It's amazing to me how many on here think the answer is as simple as having armed people in the schools.

 

Where will the school systems get this newfound money for paying this enforcement? If you are thinking the teachers need to be trained, where will this money come from for the training and/or arming them? What about the teachers who would refuse to have anything to do with guns?

 

The local schools already have enough struggles keeping class room sizes small, hiring enough educators, paying educators and now you want to add another amount to that growing number?

 

So your proposing what then? That we just do nothing? Because that's all I'm seeing in your post, nothing.

I agree that no gun control law would have prevented this crime. However, I think a magazine clip max of 5 would have saved lives. First of all, he blasted out a window to get in the building. He probably would have used all 5 bullets and had to reload. Every time he went to an area and began shooting, he gets five shots off and then has to reload. That time, as short as it may be while he reloads, is an opportunity for someone to jump him. Reports say the principal and perhaps the counselor in the front office tried to jump him. If he only had five shots, between blasting open the window to get in and then going to the office there may have been a chance of stopping him right there. All speculation on my part but worth looking into.

Where is the money? Do you think it just magically appears because we need it? Good luck with that.

 

Just because you think you have an answer doesn't mean anything if you don't practice due diligence and the hard work of the logistics of paying for it and who do you authorize with weapons in a school.

To be honest simplistic thoughts like "hire a veteran," have problems beyond money. Ever heard of Post Traumatic Stress? Most of the vets I know are wonderful people, then there is my brother-in-law who is a veteran of the Navy from the early 90's and is a complete moron that I wouldn't trust with fly swatter, let alone a gun.

 

Hiring trained law enforcement would be great. But let's say you pay them simply $25,000 a year and you have 20 schools. Do the math. That's a hefty sum every year when actual education programs and support programs like DARE are cut out of schools.

 

We need to act, but not over react.

I would say some do. But many in elementary education I know do not.

Yes but by limiting or restricting one then you're doing it to both. You of all people should understand that seeing as how you just said you didn't want to rush to a conclusion or solution without looking at the logistics of it all and how it effects EVERYONE.

I think the cheapest and BEST answer is to allow teachers who've taken aCCDW course and passed be allowed to carry a sidearm in a double or triple retention holster similar to what law enforcement use.

Pay them 30k a new teacher salary, pass a levy, raise a tax. The people of Newtown would probably agree money wouldn't stop safety. Adding one teacher per school basically.

A gun to fun face off is a lot different than a Hollywood scene. The tension, blood pressure raise and tunnel vision effect could make you buckle or miss a wall. Let a trained pro do it.

No doubt. I'd certainly be willing to undertake a lengthy training course, undergo mental health testing as often as needed. I wouldn't want just anyone to be able to carry in a school. I'd want in depth education and true and continued mental health evaluations. Sometimes, I think that this is a crazy solution and sometimes I feel that it is the most sane. Right now it feels pretty sane.

I read, and I wish I would have gotten a link, that the evil person destroyed his hard drive prior to the attacks so little or no useful information may be gleaned from it. The more I hear about this monster the less I believe that he was mentally ill and the more I believe he was just evil. He planned methodically and when it became apparent he was going to be caught he killed himself. I hope he's nice and warm where he's at and that Adolf, Josef, Osama, Saddam and all the others are making him feel right at home.
