Who got key hits for Trinity?

This is a time when I agree with Roc4ever. PRP is a great fastball hitting team. Amlung's bread and butter is a fastball. Amlung has great potential, yet his best years as a pitcher could be in the future. He has played catcher more than pitched in the past. Cox, I thought, had pitched against Henry Clay on Friday. Two doubles and a homerun were hit off of him. PRP hits the ball from top to bottom in the order as well as any team in the state. They also play defense very well. St. X is capable of hitting the ball very well. St. X has found ways to win close games. Should be interesting.

“I'm not a disgruntled anything. I think very highly of Coach Tompkins. Yes, he's taken teams deep into the playoffs. But it seems that many of his teams had enough to go further and win it all. Just an observation.” Trinity has gone as far or further play-offs than any other 7th region team in the recent past. Winning it all can be very tough. My concern is that you want to bash Tomkins, particularly for playing a sophomore over a senior. The post over a loss seems to focus on this one issue, not looking at a lot of factors of the game. Apollo was ranked number 2 in the state in the coaches’ poll. Other quality wins, like against St. X who was a top 25 team in the country at the time I believe and against Male in the championship of the Male Bulldog Classic, are entirely minimized. The only pre-season All State player was Chris Berry, a junior. Trinity had no pre-season senior high school All-Americans or All-State either. Stephan is a quality high school pitcher, but is he not getting looks by Division 1 schools? Have these seniors been to college camps or showcases to be evaluated? If they stood out at those camps, they would be getting offers already from colleges. You say that Tompkins’ teams “should have gone further.” Tompkins is showing a lot of courage to try to make improvements. He is adding knowledgeable baseball people to the staff. Tompkins has added Stoner to his staff, hasn’t he, who played AAA ball and still has records at North Carolina. Jack Littrell, who played AAA ball for the Dodgers (?), is a valuable resource as well. Tompkins has also been out scouting other teams when other coaches have not. Allowing grade level to determine who plays is archaic and detrimental to a building a program. Maybe this is a key factor for Trinity not developing and doing any better in the past? Trinity has taken much initiative in their sports programs and has broken the mold in the way traditional Louisville Catholic high schools have done things. Change can be painful at times. But I would make much more effort to respect and admire what Tomkins is doing, and the courage to make changes, than to crucify him at the first chance that you can. In fact, since we are talking about Catholic schools, some people believe that a key factor as to why Jesus was crucified was that he challenged the social order of the day. Pretty tragic thing to do to such a quality person. Sometimes working thru the changes can have big pay-offs.

Who expected Shelby County to beat them last year?

I wondered if St. X thought the word was still out on Tompkin's coaching ability after they got beat earlier this year? I thought someone told me that Coach Jefferson said highly praising things about Coach Tompkins in a pre-game interview, like "he's the best coach in the city?" Where were these comments when Trinity beat Male in the final of the Bulldog Classic? I guess Coach Miller should be blamed with PRP's errors against Shelby County in last year's State Tournament semi-final.? So I guess if those "seniors" were playing now that Trinity would be undefeated and have made no errors? What round in the MLB draft do these seniors expect to be drafted?

The Courier report the losing pitcher as "Gott." Trevor Gott is a sophomore at Tates Creek that has done very well as his age/grade level.

Who pitched for Tate's Creek?

