I agree with you. Highlands had a very tough schedule. It was a shocker when they lost in the playoffs. How many seniors were on the team this year?

I heard Todd County ran it some this year early in the season and I know that Pikeville ran it some this year against Somerset late in the game in the playoffs. The kids were very confused all saying what kind of offense is that? We told them it was the "single wing" (1940's Knute Rockne offense) and they just laughed. I thought football had come a long way since the 1940's but I guess some still use it. It is a very strange offense to look at and it limits you quite a bit in what you can do. As far as the wing T there are many teams in KY that use that offense. I also know a coach down in Georgia that won a state championship a few years ago running the wing T. It can be a good offense but if the defense is very disciplined in their keys it will be shut down quickly.

I know a lot of good coaches that if given his talent year in, year out would do more with it. Being a good coach is doing something outstanding and until this year he hasn't done anything amazing. I also heard that the QB for Lex Cath is calling the plays on the offense so maybe it is a just a very talented kid making him look good. Maybe he should hope to be so lucky again next year.

Just to remind you that Somerset has only been in the "mountains" for 3 years. Somerset was in the west side before that. The last time Somerset played NCC they won. It was a long time ago but they haven't played since then and that was in the semi-finals of the state.

You must be a Coach Sphires followers... Maybe you should look at how good he did at Knott Co. while he was there. Actually don't do that because that might upset you. A good coach takes his players and schemes around them to beat teams with more talent than them. I honestly don't feel that he has done that because he couldn't win at Knott Co. and he only wins now when he has an overwhelming amount of talent than the other side. Now that being said, his team might win state this year. But like others have mentioned before, he should have already won a couple with as much talent as he has had in the past. (or at least a region) I don't slam coaches but I simply said that he wasn't worthy of being mentioned with some of the other coaches on this thread. Other coaches around the state don't deal with 5-10 D1 athletes per year and still not win a state title. :sssh:

I drove by this field the other day after the first round of the playoffs and this field looked terrible. I guess it is their choice but I think I would have chosen a nicer facility. Especially since they can't fit a big crowd in there.

Wow, why would they hold a Semi-finals game on such a torn up field?

the numbers were just for fun. I think they are pretty even and I'd say that they had the same amount of blowout games.

This was a very sloppy game. LOTS of penalties in this one. Somerset had 16 penalties on the night and Paintsville had 6 for a combined total of 22 penalties. The sad thing is that most of the calls were phantom calls where they would throw holding when nobody was even blocking. But the boys from both teams faced this adversity well and played hard. Somerset's offense had the worst night of the year by far, but as they say "Defense wins championships." Paintsville's boys were very good sports and I saw a lot of one team helping the other team off of the pile and so on. You guys have a class program! BTW is number 5 from Paintsville getting any looks from colleges because I think he would make someone a great Tight End. Now on to NCC!

I think Owensboro Catholic will win this game. They really stepped up well tonight and downed a team that was touted as one of the best around. The coaching staff there is really good and they will have their boys ready to play.

I think the letters are also good motivators to the players. I know if I received a letter from a big D1 school I would have been fired up and ready to show my stuff to send a tape. Somerset's coach gives the letters to the athletes as soon as he receives them and even puts together films to send to the colleges of the players choice. A player should never be deprived of a chance to go to college and play football.

Normally job openings such as this go to insiders. Almost always it is one of the assistants that get the job. This is a very good job though I am sure that a lot of coaches aroung the state and maybe even the border states are interested.

I'm sure Somerset would much rather have him throw the ball than run it. I say this for two reasons. 1)This is not Paintsville's style of offense 2)Pugh's arm strength is questionable (that is the word on the street) I wasn't putting the kid down by saying he couldn't get it done throwing the ball but I will say this; if he has to throw the ball it will extend the game and be a very long night for the Tigers. I've seen the Evarts game and I wasn't much impressed with the passing game. (the difference in that game was speed; it's as simple as that) That being said, Good luck to both teams tonight and everyone have a safe trip over to Somerset! :thumb:

Personally I think the basketball in KY needs classes as well but I am realistic enough to know that this won't happen because of the money and fan support that the Sweet 16 generates. Fans seem to love the sweet 16, although the reality of it is that the teams don't have an equal shot because of the number of kids in the schools. As far as the 6 classes in football, I think it would be hard to set up with geographic boundaries. The travel time is pretty hefty as it is. If the teams were split up even more then they would increase travel times by quite a bit.

Because in high school it is about the kids and their experience. This is not the same at the other levels. Why would anyone in their right mind turn away a kid that wanted to play football? IMO football is a great character building sport. The reasons in basketball are because you can't fit 60 kids on the side of the court. Also only 5 play at a time...

I would love to see this outcome. Although, Somerset would have to play a flawless game. Somerset is very good this year but I have a lot of respect for Paintsville as well. Paintsville is a very good just like all of the teams that have made it this far. Good teams are hard to blowout. The only way I see the game getting ugly like this is if the defense shuts down the run and Paintsville is forced to pass the ball. It is good to see such optimism though. :thumb:

The cold weather tends to hurt the away teams because they get off the warm bus to go on the cold field. But yes the cold weather might be a factor if Somerset lets it be.

Congrats on a great season Southwestern! Now I hope to see you all out supporting the Jumpers in the regional final next week!
