Week Nine

The Districts Take Shape

6A Top Teams

Scott County

The Cardinals will likely win their district. In the playoffs they should face #4 seed from District 5 due to this years ‘rotation’. However, looking at District 5 there are only 3 teams. I believe that the #5 team from another district will fill the spot via the KHSAA pat your head and rub your stomach playoff rules. But if the region goes by the chalk a strong Ryle team, coached by former Lexington Catholic assistant Mike Engler,

Offensively, Scott County is relying on the run. Senior Kendrick Hamilton has 11 TDs through 7 games and averages 100 yards a game. Defensively, junior Cooper Rob has five interceptions.

Lafayette

The Generals should win 6A District 8 that includes Tates Creek, Madison Central and George Rogers Clark (GRC). But the last district game is the dangerous Commodores of Tates Creek. District 8 is paired with District 6 that is led by Simon Kenton.

Senior Walker Wood is the engine for the Generals and leads the team in passing, rushing and scoring and is a legitimate contender for Mr. Football. Junior Cameron Morgan has also given the Generals a spark on offense with over 9 yards per carry.

Madison Central

The Indians lost to Lafayette this past weekend but had the Generals tied up at half time. The hallmark of Madison Central this season has been defense. Going into the Lafayette game the Indians were second in points allowed in 6A allowing an average of 10.7 for the season.

Seniors KJ Long and Tristan Moorehead lead the Indians in tackles. Long also has a team leading 4 interceptions and Moorehead has 3 picks.

Takes Creek

The Commodores get a chance at district redemption this weekend against Lafayette. If TC pulls off the upset and Madison Central takes care of George Rogers Clark the district would end in a three-way tie with the tie breakers kicking in.

Offense has been leading the way. Junior Cameron Workman is one of the top 6A quarterbacks. His favorite targets are seniors Jackson Beerman and Turner Gentry who each had over 600 yards receiving after seven games are both in the top 10 of 6A receiving yardage.

Who can win it all?

Its hard to see any of the Lexington/Central Kentucky 6A winning it all. Lafayette could not stop the Rocks early in the season and as they say – ‘Defense wins championships.’ MC and TC would be upsets just to get to the region finals. That leaves Scott County. Maybe Jim McKee has something up his sleeve. The Cardinals are definitely one of the top two 6As in the region. But do they have enough offensive options and a strong enough defense to make the run?

5A Top Teams

Madison Southern

The Eagles can win their second district this weekend and their second district championship in their history if they can get by Anderson County. If they do the will play the #4 team from District 3 (yes, the ‘rotation’ has hit 5A). That would likely be a Bullet County school.

Offensively, the Eagles are not on top of the KHSAA stats in 5A. But their leaders are only juniors. Landen Stacy at quarterback is averaging less than 100 yards per game passing. Carter Smith has over 500 yards at running back. Carter Smith is also the leading tackler on the team.

Anderson County

Anderson County can get some momentum this weekend if they can upset Madison Southern. Junior Blake Franklin leads the Bobcats in rushing and receiving. Senior Bryndon Labhart has also been a major contributor on offense and leads the Bobcats in tackles on defense.

Who can win it all?

Winning the region would be a great accomplishment for either of these teams this year.

4A Overview

Bourbon County and Harrison County are both 3-0 in District 7. They will play this weekend for the district championship. East Jessamine is in the driver seat for District 5 with only a game against rival West Jessamine remaining.

Who can win it all?

With Johnson Central, Wayne County and Rockcastle lurking the two regions getting the semis will be an accomplishment for any the 4As.

3A Overview

With a win over Boyle County, Lexington Catholic should win District 4. The west side of 3A seems to be shaping a lot like last year.

Casey County is taking on Corbin for the title to District 8. Casey has had a great run this season but Corbin will provide a real test.

Who can win it all?

3A favorite this season is Belfry. Casey County will have to face the Pirates before Bowling Green. Boyle County or Lexington Catholic could both make a run again the west and face the Pirates in Bowling Green. For the Knights it would be a rematch.

2A Overview

The champion of District 7 will be decided this weekend between undefeated Lexington Christian and one-loss Danville. Both teams have had a great season. They could meet again in the region no matter who wins the game this week. Both could make a run to Bowling Green and take the 2A crown.

1A Overview

Undefeated Nicholas County beat Paris this past weekend and wins the district with a win at Bracken County. It has been a great year for the Bluejackets. In the playoffs both the Bluejackets and Greyhounds will have to go through Paintsville or Raceland to get out of the region and into the semi-finals. That is a tall order.
