NOT POISON IVY

People often accuse Virginia Creeper of being Poison Ivy, and sometimes people who don't know better know that Poison Ivy has "leaves of three", and thereby they accuse Virginia Creeper of being Poison Oak or Poison Sumac. Virginia Creeper has 5-leaf finger-like (digitate) clusters. The leaves are diamond shaped rhomboids, and the leaf margins are much more pointed, even resembling serration.

Poison Oak is much like Poison Ivy. Again, leaves growing in groups of three. The leaf shape is somewhat lobed, though, and poison oak grows as a small shrub rather than as a vine. The shrub generally doesn't get much taller than 2 or 2-1/2 feet. Also, like Poison Ivy, it has tiny greenish-yellow clusters of flowers at times, and also bears small greenish-yellow berry clusters, and turns a pretty red/orange color in the fall.

 

I don't know that I've ever seen Poison Sumac in person, but it tends to occur in slightly more warm climates than Kentucky. It appears as a tall shrub or small tree, and it likes riverbank areas, creeks, and lowlands that tend to hold water. Leaves are a narrow elliptic shape, with slight points on both ends, and smooth edges. The leaves are a slightly yellowish green color, and grow in a pinnate format, with paired leaves on each side of the branch, and a single leaf at the end of the branch. Like Poison Ivy and Poison Oak, it has small greenish-yellow berry clusters, and turns a pretty red/orange color in the fall.

Clorox for me last couple of times I got it. Now I'd probably go for the steroid shot.

I usually have a pretty high pain tolerance, butt this miserable poison ivy outbreak forced my hand.

Had to go to the doctor, no ifs, ands or butts about it.

 

Hoping it's over soon, butt only time will tell.

Must have brushed some PI this past Sunday helping the oldest move some deer stands. Also doing the Clorox thing.

Thanks! Got a 5 hour sound sleep stretch for the first time since the outbreak! The shot must be working! :dancingpa

 

Also learned from the doc that once you get it, the poison ivy kind of gets into your blood stream. So you can get irritating spots in other places that did not actually touch the plant. That's why a bad case of it can take a couple weeks before it is gone.

I am a mess!!! I was weeding and wearing gloves. Must have touched my face accidently with gloves, probably flicking away a bug. Area under my chin is a mess. Woke up with blisters on my cheek----the one near my eye. :no:

Oh no! Don't wait, go ahead and get to Doc this morning, don't want to spend the holiday weekend in misery!

I had a pretty bad bout of the stuff a few weeks ago after weedeating for a couple hours. Large areas on one arm, my chest, and stomach with small spots on other arm, leg, and face. This probably should be combined with the sweating thread because I was covered, but I assume the poison ivy spread seeped through since I sweated through my clothes.

 

I thought I tried just about everything OTC and avoided going to the doctor but it wasn't getting any better. My pharmacist recommended a scrub and it worked wonders. It was actually just called Poison Ivy Medicated Scrub, and it was awesome. I used it in the shower and it felt great because the scrub actually felt like I was scratching it, and it didn't itch for a while after the shower. After I started using it, the rashes finally started to go away.

When I was young I was really allergic to it. I wouldn't even have to touch it to get it. I got it real bad one time when I was outside playing while a neighbor was knocking down all his poison ivy with a weed eater.

Thank God that poison oak is a lot less common than poison ivy.
