St. Xavier Ranked 23rd In Nation

Featured Replies

Great to see. Let's be there at the end of the season.

According to Baseball America.

Baseball America Top 25

You would have thought the #1 team in the State of Kentucky would be rated higher than St. X in the National poll. Congrats to St. X on the National ranking and exposure.

The national ranking is based on performance and strength of schedule, while the coach's poll is popularity. Sorry about the bluntness.

Based on the score from the Manual game yesterday this national ranking will be short lived.

It will.

I don't know that there is a national high school poll in any sport that is very credible.

The state rankings are crazy, too. There are two teams just off the top 25 this week that aren't even in the top five in their own region.

Based on the score from the Manual game yesterday this national ranking will be short lived.

The schedule they play will allow them to play their way back in in no time if they keep winning. The reason they are nationally ranked is because they have played and beaten good teams from Indiana,Ohio,Tenn, & Alabama as well as KY. They still have games left against Cinn. St.X, Floyd Central, IN, Jeffersonville,IN,Kings,Ohio and the remaining tough Ky schedule. If they keep winning they win be ranked.

I still don't see how anyone can rank them nationally when they are just op 25 in the state and not the best team in Louisville.

Because they have beaten the defending state champs from Indiana,Indianapolis Cathedral, nationally ranked Cinn.Moeller,Brentwood Tn, and 4 teams from Alabama thats how.Who is the best team in Louisville, that is yet to be decided.

All baseball polls are up for alot of debate. There is just so many games being played and alot of wins and loses can come down to whos pitching for a team on a given night. Even the college polls are crazy. Earlier in the season there was a college team ranked in the top 10 in one poll and in another poll they weren't even the top 25.

the national polls can be iffy. teams like prp who could possibly be better than a team like st x but have not had national exposure could slide under the national radar. however i will say BaseballAmerica is one of the most reliable national rankings along with USA Today. great to see kentucky teams getting national exposure

If all you base your opinion on is the score; than you're right.

But most National Polls, especially one as well respected as Baseball America, look at the body of work; not on one isolated game.

This game was a fluke ... a bump in the road. St. X had an off night and Manual was playing over their heads this night. All aided by a bad call at the plate in the fifth inning, that allowed the flood gates to open. This is further evidenced by the fact that Wednesday night J-town beat Manual 6-5 while St. X beat DeSales 4-1. Then Thursday night St. X shutout J-town 5-0.

IMVHO if these two teams played ten (10) games St. X would win 9 of 10.

BirdieCat, I totally agree with you. On that night, Manual looked like the better team. However, that may have been the worst game I have seen X play all year and Manual had one big inning (that should or should not have ended with that play at the plate). Overall, I say X is the better team. The next night X still looked a little rough against Desales, but still managed to pull out the win. Thursday night X beat a J-town team that had beat Manual on Wednesday. The thing is, that on Thursday night X put a line up on the field that was probably not their strongest. They had several kids sitting the bench that normally start and many of the starters that played were in different positions. With the exception of 2 kids, everyone on X's roster played against J-town. Against J-town, X's bats finally started to come back alive after a bumpy week. I think if X puts their 9 best on the field and starts to swing the bats like they are capable of doing, they could be a very scary team to deal with at the end of the year.

When St. X hits the ball and the pitchers are on, they've battled everyone that they've played. The risk in trying to evaluate Manual, I believe, is that there's a big drop off when you go beyond their first two pitchers.
