Trouble Sleeping - Help?

Featured Replies

Time Change is killing me, but what Randy said might be some help. I listen to preaching and it relaxes me and I fall asleep, but then later it wakes me up due to the music.

I was actually saying that with a sarcastic tone. While I enjoy good preaching, Joel Osteen is one of the last guys I'd go to looking for it.

I used to be a very heavy sleeper. Until I got married it wasn't unusual for me to sleep for 12 hours. Lately I've been tired constantly but since giving up the drink for Lent I've found that I keep a more regular pattern and feel much better. Try a benadryl.

Everyone probably has figured out I am an Insomniac with my random posts at all hours of the night and day.

I take melatonin once in a while but the thing that has helped me most is excercising in the morning and by the end of the night I am pooped but I also wake up after 5 hrs typically. I have a deviated septum so I am thinking its my breathing patterns. I snore a lot and my wife rolls me over all night long.

You sound about like me, working out early before work helps me the most. I also snore and think it wakes me at times that or the girl does, she woke me up Monday morning at 7 begging me to take some nose spray because I was congested and snoring very loud.

MJ I totally feel for you! I have had trouble sleeping for 10/15 years. Since having cancer it has gotten worse. I like you have no trouble falling asleep usually its the staying asleep. I have tried a million and one things but few seem to work. I don't believe in taking sleep aids (prescriptions) but I have been using Melatonin and it seems to help.

Have you seen a doctor about this?

I haven't seen anyone for it yet. I'm getting to the point where I think that I'm going too. For a while there I thought it was stress related, but after finding a good job and being able to relax in regards to that, I was hoping it would sort of stop, but I feel like its worse now than ever.

I might try the Melatonin first, since that seems to work for some. You can just get that at a local drug store?

I am with you. It doesn't seem to matter if I am stressed or not, eat certain things or not, drink adult beverages or not and the long list of others things they say causes a disruption in sleep. I take that back...there is ONE thing that I try to avoid if possible in the early to late evening...caffeine! Of course I am so high strung anyways...I don't need caffeine!

Yes, you can buy it over the counter at any drug store. You should consider seeing a doctor about this.

The weird thing is that it doesn't seem to affect me to much during the day. Like I still have all the energy I want/need. It's just annoying to wake up so many times at night!

Well, something that has helped me a bit is getting into bed around the same time at night, but more importantly I avoid getting into bed before I'm planning to go to sleep. I'm usually pretty bad about reading or watching TV/movies or clicking around the internet for a few hours while in bed then trying to sleep. So it helps to do all that stuff, then get in bed with no distractions. If there's something keeping your mind occupied or making you anxious that will keep you up too. Basically, your mind will keep you awake so it can think, whether it's about a movie you were just watching or about some kind of deadline a month down the road.

I agree especially with the point about trying to keep to a routine. It only takes me a day to mess up my routine, but when I go to sleep and wake up close to the same time everyday, I sleep much better. It is not great for the social life however. As far as hydrating be careful you don't change one issue for another....if you hydrate too much before bedtime, you will be getting up also. Are you getting enough exercise, managing stress and eating right? These all can factor in. I can relate. I am a terrible sleeper....one thing I have to have is "white noise"...a small fan in my case... to drown out other noises that wake me up.

That's the funny thing doomer. I actually am exercising and eating the best I have in probably five years. Been dieting and down about 18 pounds since New Year's. So its funny because I'm doing the things people say to do...for the most part haha!

It doesn't sounds like you have sleep apnea but I'm not a Dr. I would do a sleep study.

Just to brainstorm this....another thing I like is a really cool room. I seem to sleep better if I am cold and need covers....can't fall or stay asleep at all if I am too warm. Maybe you already try this...but a thought.

The best sleep I ever get is the sleep I get after dozing off while reading. Not sure if this helps at all, but I've never heard of reading hurting anyone!

I don't know how old you are, but I started having trouble sleeping when I hit my 40's. Kroger sells Sleep Aid, which is Benedryl and over the counter. Try one, which is 50 mg, a pretty strong dose. I have been using them for years and I love them.

Can't Benadryl keep some people awake though?
