March 13, 201214 yr I've kinda had trouble sleeping for quite some time, but lately it seems like its at its worst. It's not so much that I can't fall asleep, its that I wake up 6-7 times a night, sometimes more. I've been trying to read up on a few things that it might be and I'm thinking my issue might be that my body isn't hydrated enough. Anyone else have this problem? I know a lot of it depends on your diet, lifestyle, and other factors, but just thought I'd ask what works for others.
March 13, 201214 yr Author Have you done a sleep study? No, I've never done anything like that. But I'm to the point where it might be a good idea.
March 13, 201214 yr I know a lot of people that swear by melatonin. It is a hormone that is produced naturally in the body so I believe it to be safe. You can buy it over the counter in the vitamin/supplement section. The only negative I've heard is that it can make you have some really vivid dreams...and maybe nightmares.
March 13, 201214 yr I've never had any luck with melotonin. What is your nighttime routine like? Sometimes that makes a big difference.
March 13, 201214 yr Author I've never had any luck with melotonin. What is your nighttime routine like? Sometimes that makes a big difference. Usually get home from the gym about 7:30, eat dinner, then just relax watching sports or a movie during the week. On weekends, there really is no pattern at all. And I will admit usually at least one night, sometimes two, I'm up late and indulging in adult beverages.

And I will admit usually at least one night, sometimes two, I'm up late and indulging in adult beverages. Well, something that has helped me a bit is getting into bed around the same time at night, but more importantly I avoid getting into bed before I'm planning to go to sleep. I'm usually pretty bad about reading or watching TV/movies or clicking around the internet for a few hours while in bed then trying to sleep. So it helps to do all that stuff, then get in bed with no distractions. If there's something keeping your mind occupied or making you anxious that will keep you up too. Basically, your mind will keep you awake so it can think, whether it's about a movie you were just watching or about some kind of deadline a month down the road.
March 13, 201214 yr I've never had any luck with melatonin. What is your nighttime routine like? Sometimes that makes a big difference. Same here...melatonin didn't do a thing with me. I've been a diagnosed insomniac for almost 15 years now, and apart from prescription medicines (which only help me personally for the first 2-3 weeks that I'm taking them), I've found little to help apart from: Spending time without stimulation (television/music/internet) for the last hour-or-so before bed. Reducing unneeded outside stimuli allows your body and mind to more easily relax on their own. Don't overdo it on alcohol, and don't drink any booze for the last couple of hours before you go to bed. Believe it or not, alcohol really doesn't help you get good sleep, trust me. You may fall asleep, but alcohol-induced sleep has been proven to be minimally restful sleep. Maintain the same sleeping hours. Your body needs a routine. You need to try to go to sleep and wake up as close to the same time on a daily basis as possible - and unfortunately, that means on the weekends too. DON'T NAP. If you have trouble sleeping - especially trouble falling asleep - napping is often a chief offending cause.

I know you are right in regards to it probably not being the most restful sleep. But when I drink on a weekend, I typically don't wake up throughout the night and sleep right through.

I find red wine helps....a glass (or two...no more than two), and I'm asleep all night long.
March 13, 201214 yr Time Change is killing me, but what Randy said might be some help. I listen to preaching and it relaxes me and I fall asleep, but then later it wakes me up due to the music.

March 13, 201214 yr The 10 mg "time released melatonin" actually works for me. That a couple of beers.
March 14, 201214 yr Author Sounds like you've found your answer! Haha, I was hoping to find another solution.