Aaron is throwing well. Aaron and Kyle Rizenbergs have the ideal pitcher body frame. Both have the potential to play at the college level and beyond. Matt Miller on the J.V. team is a left hander that has been really effective. He keeps batters off balance very well. Brett Schmeing is a strong-armed third baseman that sometimes is on the mound. He is one of the most athletic players on the team. Ben Pelham is another bright spot for the Tigers. He, too, is very athletic and has had some catching time of the varsity level. There are many players with very bright futures on this team. St. X is blessed with a lot of ability at the J.V. and freshman level. Although the freshmen took their first loss yesterday, it is unfortunate that they have not been challenged enough by the teams that they have played. I hope this team can be focused on setting goals and learning skills. They could be very special by the time that they are seniors if they develop. They have a number of players that would be starting varsity for other teams in Louisville. The freshmen team has 3 pitchers that are throwing in the 80’s – Zach Clooney, Matt Spalding, and Ryan Loehnert. If these 3 develop, by the time that they are seniors they could be a tough trio for opposing teams. Pete Eddings is a left-handed pitcher that could be troublesome coming in after the hard-throwing right-handers. One of the more interesting players to me is Daylen Hall, maybe because he comes from a “football family.” Daylen is a very fast, athletic center fielder. Although he has had very little, if any, formal training as a hitter; he is a very gifted player with a world of ability. There are a number of players on this team that can play at the next level if they continue to develop.

Grade level seems to be often a point of discussion. When is the last time that St. X has won a state baseball championship? Has Trinity won a state championship? Maybe a shift to a love and learning of the game of baseball might offer different results?

When St. X hits the ball and the pitchers are on, they've battled everyone that they've played. The risk in trying to evaluate Manual, I believe, is that there's a big drop off when you go beyond their first two pitchers.

Didn't Stephan pitch for the victory against Male in Male's Buldog Championship? Just can really keep batters off balance when he hits his spots. Should be an interesting game.

Who has Sturgeon pitched against? How is is throwing. What velocity? How is is command of off speed pitches?

Any details of the game. In the paper, it looked like Harness pitched for Manual? Who did for Tates Creek? Who hit the ball well?

Taylor Banks from PRP is knocking the cover off of the ball. He had a homerun against Lexington Catholic and a number doubles down in Florida.

The Manual game can make the district tournament challenging without a doubt. The trap might be to “not think Manual was for real.” Three of Manual’s losses were one run losses to quality teams, including E-town and Henderson. The loss to Providence (IN) on Monday has to be looked at closely as well. In talking to some people at the game, Manual threw their number 5 or 6 pitcher. A key inning involved a call by the umpire who admitted that “he didn’t see the play.” Providence also evidently threw a quality left-hander who had a very good change-up and curve ball. Doerring, too, is developing as a pitcher with the ability to throw in the mid 80’s with three pitches he can throw for strikes. Manual baseball people were happy that the St. X game may have been the best defensive game that Manual has played all year. Sometimes the Manual supporters would say that errors also played into their losses. The 7th region has tough teams in it that can make for difficult one game match-ups, but the loss to Manual could make it even more challenging to get out of the district and into the regional tournament.

Just heard today that Jarred Clarkson has a broken bone in a collision on the field???? Clarkson is a very athletic baseball player.

Trying to think of the junior class. Chris Berry from Trinity immediatlely comes to mind. Although I have not seen him play, Tyler Dunnaway from Eastern is know to be hard-throwing on the mound. Jarred Clarkson from Shelby County has given a verbal commitment to U of L. All three are pre-season All-State this year.

In today’s The Courier-Journal, the Kentuckiana players in the MLB are listed. I wonder how Kentucky compares to other states, especially like Florida, Texas, and California? Please add info about other players from other schools. In position players, one out of the two from Louisville is from St. Xavier – Chris Burke. From the list of pitchers, one out of the 6 listed from Louisville is from St. X – Paul Byrd. The football team at St. X broke in the USA Today national rankings last season. Football involves many students at the school and by far generates the most revenue of the sports. Yet what other sports at St. X currently have professional players at the highest level other than baseball?

From the Courier-Journal, it looks like Flagler came into the game with a 19-3 record. Eric Bainer (2-0) pitched for PRPand got the win. Both of the Bainer twins, Cox, and Hockman hit doubles for PRP. This tournament really seemd to have quality teams in it.

Thanks for the info. I guess this was the game on Friday? Was the team PRP suppose to be pretty good. Did they have a good record? Could anyone give the starting line-up for PRP lately?
