Aiding the runner is a 5 yd penalty from the spot of the foul. So, if the defense accepts the penalty then there would be an untimed down. If the defense declines the penalty, the result of the play would stand.

The enforcement would be from the spot of the foul and not the previous spot. That would mean that after the enforcement the result would be a first down. I could have done a better job wording the play.

Well, I didn't quite have the scenerio I wanted. I should have made the play 1st and 10 and that would have a few more people scratching their heads, I think. Everyone agrees with the penalty of illegal forward pass which is a 5 yd penalty and loss of down. The thing I thought most people would question was whether or not to extend the period for an untimed down since the penalty would most definately be accepted. It would have been a harder quiz if I had stated that it was 1st down instead of 4th. But anyway, as the rules state right now: Rule 3-3-3: A period must be extended by an untimed down if during the last timed down of the period, one of the following occurs: a. There was a foul by either team and the penalty is accepted, except for unsportsmanlike fouls, non-player fouls, and fouls that specify loss of down. b. There was a double foul c. There was an inadvertant whistle d. If a TD was scored, the try is attempted unless the TD is scored during the last timed down of the period and the points would not affect the outcome of the game or affect playoff qualifying. That is the rule right now but it has only been a rule since 2004. In 2003 during a very high profile playoff game in Pennslyvania a play very similiar to this determined the outcome of the game and thus led to the rule change. Before the change, if there was an accepted penalty then you must have an untimed down. During this play in Pennsylvania, the player was about to be tackled when he pitched the ball forward to a teammate. This teammate then ran in for the winning TD. The officials correctly called an illegal forward pass and a loss of down but the way the rules were written at that time the team who was penalized was given another opportunity with an untimed down. During this untimed down, the team scored on a legal forward pass and they won the game. I believe the team went on to win the state title in the upcoming weeks. The play led to the rule change which is the rule today. Just thought some of you football buffs might find that interesting.

Rule 7-5-4 : A forward pass, legal or illegal, is complete and the ball may be advanced when caught by any player of A or B.

If it was a fumble....yes but that's not the scenerio here. The penalty for illegal forward pass is 5 yds from the spot of the foul and loss of down.

I used to watch a broadcast on TV called "You make the call" and I used to enjoy trying to test my knowledge. So, I'm going to try it on Preps for a bit of fun. I will post the correct response after hearing everyone opinion. This play was discussed at a KHSAA rules clinic in 2005. With 00:05 seconds remaining in the game, Team A has the ball on Team B's 40 ydl with 4th down and 10. Team A's #22 runs to Team B's 10 ydl where he is hit. Before his knee touches the ground he pitches the ball forward to Team A's #25 at the 5ydl, who then runs the ball in the endzone for the touchdown with no time left on the clock. What will be the result of the play?

I don't think he was trying to take away any importance of the game but you have to admit that JV games usually don't get this much attention on Preps. I think that was all he was trying to say.

Just ask Coach McGlone, Coach Haywood, and Coach Jaggers. They have led the past 3 State Champs to titles using the smashmouth approach. Not to mention Russell beat O Cath in the title game who uses the Tony Franklin offense. Last year you had 2 running teams playing for the title. Many other high profile schools around the country run a smashmouth style including Colerain in Cincy.

If you don't blame the facemask penalty for the loss, you surely can not blame the onside kick. The Russell staff obviously thought there was a threat of a good return and hindsight is always 20/20. I personally feel as though the facemask penalty was more costly than the onside. The player didn't even need to touch the Simon Kenton player, he was trying to get out of bounds. He came up and made an unfortunate mistake that put Simon is position to win the game.

I don't think they'll be panicing in week 10 either. Sorry Blazer!!

I think he means knock Russell out of the playoffs if they play in the playoffs.

I don't think there is any chance of any playoff games being officiated by a 7 man crew. Without proper training in the mechanics of the 7 man system you could not implement it into the most important games of the year. Officials would need training and practice in order to work a 7 man crew. The only way you would be able to do it is to use the 7 man crew during the regular season, at least a few games. You would have to have game experience at the 7 man crew.

