  1. Schnellenberger did play there. There were plenty of guys there that were great players Sherril Sipes one you may not have heard of. Bear Bryant offered all seniors scholarships the year Hornung and Sipes were seniors if the two of them would commit, I think that was '53 or '54 I didn't come along til later. Urban sprawl and the population migration to the suburbs doomed Flaget which located in Louisville's West End. Paulie Miller was one of the best HS coaches EVER and Flaget was a dominate force even after he was gone and the school had to go coed just to stay open, football was tops til the day the doors closed.
  2. He was actually only ineligible for a week or so, he had suffered some sort of hand injury and a lengthy illness (pnuemonia I believe) and chose to forego the rest of basketball season in order to work on academics and gaining weight. . He had not even originally intended to play basketball and only did so after the bball coaches hounded him, That is directly from his own mouth no rumor or hearsay. He is in the weight room after school everyday. I don't think your allowed to participate in conditioning if your actively ineligible. Last update I heard put him at 6'5" 170lbs. If he left to go anywhere he would go back to Trinity and have to sit a year, I don't see him doing that the kid loves football too much. I have compared him to Anderson when talking to people many times he has the potential to be far better than Anderson however because he has a much better football "head" on his shoulders and a better "touch" and I think will end up having a much stronger arm.
  3. I admit I was wrong about the outcome of the game I thought Male would walk away with this one. They both played as expected.
  4. Bryan Station is at Fern Creek in Louisville tonight. Starts at 6pm.
  5. The article mentions less than 1% of them. Most recently a kid named Neil at St X watch for him in the next couple years and the Hynes kid at Fern Creek. He also runs a mean jet sweep...
  6. Jim Baird is one of the greatest men I have ever had the pleasure of coaching with or against and has had some of the best talent to ever come out of Jefferson County come through his youth teams. http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061115/COLUMNISTS02/611150613/1002/SPORTS
  7. Neyland was a scary but witty guy. I remember one sports writer saying when I was in High School that the UT team was joined together by love for, respect for and a healthy dose of fear of, the General. I always thought Neyland said that first and others just picked up on it but that is just my memory of how things went.
  8. Let me just say if I am wrong in my prediction (Male wins this one) I will be here on Saturday, Monday at the latest admitting I was wrong. How many of you can say the same thing? I really have no dog in this fight, I have kids I either coached or coached against in the lower ranks on both teams Friday night.
  9. Without a doubt no matter what the outcome this will be the best game of the year in 4A..... Male needs to get it done this year too, regardless of what their supporters say, they are in store for a couple of lean years. Their 6A district draw does help them out NEXT year though as far as making the playoffs however Southern and Fern Creek both look to return a lot of their starters from this season and by the 08-09 season should be powerhouses both schools have growing enrollments and I look for both programs to improve dramatically sadly the thing I think hurting both those programs is coaching. The young talent is there.
  10. Hey now I one upped you on that I said last Thursday if Male beat X they would win the title. There is no one left in the state that can beat Trinity or Male one of them will knock the other off, personally I think Male will knock Trinity off. Then we can all look forward to NEXT year when we have a bizzillion teams in the playoffs and all this will seem like the good old days!
  11. Trinity can pass but so can Male, Gainey is deceiving his completion rate is near 70% and after 11 games he had thrown for MORE yards than Petrino. Redman is in the drivers seat on this one he has both in his arsenal a running game and a passing game, watch for Gainey to throw more than usual against the Rocks, why? Because soft pass defense is Trinity's biggest weakness. I watched Trinity give up 380yards passing yards when they played FC. Fern Creek has a horrible defense Trinity put up 51 pts but FC also had 3 very uncontested TD's through the air..Male has a defense, Male has a running game Male also has a QB that can throw, scramble and run and not too many receivers miss catches when they are not covered. The Rocks have their hands full in this one, the D will have to shift all night. Look for Josh Williams to be a factor in this one. This won't be like playing X where you know they are going to run 95% of the time.
