Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo responded to Cole Hamels’ admission he drilled Bryce Harper on purpose last night in harsh terms, saying MLB should suspend Hamels and calling out Hamels as “fake tough.”

 

“Players take care of themselves,” Rizzo said after I called him this morning. “I’ve never seen a more classless, gutless chicken [bleep] act in my 30 years in baseball.

 

 

 

I imagine we'll see a Strausburg fastball find the back of Ryan Howard, or Chase Utley if they make it back anytime soon, if not it will probably be Rollins or Pence that pays the price.

That is bull. There was not that kind of reaction at the time, but now all of a sudden since Hamels admitted what everyone knew he was doing he is a thug. Unwritten baseball rules have their place, but some of them make absolutely no sense. Move on.

I’m not a fan of Hamels and I’m not a fan of Harper’s haircut or his intentionally smeared eye black that seems all the rage these days with the kids, so I don’t have a dog in the fight so to speak, but stealing home after being plunked is pretty punkrock...

 

Mark my words, Bryce Harper's 100% all-out, all the time effort (a la Ryan Freel) will land him on the DL sooner rather than later. Though, the Cult of Charlie Hustle - aka most Cincy fans - will never understand it, going full speed all the time, including into walls, the stands, diving for every ball, and sliding head first into bags is not a very responsible (to your team or to your contract) way to play.

 

What’s better, diving full speed 3 rows deep into the stands after a foul ball with 2 out and none on in a 4 run game in LA and in the process kicking an elderly woman in the face and cutting her with your spikes? Or letting the foul drop four rows deep, not injuring yourself and others, and “living to fight another day?” (Yes, this is an actual description of a Ryan Freel play. I remember it so distinctly because it was the exact moment that I knew the Ryan Freel was not a scrappy player squeezing every drop out of his abilities and thus earning the admiration of every Pete Rose Reds fan, but in actuality, just an idiot.)

In reality if you want to suspend a pitcher I have always thought 7 games should be the minimum. 5 games in essence means pushing back his start by one day, does it not? But the unfair part is that pitchers are compensated whether they compete that game or not. Slippery slope.

I love it. More drama in baseball please.

Honestly whether it was called by the dugout or not the manager should get some games as well. There was no excuse for what happened.

Who cares? He's a kid, with a ton of talent. Anyone who was even the star of just their high school team is cocky. Now being a kid who's arguably one of the most talented players at his age of all time. He's got every right to be cocky/confident. He'll grow out of it his brashness as he gets older. He's 19, so I got no beef with him. I love the way he plays!

This style of play is how Freel earned a living and stuck on a ML roster...he wasnt the most talented or fastest player but he made his self appear to be both of these by going all out...I loved Freel...Harper on the other hamd will slow down in time he will not always play like Charlie Hustle right now he is kust making a splash...He has one of the sweetest swings and strongest arms in the last 20 years and does not have to kill himself tk earn a check ala Freel...

Harper is only 19. Find me a 19 year old kid that DOESN'T play as hard as Harper and I'll show you a 19 year old on the bench or "retired" from the game of baseball.
