets you control the conditions...criminals by nature try to use surprise

nerves and adrenaline don't really come into play shooting a target at the range at noon on a Friday...but at 2am on a Monday night nerves and adrenaline will over whelm you making at least your first few shots less than perfect against a moving and defensive criminal.

 

I can make any normal pistol or rifle shot at the range on the first shot any time...I would not want to risk my families safety to only having 5 shots against unknown number of criminals.

Brother-in-law is a school counselor and brings the dog to school everyday. His students were so excited to see "their" Prince on TV, and happy that to help the Sandy Hook kids.

A hockey team put the names of a deceased Sandy Hook victim on their jersey.
