It wouldn't ruin the experience of a state championship tournament. I like to Sweet 16 experience the way it is but that's not enough reason to keep it if it's unfair to the kids. That's probably the worst reason. The kids are the most important thing and not whether or not you and I have a good time at the tournament.

It was amazing. I'm not a Boyd fan but that shot was the biggest shot in regional history. I also remember in and I'll never forget, while the ball was in the air it seemed like an hour past by. Everyone in the gym was holding their breathe because of who took the shot because with Zornes you knew that anytime he shot it had a chance of going in. If anyone else had taken the shot, the Ashland faithful would had probably already started cheering when the ball left the fingers but since it was Zornes everyone just held their breathe. He was that good of a shooter that even from half court everyone thought, while unlikely, he could make it......And he did. I can only imagine the way the Ashland players, coaches, and fans felt. It almost seemed like a robbery had just taken place, like the championship had been stolen right out from under their noses. It was truely an unforgetable moment in regional tournament history.

What does that have to do with this? Just had to get that in, right?

The invitation sent to the players stated the game was to be in Lexington. It never said where in Lexing but I assume it's Commonwealth.

Every year for about 20 years. It's the only one like it around.

How come Ky is one of 2 states that have this such tourney? (They may be the only state now, not sure) Does the rest of the country have it all wrong? I hate the fact that the KHSAA chooses finances over student equality.

It happens once every 20 or 30 years. That's not too often. Sure, it's possible but highly, highly unlikely without some help.

The system in place now is unfair to the smaller schools who can't when a championship but once every 50 years. When Russell won the football state title last year, I got to see how exciting and how special winning a STATE championship is. And it didn't matter at all that there were 4 champs that year. Being a champion on their own level was enough, it was perfect. I think it would be good for KY basketball if more kids could experience something like that. For the kids to dream about it and to know that it is possible is worth it but then to actually experience winning a state title.........Man, the kids would remember it for the rest of their lives. I don't see how that could be a bad thing.

I would have liked to see Rose Hill play a bit of a stronger schedule. That would have been a great measuring stick to see just how good they are right now. I guess we'll find out next week.

I would love to see a classification in basketball in KY. I would give kids a better chance of winning a state title. Now, it's nothing but a unreachable dream for almost every school in the state. Kids don't even think it's possible nor do they ever mention it because to them it's just unontainable. And I would agree. The days of a good ole' boys leading a school of 100 farming kids are over. I just don't think it's a possibility anymore, nor do the kids themself. I'd love for that dream to be a reality again. For the kids to actually believe that it's possible and to dream about it again. It seems as though the KHSAA wants the same thing in every other sport besides basketball. I guess people love the rarity of the Sweet 16 tournament enough to keep it. Personally, I'd love to see a classification in basketball in KY, it would be good for the kids and that's what matters the most and not what the adults like or dislike.

He's had more than that in his career but the 3 straight is pretty impressive with the fact that there was some pretty good teams during those years in the 16th, including Ashland having a couple very solid squads. Ashland should have won 1 or those regional titles but had it taken away when Tyler Zornes hit a half court shot to beat them. That was a tremendous game and no doubt one of the best in regional tourney history.

Breedan was the coach of that 96' team and nobody thought they would advance to the finals.

Great post! I thought the game would be decided on the boards and who got more 2nd chance points. I'd like to know exactly how many 2nd chance points Russell had. It seemed as though alot.

I think Boyd would be right there also. Zornes had a few regional championships also.

Oh, You're Russell Hater sign shines again!!!!! Truely, I don't even want to hear about transfer from an Ashland faithful. I'm not going to get into that conversation though. Everyone except Robinson started their HS career at Russell. Nobody said Russell's basketball tradition was better than Ashland's, Nor was anyone talking about who was the "DOMINENT" program. We were talking about this season and this season only and you brought up the regional championship last year. Whether you like it or not(and I'd say not), Russell is a dominent player in the region THIS year. Comments like yours above is what give Ashland fans a bad rep and it's sad because not all of their fans are like that but there are a select few who think "Ashland is SOOO much better than everyone else. ASHLAND IS UP HERE.....and everyone else is down here" . They're not any better or any worst than school is this region. So please, give me a break with the "Holy'er than thou" attitude. About last year, you have to get to Rupp before you can win at Rupp. Graves County would have beaten any team in the region last year. And as for Ashland "always looking for a shot at the state title". I hope you were kinding, right? In 1996, Ashland was Cinderella. They weren't supposed to get to the finals. They played a couple good games and got a little lucky with how the tourney played out.

I don't know how different they could be, a week isn't too much time. I don't think they'd want to be too different. They're a very good basketball team as they are.
