Having hammers like Hentz and putting up a big block certainly helps and are crowd pleasers. However, playing "in system" and having superior ball control is usually the difference when teams are pretty evenly matched.

NCC still playing without their libero?

I believe NewCath has used Newport's Stadium for about 45 years for their home games. So I imagine that is "whatever stadium" that would have been the site for this game. I wonder if the new turf is not ready for play just yet.

Comments like this make me think some fans are missing the "Big Picture".

They don't play because Notre Dame quit scheduling local teams (other than who they are required to play plus St. Henry) in order to play more Cincinnati and Louisville teams. NCC & Highlands routinely have teams that beat ND in soccer, basketball and softball making them "worthy" of being on the ND schedule in those sports. However, ND doesn't think that is the case for volleyball.

This is a big game! Both teams have renewed expectations this season and week 0 can be an indicator of what lies ahead. Dayton and Brossart both likely look at this game as a probable "W" on their schedule and you hate to miss an opportunity right out of the gate. I don't know enough about either to offer a prediction but close games can be decided by turnovers, penalties and miscues. If those are somewhat equal, I would expect it to be won or lost on the offensive / defensive lines.

UK#1fan has been very generous this pre-season with his compliments of players from other teams. I agree with him that Lloyd has some very strong offensive skill players this season. Both Durham and Townsend have good speed and run very hard. Gaines is a load and can cause huge problems if the QB can get him the ball.

I don't see Holmes on their schedule this season. You aren't required to play all the teams in your district but take it as a loss for district seeding if you choose not to play. It doesn't matter what seed Notre Dame gets for the district tournament. It's always been more important to play quality opponents rather than worry about their district seed.

Looks like 41 players with only 5 seniors. Those numbers are pretty good and with 19 juniors, it bodes well for next year.

So why do you think Notre Dame plays Simon Kenton, Dixie, Conner, Boone County and, up until 2 years ago, Holmes every year? Yes, there is a conference with three divisions, standings and plaques to the winners and everything! The conference also hosts an awards banquet at the end of the year to honor players and coaches of the year. I imagine they play in basketball because ND doesn't feel the need to play as many Cincinnati and Louisville teams in basketball leaving some space on the schedule for local teams.

It's neither Highlands nor NCC that won't schedule Notre Dame, it's the other way around. Notre Dame is required to play both Scott and Campbell County for the conference.

Reading the notes on this thread, I find that many teams "disliked" are not attributed to rivalries as much as the fans, or perceived attitude, of a particular program. I probably think along the same way. When a team's fan base shows a lack of respect for an opponent, or a team cheats, I tend to smile when they lose. I don't hate on a team because of their success, especially if they handle that success respectfully. Prime examples would be Highlands and Mayfield. For the most part they just win and keep their mouths shut. They have earned their success but don't taunt others with it. I do wish CovCath and Beechwood would have had more recent success against HHS and Mayfield in order to improve the rivalry.

In a perfect world, students would be free to go to the school they thought was the best fit for them. In a perfect world, diocesan high schools wouldn't act like they own the "rights" to students just because they attend a particular grade school. In a perfect world, high schools would try to become a better option to attract students rather than crying foul when they go elsewhere.......in a perfect world.

I saw one called last year that I just didn't understand what was expected of the defensive back. Receiver jumps along sideline to attempt a catch (defenseless) and the safety put shoulder right on receiver's chest to break up the catch. It was violent, without question but below shoulders and not with the helmet. Obviously, most violations are judgment calls and open to the officials' interpretations, but I wanted to see if the high school rule was more restrictive than the college/pro version.

Who can help me understand the "Targeting" foul as it relates to high school football? Is it only for contact shoulders and above on defenseless players? I've seen it called on hits to the mid-section of receivers and really don't understand what defenders can and can't do. I would assume it would also apply to offensive players on a "peel back" block?

2000 more? Will the move back to 1A, and a weak district be enough for Brossart football to survive? Will Simon Kenton beat Highlands? Will any NKY team this year? What will Holmes be like?

Do they return a starting QB? I am not very familiar with their personnel other than what I have read. Their backfield appears to be stout and have good size on the line.

Alright I'll start with a list: Can Highlands maintain their NKY dominance when it appears their returning cast is not far superior to the rest of the region? Is it the Highlands machine that keeps them rolling or have they just been blessed with the best talent for 10 years straight? Will the changes at CovCath be what was needed to close the gap with the Bluebirds? Will their tough schedule pay dividends or spell doom for the season? Has Simon Kenton established themselves as a "elite type" program that can challenge for NKY supremacy? Having Highlands on their schedule will certainly go a long way in helping decide this. Dixie had a very strong senior class last year that led them to the 6A title game. Have they been decimated by graduation or do they maintain their success? Scott? Are they here? Have they finally climbed the hill and can put a couple good seasons together, maybe win the region? Is Beechwood back to the 1A juggernaut now that Mayfield has vacated their throne? Is it back to the days of old with 4, 5 or 6 championships in a row? How good is Ryle's QB, how good is Holy Cross' backfield, can Lloyd tackle anyone, can Newport overcome their tumultuous off season???? Who is this year's darkhorse?
