article 10th Region Recap and Rankings - 1/30/17

Last week saw the region's top team's 16-game winning streak snapped and the region's new number 2 take home the All-A hardware. Here we go...

1. Campbell County (20-2, 8-1 region). Coach Russell's squad ran into a buzzsaw at state top-5 Covington Catholic last week, bringing an end to "the streak". Bertsch, Day and Hegyi tallied double figures and hung tough for the better part of three quarters, but CVH and crew were too much. The Camels rallied later on for easy victories over Montgomery County and Bourbon County, with Hegyi and Bertsch again leading the way. Harrison County, Bellevue and Newport are up next.

2. Paris (19-6, 10-1 region). The Greyhounds won the All-A championship last week after first dispatching Mason County by 11 at the Fieldhouse. The Hounds took down Elliott County, Owensboro Catholic, Lexington Christian and Newport Catholic in the All-A. Eric Johnson, Jordan Davis and Marcus Ashford joined MVP Jekobi Wells on the all-tournament team. Paris looks to be much improved since the first couple weeks of the season, and will lace them up at home against district rival Montgomery County and at Corbin this week after a well-deserved four day rest.

3. Scott (15-6, 5-1 region). The Eagles got by Bracken County 84-77 on Friday, then turned around and disposed of Grant County by 21 the next night. Jake Ohmer scored 30 in the win, with little brother Chad adding another dozen; then put a running clock on Grant. Scott only plays one more 10th region game and it's not scheduled until February 10th. Tough week upcoming - Covington Catholic, Conner and Lafayette.

4. Clark County (16-9, 7-2 region). The steady trio of Ryan Cooper, Will Philpot and Jordan Graham paced the Cardinals in a 64-52 triumph over Garrard County. After falling to Madison Central 45-39, the Cards got back on track with a 16-point decision over Montgomery County. The Cards face Mason County at the Fieldhouse in their only action this week.

5. Pendleton County (13-8, 5-2 region). Coach Belcher's Wildcats went 1-1 last week, dropping a 71-67 decision to St. Henry (the Crusaders broke a 10-game losing streak in that one), then getting by 38th district foe Harrison County 54-47 with Dennie out and Allen and Neltner missing time in the second half due to illness and injury respectively. Calvary Christian, Bishop Brossart, and a much-anticipated visit to Bracken County are on this week's schedule.

6. Bracken County (10-11, 7-6 region). Coach Hinson's charges had a 1-2 week, falling to Bourbon County on Tuesday 64-61, defeating Bath County 84-70 on Thursday, the eventually falling to Scott in a close one. Poor shooting from behind the arc and at the line spelled doom for the Polar Bears against Scott. Austin Crawford marches on towards membership in the exclusive 3000 point/1000 rebound club. The emergence of Brady Jones as a force bodes well for the Bears as they face West Carter and Pendleton County this week.

7. Bourbon County (9-14, 5-6 region). The Colonels are back on the upswing after the return of Ameryon Blackburn to the lineup, taking 2 of 3 decisions last week (Bracken County, Model), falling only to region #1 Campbell County. Blackburn and Ransom accounted for 41 of the 64 points in the win at Bracken. Coach Sosby's squad "goes west, young man" this week, taking on Western Hills, Franklin County and Owen County.

8. Nicholas County (10-10, 6-6 region). The Blue Jackets dropped their only decision of the week, a 30-point drubbing at the hands of Frankfort. Five Jackets average over 8 points per game. Berea and Sayre come to Carlisle this week.

9. Mason County (11-14, 4-5 region). The Royals dropped all three of their games last week as they continue to deal with team turmoil. Leevi Dunaway returns is slated to this week's games against Montgomery County and Clark County before returning to the lineup on Saturday against Western Brown (OH).

10. Montgomery County (6-17, 2-6 region). Yet another squad that dropped all their games last week, the Indians fell to Campbell, Clark and Breathitt; staying with Clark until a 2-point fourth quarter nailed the coffin shut. Mason County and 40th foe Paris this week.

The rest:

11. Bishop Brossart (8-14, 5-3). 59-35 over Calvary Christian followe by a 16-point loss to Covington Holy Cross. Augusta, Pendleton County and NewCath this week.

12. Harrison County (4-19, 2-10). 0-3 last week with three tough ones coming up - Simon Kenton, Campbell County and Madison Central). Record is not reflective of the Breds' progress.

13. Augusta (11-9, 6-5). 3-0 last weeks and the Panthers get back above .500, albeit without a true quality win. Brossart and West Carter upcoming.

14. Robertson County (11-8, 2-6). Three wins last week with Beth Haven, St. Patrick, Menifee County and Brown this week.

15. Calvary Christian (9-10, 2-5). Two more wins last week for the Cougars following a loss to Brossart, with a full 4-game slate this week.

16. St. Patrick (7-17, 1-7). Saints hung tough in all their games last week but fell in all of them. Tenth region foes Calvary Christian and Robertson County will give them a chance to move up in the rankings.

17. Silver Grove (3-16, 0-5). The only team not to win a regional game; Calvary Christian, Ludlow and Heritage Academy this week.

I totally agree with these rankings. Campbell,Paris,Scott have separated themselves, although GRC could present problems for anyone having an off night. I hope everyone that makes it to Mason Co. comes with there "A" game so us basketball fans can enjoy the price of admission. #parispride
