UKCATSFAN Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Just wanted to hear some first-hand experience of one of the biggest shots in 16th Region history. Any thoughts on this amazing game and the game-winning shot?
kele_okereke Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Ashland's Zack Davis hit a buzzer beater against Russell about 4 years ago in the region semi-finals!
MBWC41 Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 I remember this game like it was yersterday. I was setting in the student section. I think Derrick Cooksey had just hit a 3 with like 4 seconds left in the game to put Ashland up by 2. Zornes got the inbounds pass, sliced through a few defenders and threw up the running floater. I dont even think he was set when he took the shot. The place went nuts. I didnt think he was going to make it up the floor with the ball none the less hit the prayer.

I'm not a Boyd fan but that shot was the biggest shot in regional history. I also remember in and I'll never forget, while the ball was in the air it seemed like an hour past by. Everyone in the gym was holding their breathe because of who took the shot because with Zornes you knew that anytime he shot it had a chance of going in. If anyone else had taken the shot, the Ashland faithful would had probably already started cheering when the ball left the fingers but since it was Zornes everyone just held their breathe. He was that good of a shooter that even from half court everyone thought, while unlikely, he could make it......And he did. I can only imagine the way the Ashland players, coaches, and fans felt. It almost seemed like a robbery had just taken place, like the championship had been stolen right out from under their noses. It was truely an unforgetable moment in regional tournament history.
Big Bubba Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Ty was great but his dad was even better. He has proven that he is a great coach no matter where he is at. He did a great job of coaching his own son, must have been hard at times. His dad was a star at Catlettsburg High School and Kentucky Weslyan College, probably would have played in the pros if he didnt blow his knee out.

WSAZ still uses that shot in a clip for a commercial about WSAZ sports I believe.
kcufootball Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 What is Tyler Zornes doing now? Did he play college ball?
IBleedMaroon Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Played for one year somewhere in Florida and then followed one of those assistants out west to I thing Oregon, Ashland Daily ran a short article about his move a few years ago...But correct me if I'm wrong...
ACE Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I was there sitting directly behind one of the goals. I believe Scott Johnson may have been the Ashland player to hit the three. When the final play set up, Zornes was on the far end left side of the court and sprinted toward my end, caught the ball on the dead run and circled up the right side, crossed over to the top of the key and nailed it. I had a great view. One of the best plays to end a game I have ever witnessed. (I must say TZ wasn't very classy after the ball went in though).

I dont think anyone ever tried to project TZ as a "classy guy". He was a good ball player, he knew how good he was and he sure didnt mind letting other people know about it ! He had a lot of errogance about himself. He definatley left it all on the floor every game though, a very hard nosed player. In my opinion he stratled the line of confidence and cockiness very closely. I unfortunately did not get to see the way he acted after the shot, I was too busy storming the court in celebration. A little off topic, but someone mentioned how good his dad Roger was. I'd like to hear more about this...was he as good as Pratt ?
BigDawgOnCampus Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Where exactly is Tyler in basketball now? Anyone know actual facts of what he is doing now?
