Highlands 6th grade boys suffered their first loss tonight on the Ross at Woodland 33-26. The score was closer than the actual game itself. Highlands was missing a starter but the looked sluggish and struggled scoring.

8th grade game ended on a controversial time out call. It went back and forth the entire game. Murray (HHS) with ball driving in last seconds fouled unfortunate (no call) lost ball then a tie up one ref awards HHS possession by arrow the other said phantom time out Woodland. It truly was some home cooking. Just BAD! Traylor, Murray, Doty, Finfrock, and Johnston had nice games for the Birds! LaFrange saddled with fouls had an off night. The group is certainly playing better ball of late.

The time out was called, it wasn't a phantom time out. You could argue the timing of the TO. Refs pretty much let em play most of the night. Besides, no guarantee the outcome would have been different regardless of the call, as there was less than 4 seconds left when the time out was called.

That is a surprising outcome. IHM played with 4 players for almost the entire second half against Woodland before losing losing by one point at the buzzer. Having played both teams, I would have thought that Highlands would have won easily.

They laid a huge egg, were missing a starter in the paint and quite frankly a lot of kids played. Coach Herald does a fine job with the boys but it just wasn't their night. Woodland deserved the win.

 

However, I will say Woodland struggled with the press and had a lot of turnovers. I would love to see these two matchup down the road again in the tournament.

hoops, as you can see by comments in this thread about missed calls, phantom fouls, bogus calls and as you stated clapping when a 6th grader misses a free throw.....people are way over the top about about middle school basketball.

Middle school basketball in my opinion has the most poorly behaved parents/fans of all sports. You couldn't pay me to ref one of those games. In the 6 years my son and daughter played, I saw at least a few ejections of fans from games every year, and many warnings given. Coaches get a lot of flak to over playing time as many parents believe their 4'9" son who can only dribble with one hand is going to be the next point guard for UK. Coaches and refs at the middle school level are way underpaid for what they have to put up with. Aside from occasional 10 hour days on Saturday, I'm so glad my youngest son chose to wrestle.

Highlands scored 3 points in the first quarter and 1 in the third against Woodland..... agree with Q that the game was not as close as the final score.

Not sure about the 6th grade. I do know Woodland's 7th grade beat Holmes 42-25

Calpping is mild, I have heard parents whistling or creating loud noses during the free throw shot in an effort to distract the shooter. Why a parent would do that I do not know.

I was at the same game that hoop5 is talking about and that is exactly what happen. Parents from the other team trying to make loud strange noise to throw off the 6th grader trying to shoot foul shots. It is part of the game to be able to block that out but show some class.

Off nights happen in sports. Illness and injuries also happen. So far from what i have seen I would put Highlands and Holmes as the best 2 teams IHM's 6th grade has played. From what I know Gray will be very good also. I have a feeling that our schedule is going to be very tough from here on out.

Agreed, Gray has two very good players. The Birds also play a first round game in the Dayton tournament vs Walto Verona tomorrow. Its a tough week but that's why you play the games. Wins are great but getting better and having fun with your teammates is really what is most important at this level. I have been guilty of getting caught up in the winning and being frustrated with coaches and referees. However, when you think about the Connecticut tragedy it really puts things into perspective. Cheering on both teams to do well is the right thing to do. Making loud noises or yelling "Noonan" right before a 6th grader shoots a FT is ridiculous.
