Class 1A

It was a separation Friday in Class 1A with some huge games helping to sort the pack. Beechwood may have lost to 3A Corbin, but they still proved they are one of the better small school teams in the State. Pikeville put everyone on alert by dominating Paintsville. Both the Tigers and Panthers take it up yet another notch this week drawing perhaps both team's stiffest regular season opponent. Raceland needed two days to put away a solid 4A Greenup County and Hazard came up short against 2A Somerset. The biggest game featuring two 1A teams will be Paintsville travelling to Williamsburg.

1. Beechwood at 5A #1 Covington Catholic

2. Pikeville vs. 3A #4 Belfry

3. Raceland vs. Valley (OH) (9/15)

4. Hazard -- OPEN

5. Paintsville at #9 Williamsburg

6. Campbellsville vs. 2A Monroe County

7. Crittenden County vs. 2A Webster County

8. Louisville Holy Cross at Paris

9. Williamsburg vs. #5 Paintsville

10. Ludlow at 2A Newport

Class 2A

Though the previous week was not headlined by especially high profile match-ups, the results spawned from some of the games certainly made statements toward who is trending as a contender or who still has a lot of work to do. Christian Academy of Louisville looked sharp once more by cruising past 3A Elizabethtown, Mayfield smoked rival 6A McCracken County, and Somerset took down a solid 1A Hazard. On the flip side of the coin, Danville wishes they could have a "do-over" against Pulaski County and both Lexington Christian and Newport Central Catholic probably feel the same. Newport Central Catholic shocked Christian Academy of Louisville last year and will take aim for retribution, LCA can right the ship against Walton-Verona, and Danville gets a suddenly surging Waggener.

1. DeSales at 5A Fern Creek

2. Mayfield at 5A Graves County

3. Christian Academy of Louisville vs. #8 Newport Central Catholic

4. Glasgow vs. 4A Warren East

5. Owensboro Catholic at 5A #9 Apollo

6. Somerset at 5A North Laurel

7. Danville vs. 3A Waggener

8. Newport Central Catholic at #3 Christian Academy of Louisville

9. Lloyd at 4A Holmes

10. Walton-Verona vs. Lexington Christian

Class 3A

Boyle County coasted past 4A Wayne County, but the bigger statement for the Rebels may have been their earlier season win over 6A Ballard. The Bruins handed Central their first loss. The Yellowjackets need to re-calibrate in a hurry as St. Xavier is next on the agenda. Belfry made short work of a ranked 2A Newport Central Catholic, but expect the Pirates to get a much stiffer test when they go down a class further against a very good 1A Pikeville team. Lexington Catholic felt little resistance from 2A Lexington Christian, but they will also ramp up against a Highlands team that has seemingly figured out all the woes that plagued them in 20017.

1. Boyle County vs. 4A Collins

2. Corbin -- OPEN

3. Central at 6A #4 St. Xavier

4. Belfry at 1A #2 Pikeville

5. Lexington Catholic vs. 5A #6 Highlands

6. Casey County vs. 6A Jeffersontown

7. Caldwell County vs. 6A Henderson County

8. Bell County vs. 5A Whitley County

9. Paducah Tilghman vs. 4A #7 Hopkinsville

10. Elizabethtown at Thomas Nelson

Class 4A

Entering this week, the Top 4 of Class 4A has done a pretty solid job of solidifying their place. All four coasted to blowout wins, Johnson Central should get a bit of a tougher challenge against undefeated Moore and Franklin-Simpson should break a sweat against 6A Meade County. Logan County continues to ride the success of last year's surprising season and have won their way into a Top 5 ranking. They can't just mail it in this week, as 2A McLean County is a vastly improved club. Hopkinsville needs a win in a bad way after falling to 5A Christian County. The Tigers will have to earn it against a better 3A Tilghman team than many expected. Franklin County has a chance to make a move up in the rankings against a very good 5A Anderson County.

1. Johnson Central vs. #9 Moore

2. Franklin-Simpson at 6A Meade County

3. Ashland at Ironton (OH)

4. Knox Central at 2A Green County

5. Logan County at 2A McLean County

6. Wayne County at 5A Harlan County

7. Hopkinsville at 3A #9 Paducah Tilghman

8. Franklin County at 5A #7 Anderson County

9. Moore at #1 Johnson Central

10. Greenup County at 3A Lawrence County

Class 5A

Defending Champion Covington Catholic is looking more and more like the dropoff many had hoped could happen may not be coming. The Colonels smoked a solid Ohio foe and now set their sites on 1A's top team. Bowling Green took care of 5A Owensboro after a stiff test, but their edge in the rankings are shrinking rapidly after crosstown foe South Warren obliterated previously ranked 6A Central Hardin (a team Bowling Green did not beast nearly as lopsided). Highlands continues to show that they are returning to form and have their chance for a big statement against undefeated 3A Lexington Catholic. Spots 7 thru 9 each have interesting tests against quality teams. Expect some shakeup potentially next week as a likely outcome.

1. Covington Catholic vs. 1A #1 Beechwood

2. Bowling Green at 4A Warren Central

3. South Warren at Grayson County

4. South Oldham vs. 6A Boone County

5. Southwestern vs. Madison Southern

6. Highlands at 3A #5 Lexington Catholic

7. Anderson County vs. 4A #8 Franklin County

8. Owensboro vs. 6A Daviess County

9. Apollo vs. 2A #5 Owensboro Catholic

10. Christian County -- OPEN

Class 6A

Trinity lost. Again. Male was the latest team to hand the Shamrocks a "L" as Trinity remains winless against a brutal schedule. As a result, the Bulldogs now assume the pole position. Trinity may not be out of the woods yet as well. Their next foe is accustomed to success in Illinois and will be no sure thing to break into the win column despite their 1-2 record. Scott Couty made perhaps the biggest statement of the year for a Kentucky team by beating Moeller on the road. The Cardinals look to claim their second straight GCL victim against LaSalle. St. Xavier is a team in need of a signature win and will look for it against 3A Central. The team who beat Central last week, the Ballard Bruins, looked good and will have a chance to improve their resume even more against Manual. Frederick Douglass appears to clearly be the best team in Lexington after demolishing Lafayette. The Stallions now look to make Madison Central leave the Top 10 about as soon as they entered it.

1. Male vs. 4A Western

2. Scott County vs. La Salle (OH)

3. Trinity vs. Naperville Central (IL)

4. Saint Xavier vs. 3A #2 Central

5. Frederick Douglass at #10 Madison Central

6. Butler vs. 5A Doss

7. Simon Kenton at 6A Cooper

8. Ballard vs. #9 Manual

9. Manual at #8 Ballard

10. Madison Central vs. #5 Frederick Douglass
