Class 1A

Paintsville has no problem taking on the best the East has to offer regardless of District. The Tigers put Hazard on a list that also included Williamsburg and Pikeville as teams Paintsville have defeated. Up next is the final piece to the puzzle versus Raceland in a game that will determine the District Champion. Beechwood made yet another statement of dominance by crushing Ludlow. Paris and Frankfort also turned heads with key wins in District games. Frankfort’s work is not quite done as they need to take down Kentucky Country Day this week to keep their momentum going.

The story of the week in Class 2A is the Lloyd Juggernauts. Lloyd handed Newport Central Catholic a rare District loss and got the best of the Thoroughbreds for the first time in many years and now take hold on winning the District Title. Lexington Christian Academy handled Somerset with almost surprising ease and now loads up for a massive showdown with Danville. These two split the season series last year and provided two instant classic type of games. Boyle County is starting to become one of the the favorite contenders for the State Title. Before Boyle could legitimize those claims they first needed to get over the hump against Lexington Catholic. The Rebels did so in emphatic fashion and now focus on Western Hills and WanDale Robinson. Elizabethtown, Belfry, and Fleming County all essentially wrapped up a District Title. Corbin is still one of very few teams with some heavy lifting left to do. Class 4A

It was a surprising week of fairly predictable outcomes for the Top 10 of Class 4A. The only ranked team to take a loss was Allen County- Scottsville as the rest of the teams with numbers by their names held form. Two games in particular did bring a little drama. Ashland got into a shootout with Greenup County but was able to pull away late. They wrap up their season in a massive clash with rival Johnson Central. Logan County kept the dream season going and kept their unblemished record intact by defeating Madisonville in a game that came down to the wire. Scott makes their Top 10 debut after defeating Bourbon County for the District Title. Though Rockcastle County and Knox Central are both chasing Wayne County’s tail lights, these two will face off in a game ripe with playoff implications.

The guard may officially be changing in Northern Kentucky. After years of coming up just short to Highlands, Covington Catholic seems to be taking the upper hand in the rivalry and made a statement by obliterating the Bluebirds with a running clock. The name of the game this week is “Cross Town Rivalries”. The headliner is a long awaited battle between Bowling Green and South Warren, but the Battle of Somerset featuring Southwestern and Pulaski County is always a game much anticipated game. Graves County almost handed Christian County their only loss but came up just short. The Eagles look for their elusive statement win against an Owensboro team that will be angry after falling to Apollo.

2. Bowling Green vs. #3 South Warren

3. South Warren at #2 Bowling Green

Class 6A

Most pundits felt as if Male and St. Xavier were pretty evenly matched based off previous outcomes of common opponents. St. Xavier gave a case study in why comparing scores is not the best barometer by defeating Male soundly and essentially securing the honor of Regular Season Runner-Up to Trinity in Jefferson County. Butler hopes the Tigers are still celebrating their big win as they try to pull the upset this week. Simon Kenton kept their undefeated season going by winning an Offensive shootout with Campbell County. The Pioneers now get to contest Ryle for Northern Kentucky supremacy in a game with major implications. Pleasure Ridge Park improved their resume by defeating Manual, and the Panthers now cross Region Lines and will battle #2 Scott County in a big clash of heavyweights.
