I wasn't sure if you could do it or not.. Either way. I agree with the onside kick strategy on almost all of them. The only one I didn't like was the one when Conner kicked off following a few penalties from their own 20 yard line

When are you talking about punting? You can't punt on a kickoff. You can on a free kick after a safety but not on a kickoff

I didn't watch the game so what I know is just from reading stuff here. I don't think the onside kick is what did them in. The mistake in the return game where FC recovered is what hurt. From the sounds of it that was a key part of when FC went on a run.

If you think your coverage team will struggle, you still don't need to onside kick every time. there are many other options such as squib kick, short kick etc. It sounded like going into the game the coach didn't trust his defense at all and wanted to get the ball back as many times as possible. So instead of allowing FC to have long sustained drives that ate the clock, he wanted his defense off the field.

 

Just doesn't make sense to me at all. Trying an onside a couple of times is one thing, but 10 times? Really?

 

Before you talk about it being a bad strategy you might want to see how Cooper does with it if they do allow their back line to catch some of the kicks. From what I have read about Timmons and company and the highlights I have seen. It doesn't matter if you squib kick it, if that squib kick happens to bounce to the back line and they get their hands on it, they usually take it back for a touchdown still or at worst back to midfield. Which is where they get it on an onside kick anyways. Then if you talk about sky kicking it to where the 2nd line has to fair catch it, that is only adding ten more yards than what an onside kick would do. With as good of a defense has Cooper has it might not be that bad of an idea to do the same approach. The last thing you want to do with as defense as good as Coopers is to allow your special teams to give up scores and not make them have to score on their defense.

Certainly very questionable strategy. Conner "pooched" kicked the ball several times against Cooper when they played earlier this season and I thought it was strange at that time. 10 onside kicks seems a bit ridiculous to me. That is just giving the other team too good of field position in my opinion.

I hope and pray that Cooper kicks it deep! Pretty please!!!!!

I really hate when coaches decide they are going to be the heros by creating a new strategy or shorten the bench too much in playoffs.

 

If they were doing this all season long then it was just what they did. If this was some special strategy for just this game - shame on the coaching staff. Dance with who brung you. Don't try to change who or what your team is for one game.

The strategy can be debated but it was really the execution that killed them.

 

Some kicks when OOB. A few never made it 10 yards. At least 2 were touched early by Conner. Some were kicked so fast and direct that Conner never had a chance to recover.

 

FC's kicker was really good at getting the bounce needed to have a chance.

Prior to the game against Conner, FC has a return for a TD at least ONCE a game, with the exception of the Woodford County game.

 

If you pooch it, you are pooching it to Woodside, Barnett, Hurst or Maupin and they all have taken it to house.

Should the question be about Conners defense? Its bad every season. I should have kept a chart when listening to the online broadcast Friday night of how many plays each drive was. Maybe it didn't matter where Conner kicked the ball to. Conner D seemed to not be able to stop them all night.

 

How many games did Conner lose this year where they gave up 28 points or more?
