...it appears Dixie got back on the right track last night with a 11-1 W in 5 innings against a good New Cath team.

 

Tip of the hat to Dixie pitcher Griffin Smallwood who had the following stat line. 5IP, 1H, 2BB, 1R, 0ER, 13K and 2A. That's all 15 outs by him.

Birds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in large part due to several errors by Conner. First run was driven in by 7th grader Frinfrock. Walkenhorst scattered several hits over 4 innings but was able to get out of trouble in each of the 1st 4 innings. Conner scored 3 times in the 5th. Orne allowed 1 run over 3+ innings of relief to record the win. Schultz had a couple of base hits for the Birds. Winning run in the 8th inning scored on an error by Conner.

 

# 44 and 17 threw good games for Conner.

To win you must simply put the BEST 9 players on the field each and every game that will give you the best chance to win. Not the most dedicated or the kid that wears his hat the perfect or the kid that is a one sport player and because of that something is owed to him.

Bullshot!!!! I dont care if the kid pitches 3 innings and then goes and delivers papers, put the best 9 athletes on the field,,,,Period.

At the end of the day it boils down to W&L.

 

I do agree with Tdy, balance is key here as well in regards to age groups. HHS will begin its comeback when Frosh consist of Frosh, JV consists of Soph and JR and Varsity consists of the 9 BEST players in the program regardless of the age.

At Varsity level, I agree. Play the best 9 over the season, try to win and try to be your best heading into District Tourney & beyond.

 

At the Frosh & JV level, I think you play your best most of the time and try to win because that helps all of the kids learn to win. However, I think you also have to try to develop talent that may help you win over time at the Varsity level. You may not pinch hit a better hitter to allow the kid at bat to either get it done himself and get confidence from that OR fail and learn what he needs to do the next time. You may not bring in a "hammer" reliever to close a game to let the current pitcher either learn to get out of jams himself OR fail and learn what he needs to do next time to change the result. I know the Reds are more concerned about developing talent at Louisville, Pensacola, Bakersfield, Dayton and Billings than Wins & Losses.

 

It is not the same as the playing time requirements in the FTJFL, but some of the principles are the same. If a kid never gets a chance and leaves the program, he can never help the program.