  12. The word I got (from my nephew BIL one is a coach the other voted to the team) was the voting went like this for the All-District QB spot not 100% certain if this was official or not.. Matthews- 9 GAMES 309ATTEMPTS 169 COMP(55%)11 INT 2698YRDS 33 TD Petrino- 11 GAMES 168 ATTEMPTS 112 COMP (67%) 3 INT1847 YRDS 26 TD Ferguson- 9 GAMES 145 ATTEMPTS 78 COMP (54%)9 INT 1070 YRDS 8 TD Hynes- 9 GAMES 238 ATTEMPTS 120 COMP (50%)13 INT 1788 YRDS 15 TD Interesting to note, Ferguson also had over 1000 yards rushing any school with a descent QB and he is a RB instead. In average yards per game the Hynes kid led all schools in Jefferson County. In my opinion two of the four top QB's in the district 2 have a legit shot at playing D 1 and that is Matthews and Hynes. Both are over 6ft, both have tremendous arms, both like to stand in the pocket and throw but can be mobile if they need to be and neither is a Senior. Mathews was a Junior and Hynes a Freshman. Petrino is listed at 5'9 however I have always felt that is a bit of a stretch. He will make a great D2 QB some where. Ferguson as I said will make someone a nice little running back.
  13. Male has a better set of options to keep the Trinity D shifting. St X as always just runs it down your throat. The FC kid had 50+ attempts against Trinity Zoeller only has what 70 attempts all season???. X has rushed for 2600+ yards and passed for less than 1000. Male has rushed for about 2400 but has also passed for about 1800 or so. St X is not going to pass the ball alot because its not an option for them, which now that I think about it might be why Trinity is not that grand at defending the pass. Male on the other hand has it as an option and a fairly reliable one.
  14. I was thinking they had an "All County Team" that played another team selected from out in the state though. The All district teams have members from outside Jefferson County, ie Shelby County's QB was selected, or so I have heard.
  15. I must be the only old guy on here. This would be my ALL TIME ALL STATE PICKS. QB:Tim Couch QB:Brian Brohm WR:Mario Urrutia WR:Mike Bush RB: Derek Homer RB: Monquantae Gibson TE:Montrell Jones K: Shaun Payne Defense: 1967 Flaget Braves I think they only gave up like 39pts in 12 games and had a heck of a schedule. Also I was pretty sure Redman had Montrell at TE not RB, could be wrong though.
  16. If Male wins this game they take state. If X wins its a 50/50 shot as to whether X or Trinity wins it all.
  17. Did once upon a time long long ago they used to have an All County Team in Jefferson County?
  18. I agree in that is the biggest flaw Trinity has, soft pass defense. They gave up 380yards in the air to Fern Creek, Fern Creek has an exceptional young QB however not much of an o-line, so he got that 380 rolling out of the pocket. Same situation with a similiar QB who has a better supporting cast and coaching Trinity could find themselves in trouble. I think there is one team that could seriously hinder the Rocks bid to the ship and that is Male.. Redman doesn't go to the air as much as he COULD because he doesn't have to, but Gainy's completion rate is like 68% and he has a great o-line and is also mobil. Trinity could find their hands full with the Dawgs. Trinity stands a better chance against X in my opinion. I am excited to see how it pans out tonight and which will meet them next week (sorry Ballard fans didn't mean to totally overlook the fact Trinity has to beat you first, but I am a realist)
  19. you are correct 2nd round playoffs last year and then reg season @ Trinity this season.
  20. Could be he was only at Manual 12yrs so that would leave a gap FIL says it was his sophmore year but back then they had classes at the Catholic schools that graduated in half years or something crazy at least at Flaget and It was actually "Father O'Baer" that they called him. Another little bit you probably already know he was also a coach at the University of Louisville back in the day. My FIL said in HS Baer was probably actually just as good in basketball as football he just had a greater love for football.
  21. Honestly though some fields do not drain well enough to be safe. This morning in Jefferson County the optimist playoffs were canceled because the site, Iroquois, still had a foot of water on the field in some places, and grass on only about 65% . I am all for playing in the rain but on solid ground, sloppy mud and standing water will get kids hurt. I have seen too many hamstring, ankle and knee injuries over the years from kids slipping and struggling to maintain their balance on a field you could not even walk across let alone run on. I also saw a kid in the 60's get drilled and go face down in standing water, for about 20 seconds he was drowning. Fields are much better today but only at the better programs.
  22. Your red on blue looks good but I am not feeling the helmet with red on red...
  23. I would also have to say Trinity, I agree they look good against the turf. I have to comment on a college uniform however. I am an old-timer and last week when Louisville played Syracuse I commented to my son how much I liked the Syracuse Uniform. It reminded me of the old days.
  24. Here is a little trivia for ya IN 1946 he went over and took the coaching job at St X which was at the time remarkable considering he was Jewish, My father in law was playing at Flaget at the time and he said the St X players refered to him as "Father Baer".
