The 17 I got in Math on my ACT says I don't have a great chance of getting this right, so I'll refrain from answering. I'm still trying to figure out how many squares are in that stupid picture.

It is slightly more difficult to do without the parentheses since some of it runs together, but the answer is 20.

Keep 'em coming, I love the mental workout!

Keep posting these, they make me feel smart. :D

20! I am surprised to be correct. I guess that daily math facts with 4th grader plus pre-calc HW help with senior are keeping the brain busy!

You got this, Randy! Just think--multiplication wins every time.

4 x 4 + 4 x 4 + 4 - 4 x 4=???????

With all the invisible parenthesis:

(((4x4)+(4x4)+4)-(4x4)) =

Step 1: Multiplication left to right

((16+16)+4)-16) =

Step 2: Addition left to right

((32+4)-16) =

(36-16) =

Step 3: Subtraction left to right

20

20 is the correct answer. Of course I just see numbers, pluses, minuses, multipliers and I go to work. Even punched into a calculator as it is written and the answer is 20. I just knew the calculator would say 320. Smh.....

I hate math.

A 17 on the math portion of your ACT in the 5th grade is nothing to be ashamed of.

BGCard is right, but I did it a little simpler.

All you need to do is put parenthesis around your multiplication or division

(4 x 4) + (4 x 4) + 4 - (4 x 4)

Then solve everything in parenthesis first, which will reduce it down to all addition and subtraction

16 + 16 + 4 - 16

Then add and subtract left to right

20

This is what I did as well.

I'm in the first grade, but I appreciate your kindness. :thumb:

You don't need parenthesis in this problem. You just need to know what order to do the math.

Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

In that order.

PEMDAS (aka Order of Operations) is your friend in this problem!