As far as the split crews go.. This is a method being tried out this year in our association. It is a method that is used in various associations across the state and used in some of the largest associations in the state. The split crews are being used in non-district games only. There are many different reasons why this method is being used. For one, officials are individually assigned from the 3rd week of the playoffs to the state championships and this method prepares officials for that transition. Another reason is obviously for mentoring. As a veteran official, I feel an obligation to officiating to help new and young officials who are starting out. It is very important to the future of area officiating that the new officials are mentored. With the split crew method many young officials are able to work with veterans who they may otherwise never get to work with. As far as the posts saying that it was obviously political......That couldn't be further from the truth. Bill Heaberlin has done an incredible job this year assigning for us. He has been as fair as anyone can be. Many people who have worked really hard over the years are finally being rewared for their years of dedication to officiating. All we ever asked for in an assignor was someone to be fair and someone to back us up when needed and Bill has done both. I think he's done a great job and I hope he stays for years to come.

This is a GREAT post!!!! A major reason why we are shorthanded on officials is because of the way we are treated. You have to have a deep love for this game to go out game after game and be screamed at like we are some caged animal. We have new people come out year after year and most don't last because of this reason, especially the young officials. It's a complete shame but it's the truth.

No, he did not resign. He has the position until April at least. If he decides to leave, which I hope he does not, it would not be until then. Bill has done a great job this year.

Tyler had a rushing TD but he didn't run much, maybe 2 or 3 times. He only saw limited action on defense.

As good as Russell's luck has been? What? I think Russell had the worst luck of anyone last year considering their star player went down with a season-ending injury in the districts.

Russell lost a key to this year's team when Seth Harvey went back to St. X. I think Ferguson will have to carry most of the scoring load for the Devils. If Micheal Mabery would gain some muscle and some confidence, he could be a very good HS player. He desparately needs weight and muscle. Other than that someone for the Devils will need to step up this year and contribute. You never know who may transfer in to Marv's Gym. LOL!!! You never know!!!

The chain are always opposite the pressbox by NFHS rules. Whether that be home or visitor. It is so that the pressbox and home side can see what the down and distance will be.

Bill Heaberlin is the new assigning secretary for the 16th region and he's done a fabulous job thus far. Dickey commented on the local association and badmouthed the officials for "hiring" Bill as our assigner. Dickey obviously has no idea of the way an assigner is hired. It has nothing to do with the local association. The association gives a recommendation to the Regional Policy Board. The recommending just started 2 years ago, before that started the officials had absolutely no influence. The Policy Board then hires who they want to assign varsity games in our region. The local officials and the local association has no vote or any say-so in the hiring. It would really be nice for Dickey to do his homework and know what he's talking about before he badmouths a whole group of people who give countless hours of their time so that he can come to Putnam and do his job and enjoy a HS football game.

OH YEAH, THAT WAS HILARIOUS. I saw it on the replay on TV. He was walking just fine, looked at the clock, and just went down and tried to get the officials attention. That was a classic flop.

I don't think it was the official because I know the official on his sideline and he has no ties to Russell at all and he's a very good official. He called the state championship 3A game last year.

Thanks for the listings.......... One thing I've noticed on the D-1A list, only a handful of kids from eastern KY are on that lists. That's a complete shame too because I know there has been some very good football players come from eastern KY over the past years. I truely believe that the kids from eastern KY are not given the respect they deserve from people across the state. Most people in the middle of the state feel like if you don't come from central Ky then you can't be D1 material. It's just a complete shame too because it's the kids who are the ones that suffer because of the prejudice. I thought with the recent success of Russell and Johnson Central on a statewide level that it may have shown the state that eastern KY boys can play. But yet the scholarship still aren't coming to eastern KY. If that hasn't changed the outlook, I'm not sure what will.
