Did Conner's Strategy Cost Them The Game?

Featured Replies

Clyde is right on. On side kicking is a strategy to gain an advantage, not to be used regularly. If that's the case, why doesn't everyone on side kick to let's say........Oregon? Same type of offense and I know it's a different level but my point is, KO squads should be your best open field tacklers. Not a place to put a younger player just to earn a Varsity letter. Unless he is one of your better tacklers.

Onside kicks isn't a bad strategy if you are constantly afraid of kick returns for a TD, BUT you need a defense to be able to get away with onside kicks the entire game. IF you don't have a defense that can make stops the majority of the time then it's a wasted strategy imo.

If that is the case, then I would of at least had a couple squib kicks or even short high kickoffs to give your coverage team time to get down field and make a tackle. Just my opinion.

Some teams do on side kick every time. Just like there are some teams that go for it on fourth down and go for two.

Comparing it to college is different for a number if reasons. One the rules are different for kickoffs. Colleges also have guys that can put the ball into the end zone. The quality of player on a college kickoff team is much different.

Regardless of whether you are pro/con on off-side kickoffs, the rule concerning the kicking team being off sides needs to change. Rather than an automatic dead ball and re-kick, let the play continue to completion. Then let them receiving team either accept/reject the penalty.

You really can't change that rule or you'd have to change the rule that says illegal procedure or offsides on offensive plays would be continued until after the play instead of a dead ball foul. If you changed it you could have all 10 players of the kicking team sprint downfield before the kicker kicks the ball and then not only would that be a problem but could cause uneccesary injuries.

It absolutely did. I'm aware of Timmons and other talent that FC has and it's good to respect talent, but you also have to take chances with it too. Recovering one onside kick out of ten costed them to say in the least.

With the exception of one player that is who was on the KO team Friday.

You got to be kidding me to think that would happen......my point is rather than a dead ball fall, it needs to be a live ball foul with options to the receiving team.......similar to college and pro rules.......works great there!!

This was only the second game all season that FC did not return at least one KO for a TD.

How many times out of the 10 was Conner supposed to kick it deep? How many times was Conner supposed to squib it? How many times were they supposed to onsides it?

Anderson County onside kicked everytime but one. Anderson squibs it with 14 seconds to go in the game, the second row kid fields it runs back and hands the ball to their returner and he scores the game winning TD. People were then asking why didn't the coach just onside kick it again.

Film of other times on pooch kicks the second row guys takes it to the house.

If Conner kicks it to one of their returners and they score a TD aand Conner goes on to lose by the same score the same people would be on here asking:

Why would you ever kick it to them?!?!?!?

If that was the top 10 open field tacklers, then let them tackle.

On side is a great weapon when the other team is not ready. Last year Conner on sided 7 times got 4, I believe. Do you think FC was not totally prepared for it this year? Then to on side from your own 20??

Hellbird is correct on how it could be used. Actually, D1 football tried this a few years ago and Wisconsin used it to end a half when they had to kickoff. They intentionally ran about 10 yards downfield before the kicker kicked it. Penn State kept making them re-kick. Wisconsin kept running offside intentionally running more seconds off of the clock. They finally got it down to where PSU only had the kickoff return because there was no time to run a play.

I have a question since I wasn't at the game and witnessed it in person. did Conner try diffeent types of onside kicks or did they try the same one all 10 times?

The reason I ask is because apparently they knew going into the game they were going to onside kick everytime. They had an entire week of practice. So if you go into a game knowing every time you kick off you are going to try an onside kick, then why don't you work on several different types? Use the ones that seem to be the most effective. Much better than kicking the same way every time. If thatg is what they did and only used the same type of onside kick then the coaches really need to take a lot of blame on that. If you go into a game knowing you are going to do the same thing over and over again, after the first 4 with no results why keep doing it? Try something else, kick up the middle, to the other side, high short kick, something but if you don't change after the 4th, 5th, 6th time and continue doing the same thing even on the 10th time, then that is just plain stupid if you ask me.

I only was able to listen to the game however considering Conner gave up 21 points off of turnovers, and still only lost by 3. I would say the strategy worked because if they protect the ball they win by 18. However turnovers happen sometimes to even the best of teams, and it got them that night its just one of those things that happen sometimes.

I guess Cooper answered this question for us tonight.
