Actually, Beechwood's enrollment is about 50 students higher than NCC. NCC has higher male enrollment while Beechwood has higher female enrollment. I understand that Beechwood has a higher male enrollment currently in the middle school. NCC, Newport and Holy Cross are all within 10 male students of each other on the last enrollment stats. If Beechwood would move up, it would likely be one of these three schools moving down to 1A.

Am I the only one that sees Lloyd winning this by a wide margin? I'd love for this to be a really competitive game. I'd like to believe that both Districts can compete for the regional championships each year, but I don't think Walton is there this year. I'll take the Juggs 35 - 14.

No matter how it is disguised, it comes down to the same thing....."Play my kid more!". Fans that are supportive of the coach and program don't get on here and second guess their decisions, to any degree. That's the bottom line.

I'm not sure that Schreiver was an All-American but I know she set for NKU back when they were D2. She certainly would have experience to help the high school setters.

NCC was missing a starting defensive back against both HC and Lloyd. His return will make a difference in both pass coverage and run support.

You appear to be a little defensive of the schedule Beechwood has played. First of all, I said they did what they should have with that schedule so they have taken care of business. And while NCC has played a stronger schedule, they have failed to capitalize on their opportunities. But to your question of a what I mean by a "less than impressive schedule", I'll answer this way. I agree that the 2A district is typically pretty soft, so why does that make up your non-conference schedule? Somerset isn't any good this year and was 0-10 last year. Ironton isn't the team you'd like to make them out to be either. Max Preps ranks them 271st in Ohio. The only really good team the R&W Tigers played this year is CovCath and they got waxed. Now before you get your shorts in a bunch, I will say again, Beechwood has done more with their schedule than NCC has done with theirs. I also didn't say it would be a close game because of the schedule Beechwood has played. What I said was, I think these two teams will be better matched than people are expecting. That is why each team plays this game just prior to the playoffs.

I'm not convinced that these two teams are so far apart talent-wise. Other than CovCath, Beechwood's schedule is not super impressive. They have beaten the teams that should have but have not played a strong schedule. NCC on the other hand has played a very challenging schedule but really hasn't done much with it. They've beaten who they should have (most not as convincingly as you would expect) but have had opportunities to beat larger schools and come up short. I think this could be more of a challenge for Beechwood than expected. They will have to punt, they will get pushed around some on the line, they will have some pressure on the QB and they've had none of that since the middle of September. This is a great game for each team in preparation for the playoff run. But I get the feeling that the results are honestly more important to other areas in the state than it is to Beechwood and NCC. The rest of the state uses it to gauge the strength of 1A and 2A in NKY. I get the feeling that Paintsville and Danville will be watching the outcome closely.

I've seen Brossart's setter play this year and was impressed. She has very good hands and upper body strength. She is quick, gets her feet in position consistently and has a nice jump set when the pass allows. Her size may keep her from playing at the highest level but she certainly has the skills to advance if she so chooses. I'm curious to hear what her options are.

No surprises in the first round as the 4 district champs advance. Notre Dame v St. Henry and Cooper v NCC in the semis. Earlier this month Notre Dame beat St. Henry 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-15) and Cooper downed NCC 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18)

It wasn't that long ago that the East had all the contenders and state finals were 42 - 0. It changes from year to year.

Clyde, here's another rules question for you. We all seem more familiar with the rules used on TV on Sundays but aren't quite so familiar with those for Friday nights. On NewCath's last drive, with about 1:30 left in the game, they had a 3rd and about 3 or 4 yards at about the Holy Cross 30 yard line. As they break the huddle, HC sends in a personnel change for one of the D lineman. NewCath rushed to the line, checked to be sure they were set, and quickly snapped the ball while the player was still leaving the field. He was coming to the sideline right in front of the official on the HC sideline and was clearly 5 or more yards on the field when the ball was snapped. There was no penalty called and NCC took a 6 or 7 yard loss on the play. The NCC QB clearly called the snap quickly to catch the player still on the field (and offsides). A penalty results in a 1st down, ending the game because the Indians were out of timeouts. Are the rules different regarding this or did the official just turn a "blind eye"? I'm kind of surprised no one else mentioned this one.

Same players with same uncalled for penalties. Lack of discipline or lack of character?

Because NCC defends the run very well and HC does not. NCC wants to run and will be able to. HC will not be able to stay close by running and will need to throw. Scott does a nice job scrambling but will be under significant pressure all night.

Why not reward half of the semi-finalists with a home game? I think crowds are larger with the current format than they would be making both teams travel. I think the costs would be a much greater deterrent than we can truly consider. Travel costs, venue costs, loss of ticket revenue, loss of concessions, likely smaller crowds than current system, etc. To clarify, what is the biggest problem we're trying to correct? The fact that one team gets a home game in the semi-final? I'm not convinced that is a problem worth curing.

There is no accurate rating system that would allow for seeding of playoff games. For the most part, throughout the season, the east teams play the east teams while the west play the west. There is very little in common with the regular season schedule and the rankings are way too skewed to W/L record. Quite often, we get a team that is ranked low because they are 6-4 and it turns out that they are much better than uninformed opinions think. I like the system the way it is. It's an honor to host a semi-final game and it allows some more casual fans an opportunity to attend. If my team isn't in the semi-final game, I'll go to one that is hosted in the area. But I wouldn't travel to watch another local team play.

I'd be really surprised if HC is within 20 points in this game.
