A couple of weeks ago our JV team played at Berea. We came out of the halftime break with the inbounds. It was played straight to one of our players in our backcourt (he shall remain nameless!).

 

He could not believe how open he was as he turned and attacked OUR basket and proceeded with a lay-up!!. Fortunately (or unfortunately - depending upon how you view it) he missed the easy two and all was well again apart from a very red face once his mistake was pointed out to him by everyone in the gym.

Strangest basketball game I ever saw was Maryland vs. top-ranked South Carolina in early 1971 (I think SC was still in the ACC back then).

 

Halftime score was 4-3 Maryland. Maryland ended up winning 31-30, I think in OT. I seem to remember that SC was inbounding the ball with a few seconds left and holding a 3 or 4 point lead, but would up losing on two consecutive steals of inbounds passes and MD converting both steals into baskets.

How about the time when Laurel County's Cardinal got decked by a Corbin player.

Yep I was the Manager for Corbin that year, wait thats the year a Laurel fan got decked by a Corbin player, or was it same year, I dont remember...

Back in the Early 1980's Duke-UNC...Duke played a 2-3 and Dean Smith refused to play against it.....halftime score of 7-0. 2nd half Dean decided to play and they wound up losing 47-40, with the 1st half as the margin of victory.

Didn't UK play Kansas around '78-'80 and were down like 9 with :17 left and came back to win the game.

 

I can't recall all the details but I remember watching it and was just amazed. Anyone remember the actual score and time remaining.

Henry Clay vs. Hazard at Bryan Station in the Defenders of the Station 2 years ago...Hazard goes up by one on a free throw with three seconds left and the clock stopped. After Hazard hit the shot, the scorekeeper started the clock before it was inbounded, stopped it, then restarted it when it was inbounded...Henry Clay lost almost all of the time on the clock, didn't get a shot off, the officials ran off the court, and it was over.

I also saw ex-Cleveland State basketball coach Kevin Mackey coaching a minor league basketball game and getting a technical for throwing a cup of ice on the court. A referee at the end of the game awarded the opposing team three free throws when he was fouled passing the ball from about 25 feet out, and Mackey's team lost.

I don't remember the score, but I do remember Dwight Anderson took a charge from a Kansas player late in the game to give UK the ball back, and the bragged about it the next day in the newspaper, saying he faked it and it wasn't fouled. I think Coach Hall had a little talk with him the next day about stupid statements to the press. Anyway, they got the ball back because of the charge, and Kyle Macy hit two free throws to win it.

37th District Finals at Harrison County in 1997 I think. Harrison was up by 9 at the half over Bourbon County. The river was rising and at halftime it was decided that for Bourbon County and their fans to get home safely the game would be called. KHSAA rules called for a coin toss to decide the winner. Bourbon County won the coin toss and the class act that they were, they came out and cut the nets down before leaving.

One of the weirdest things and amazing things i have ever seen was when Magoffin played,I believe Pike Central at home in 2000 or 2001. Magoffin's PG was put to the line with about 1 second left and they was up one and he had 2 shots. Hit the first and Coach Adams told him to miss the second so they couldn't throw a long pass and hit a lucky shot. Well he missed it and the Pike Central player got the rebound under the goal and slung it from under the other goal and banked it in, and they won. Rather crazy.

It was a ditrict tournament. I think it was Wolfe vs. Powell at Owsley County. Anyway one of the Wolfe County players shot a GRANNY SHOT from HALF COURT to win the game.

The strangest thing I"ve ever seen is how Kentucky played against Kansas and Indiana this season!!!

JB.....Hebron was down 1 point and the 2 point addition made them a winner. I doubt that few even know who John crigler is. The police had to escort the scorekeeper out of the gym. A friend of mine told me who the scorekeeper was and if he is correct, he is a huge Newport HS fan. The next game Newport beat Hebron and went to state. I do think Newprt had the best team as well as the advantage of playing at home. The Holmes team was very good and they did have a shot though. Are you related to Jack Cousins of McNick?
