Ryle 3 Newport Central Catholic 2 (25-13, 25-15, 24-26, 23-25, 15-11)

Featured Replies

Well the folks that attended this one got their monies worth.....and then some. When it looked like it was going to be a quick 1,2,3 evening for Ryle, the Breds dug down deep and almost pulled off the upset.

Game 1 - This one started out "nip 'n tuck" at 5-5. Ryle goes on a 9-0 run to go up 14-5, before the Breds score 4 straight to pull within 7, at 15-8. Ryle goes on another run, this time 8-0, to go up 23-8, before NewCath puts up 5 more......however the Raiders get the next 2 to win 25-13.

Game 2 - This one started out with Ryle taking a quick 7-3 advantage, but the Breds score the next 5 to go up 8-7. From there it's again, "nip 'n tuck" to 13-13. Then the Raiders go on a 10-0 run to make it 23-13, and the two teams trade points till the final is 25-15.

Now the fun begins.........

Game 3 - NewCath is down 5-2, but go on a 4-0 run, to go up 6-5. Then something I've never seen in volleyball....a YELLOW CARD!!!!!, thought this was only in soccer....still don't know why it was called. :idunno: Anyway, back to the action......NewCath goes up 4 two different times at, 12-8 & 14-10, they then stretch that lead to 17-11, before Ryle responds at goes out in front at 19-18. NewCath goes up 22-21, but Ryle doesn't go away, and takes a 24-23 lead with the serve. The Breds catch a huge break as Ryle commits the service failure, and were tied at 24's. The Breds then get the next 2 pts. to win 26-24.

Game 4 - Breds start off up 2, but then find themselves down 2, at 4-2. NewCath ties it up at 6-6, and the takes a small 11-10 lead. Raiders go up 14-11, but NewCath gets back on top at 17-15. It looks like the Breds have this one in the bag up 20-16, with the serve, but then a NewCath service failure....and before you know it's all of a sudden 21-20 Breds. NewCath gets a quick 3-0 run to go up 24-20, before the Raiders pull within 1 at, 24-23. NewCath gets the final point, on a block at the net for the 25-23 victory.

Game 5 - Raiders start off hot up 4-0. NewCath responds with their own 4-0 run, and we're knotted at 4's. Breds are up 7-5, 9-6, & 10-8, before the Raiders take the lead for good at 11-10, and go on for the final tally of 15-11.

Thanks to both teams for a very entertaining evening. :thumb:

BTW, can someone out there tell me why they put the Ryle Student Section RIGHT IN FRONT of the visitors section? :isurrender: The NewCath parents had to stand to see the 1st game before the issue was somewhat addressed.

It was Senior Night and there was a VERY healthy parent and student section (maybe 100+ strong from the students) from Ryle. Why not pull out the stands on the other side of the gym ? :idunno:

Who got the yellow card?

Who got the yellow card?

Ryle.......I think a coach??? threw a clipboard.....I don't know. No PA guy to explain the final call.

At least the PA guy at NewCath would have told the crowd what happened. ;)

They don't "put" the student section there....the kids choose to be there. Every Ryle game that i have seen (home or away) the student section is large, very loud and they strategically place themselves in the bleachers!! It works and gets the Ryle girls fired up!

Sounds like a great match!

That section was cordoned off specifically for the Ryle students.

I heard it was because of the student section so they carded the Ryle team. Something about yelling at the NCC servers and calling them by name. Idk why Ryle would get punished for their student section, which they don't control, but from what I heard that was the reasoning to the card.

I do recall hearing the NewCath girls 1st names being called......thanks.

BTW, I agree with you, that shouldn't go against Ryle even if it was their student section.

I'm guessing it was for senior night. But regardless, with the yellow card on the student section they may re-think their strategy. They are without a doubt one of the biggest student sections for volleyball and they do a great job of supporting their volleyball team. May get a little feisty at times but they are normally a lot of fun to watch too!

It is the home team's coaches and school administration's job to see that their student section is not disruptive . Yelling at the visiting teams server trying to distract her is poor sportsmanship and distracting . If no attempt was made to stop this then the issuing of a yellow card was correct .

I know every kid is different, but when my daughter played against Ryle and the kids called her name or celebrated her mistakes she loved it. It fueled a desire to shut them up with better play. :) LOL

Just curious, because I don't know volleyball at all---how is this different than "heckling" a basketball player at the free throw line?

BTW - I just had to point this out. It looks like math on the hill ain't so grand either. lol

Volleyball isn't golf. Make as much noise as you want when someone is serving. Happens everywhere. yell, scream, stomp, there's no rule against that and it's just like someone shooting a free throw - not bad sportsmanship at all in my book.

Yellow cards are up to the officials. It's a judgement call, and everyone is different. Did fans cross the line when yelling specific names and/or directing their cheering at one player vs cheering/chanting in general? Not in my book, as long as it was "clean" - but maybe in yours.

I get how teams would be penalized for their fans. That happens everywhere in every sport. But were they warned first? I think everyone deserves a warning first before the cards come out.

And yes, volleyball has both yellow and red cards for players, coaches, fans.
