I have reluctance on arming teachers. The first thought that comes to mind, the psycho student now has guns he can access within the school. He takes a knife to school and gets the teacher to unlock the drawer where the gun is or just kills her and gets the key. Or maybe he sneaks in one gun and gets access to more guns by killing the teacher who has a weapon.

 

What about having tasers in schools? Is that a possibility that would help?

Kind of depressing to think about but why not modify the schools to something like a prison ?

I am in the same boat as you. Whether you are pro-gun or anti-gun, arming some teachers promotes a "gun culture", something I am not in favor of. I do not think it would make me uneasy knowing select teachers are packing, but something about it just does not seem right. Teachers are there to teach, having them properly trained in combat tactics seems extreme. Though the flip side is we are in extreme times so you could argue it is warranted. I like the taser idea better.

On her talk show yesterday Mandy Connell said arm teachers with bear mace. It can spray 50 feet and as she said, if her child got some on her by mistake while stopping a shooter the kid would be terribly uncomfortable but alive. She could live with that.

Are there easy remedies such as goggles or masks these idiots could use?

Coming up with the money would be a very lengthy task and create its own issues, but I do believe that an armed officer should be at minimum on all school campuses. However there is a very simple thing that could be done that may help to deter this type of events. I know a school that was having some issues with vandalism after normal school hours, so the local police started having their officers park their cruisers in different parts of the campus after their shift and leave them their overnight, magically all vandalism stopped.

 

Not saying that would 100% stop these type of acts, however, it may deter them from even coming on campus if they know their could be an officer on site.

Bullet proof glass where needed and if someone needs to be armed then you hire a professional. As far as where the money would come from look at Henderson as an example. There are 10 public schools, 7 elementary, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school. If you hired one person for each at $50,000/yr that's $500,000. There are about 40,000 people in Henderson County. That's $1.04/month per person in additional school tax.

$50,000 a year? You could probably find a retired police officer who would do it for much less.

The fact that teachers MAY be armed could be enough of a deterrent for future attacks. At the very least it may help to minimize the attacks. Then again, most end up killing themselves anyway so they may just look to kill as many as possible.

I know a lot of Pike County schools were on lockdown yesterday as well.
