No hurt feelings at all. You should be very proud of the tradition that Highlands has built over the years and decades. I just thought that it was a little premature to call a game that is over a year away.

I think the first game with highlands has a little to do with Lickert being an ex cake eater.

I agree Birdbath. I like their confidence and the direction Lickert has them heading. Regardless of how much of a favorite the Birds may be, I think it will draw a huge crowd and fill the new stadium. Maybe that is what they are going for here. Instead of bringing in Harrison or Mason County why not bring in a great program with huge following. That is the only reason I can think of because like Raiderbird said, CC has a slim chance at winning.

 

Didn't NKU open up the Bank of Ky center with Louisville?? You think they thought they had a chance to win that one or did they want the exposure Louisville could bring. But if memory serves me right, it wasn't a blowout. But you get my point!

Scheduling Highlands for the first game is a great move by Lickert. Great motivator for the upcoming off season. If what I hear about Campbell County is accurate, I wouldn't be counting on a Highlands win as a certainty. Campbell County will be really good next year.

Without sounding like sour grapes, because CCHS did put it on New Cath friday night. What does it really mean for either program. Campbell is a 6A program, they should win. They were bigger, they 2 platoon and was healthy (as far as i know). Most of the New Cath players go both ways and have some starters and roll players out. Not looking for excuses, thats just the facts. In the end, New Cath will be able to compete for a 2A championship, Campbell doesnt have a snowballs chance in hell at winning a 6A championship (unless Trinity does away with football this year). Thats the reality, end of story. Congrats on the big win though.

I remember when Campbell had their teams with Menetry and company back in the mid 1990's and they were very good either by coincidence or not, NCC had some of their weaker teams in the past 30 years.

 

My perception (maybe incorrectly) is that NCC's numbers both in their school and on their football teams are down. The loss of a key player or two could have an impact on NCC. I still don't think Brossart is a real option for kids outside of St. Mary's, who are mulling their football options.

So Campbell will be justified then and not criticized next year if they drop NCC. You said yourself they are suppose to beat them anyway so they get no credit for doing so. So NCC can go ahead and schedule others on their run to their next "State Championship" since that all that's seems to matter to you.

 

Also, they will play Highlands next year but I don't believe it will be the opener.

It is and is going to be cyclical at NewCath. For the history of BGP, NewCath has been one of the best small schools in the state. Just before BGP, NewCath was just coming out of its "Dark Ages." The results weren't coming and the size wasn't either. NewCath is one bad defensive possession from being 2-1. They are not as healthy as you hope they will be. By the end of the year, they will be fine. Even healthy, this was a bad matchup for NewCath. You have a 220 lb QB running w/ what amounts to be an extra blocker. NewCath doesn't have the size this year to not commit 9 players to stop that. As soon as he completed that first TD pass, it was lights out. The sky is not falling. Not every year will be 13-2. However, they are playing a lot of younger guys right now, and that will only benefit them at the end of the season. As I state earlier, I would only like to see them be a little more excited about playing football.

Who cares who's feelings you hurt man. I have probably ruffled thousands of feathers on here, including some of the hometown fans. They need to develop some thick skin and stop taking posts on forum so personally. Its just a HS forum for criminy sakes. People need to lighten up and speak their own words. mex, do you have any feel for what the future holds for NCC football? I realize no one can predict the future, but if I recall properly from what I've read on here and heard around town, the numbers for NCC football have been down recently. Is my recollection correct? If so, do you have feel for what is causing such? The economy; other reasons?

 

I've also heard that if Lickert continues to build success at CC, it would hurt NCC as some of the "county Catholics" that weren't already going to go to Brossart would start choosing CC over NCC. Any thoughts on that? If CC pulled just a couple of good football players away from NCC per year, I could see it having a magnified impact on NCC because of its small size. If it does work out that way, it will be some confirmation of what I've said about the public private issue in the state: that being, the best way to stop the private schools (as well as schools like Highlands) from attracting out of district students from other schools is for the other schools to improve their game so that kids won't want to leave. If the public schools in Louisville and Lex were/had been making the commitment that Trinity, X and LexCath are/have been making to football, those three schools would not be near as dominant as they have been. Sounds like a couple of public schools in Lou have ratcheted it up. Don't feel the same about the public schools in Lex, but maybe I'm mistaking. All I hear about Lex is that it's become a soccer town on the high school level.

Maybe there is no correlation, but I believe Cov. Cath also got a few St. Mary's kids during that mid to late 1990's period.

There are so many different reasons that go into a downturn, as you know. This may just be a bad beginning of a year. I believe that the JR. High team has played in the last few finals of the JR. High League small division and the Freshmen have been decent. As for the future, I don't know that many newer families, so I can't say. The only group that I can say anything definitive about is a the 5th and 6th group. I know that they have a lot of good athletes from families known for good athletes. I can't help but think that the 7th and 8th grades have the same.

 

As for CC, I'm not worried about "County Catholics," who attend Catholic elementary schools. There will always be the belief, founded or not (I have no clue how true it is) that the education at NewCath is superior to the one at Campbell Co. So, whereas you can send Ft. Thomas Catholic students to a community oriented public school with a much broader curriculum , Catholics in the south will still select either Brossart or NewCath for the perceived increase in discipline and structure. (Fair or not, that is the view). Losing students to Campbell Co. is different than losing them to Highlands. At Highlands you get a fantastic education and play for state titles. At CC, you get (again, perceived) so-so education and will be lucky to get out of the Regional Finals every year. So, the legitimate fear is not losing 8th graders. The fear is that the "County Catholics" stop sending their kids to Catholic elementary schools.

 

I think that CC's rebirth is coming down to getting kids to play that go to school there, not getting a new type of student to enroll. They've always had the athletes. It was always a challenge to get them to dedicate themselves to football first, and field parties second. Lickert is getting that at the high school level. More importantly, though, there are more options for young players now that they have their own league. So instead of washing out of the Red Devils at the age of 10, they are playing all the way until high school. Not just as part of the team, but actually playing. This has had to have had a positive impact.

For what it is worth, after NewCath beat Mayfield in the '05 state championship game, I spoke with a few Mayfield fans at our hotel. They were concerned about enrollment, and their numbers. They felt like they were about to lose their spot on the top of the hill in Western KY 1A. Now we are hearing the same thing. If we share Mayfield's fate, I'll take it.

236 yards passing I would say that's pretty darn good. I don't think hightchew ever put up more than 200 yards his whole career at ncc
