  1. Newport over Sharp tonight in all three games.
  2. Newport has a nice helmet in which they brought back the old cats emblem that they once wore in the late 70's and early 80's. I believe it was assistant coach Salter that got the Cats to bring it back. It was actually worn on the University of Kentucky helmets for a while. The helmet is black with a black face mask and I believe the stripes are red in the center with two red on the out side. The Cats emblem is red with a white outline. What makes it stand out is the cat's claw the scratches a "C" and tails at the end of it. If anyone can find one post it - I will try to find one.
  3. Newport's biggest problem IMO already is that the majority of the players do not take the weight serious. Yes, IMO and from what I have seen the players are not as serious with the weight room that they should be and basically that goes for all the sports there. IMO - Nick Rice would be number one in my book to build a more serious program for Newport. Brossart - forget him - IMO he is not the right fit for Newport. Coleman would be good but I just don't see him coming there. NHS Big Daddy is right - they should have already have been lifting, in fact they should have been in the weight room a few weeks after the season. Face it, the senior class that is leaving had a lot of talent and didn't produce. Why? No one actually knows. Newport will have a descent back field this year with Short and McDay carrying the ball. Collins also adds a punch as a running QB. If you bring someone like Nick Rice into the program you will add a motivator which the program needs. Does anyone know Newport's schedule this coming season? I've heard that it has been changed and that they have picked a lot of 1A schools.
  4. I am going to miss the hard play of Willie Price from Newport. Price was the safety for Newport and was one of the top tacklers for Newport. IMO - Newport should have used him as a linebacker.
  5. Holmes needs t come out strong and make a statement in this one. The districts are around the corner and they haven't played like the team they are. I'll say Holmes wins by 16 in this one.
  6. Connor played with the NFF from starters through seniors. Guidguli played one year - last year of seniors the rest of the time he played for the FTJFL.
  7. Newport will finish out the regular season Tuesday night against Sharp Middle school.
  8. I don't recall if he agreed or not to be banded but IMO I don't believe it would have help anyway if he would have come clean in the beginning. IMO the problem is these guys - all of them - are somewhat role models to the public and they should be held to higher standards in life. Just like the public wants to look at police officers. It makes me ill to hear that a professional athlete does something wrong and the first thing you hear is the "treatment" word.
  9. I still have yet to figure how MLB continues to let players that violate drug use seek treatment and then let them come back into the league. Yet Pete Rose gambled on baseball and was banned. Why was he not offered the change for treatment and once completed allowed to come back into the league. Overall, IMO, its okay to drugs as long as you seek help afterwards and admit your addictions - then the professional leagues extend their hand to you because they feel as though they have saved you. Granted I understand the performance enhancement drugs are to assist a player with making them better but isn't there an addiction issue there as well. Rose was a gambler on a lot of issues - look at how he played - he wasn't afraid to gamble in every game in play in - he'd take a chance in the field and on the base. I myself wished half the players in professional sports would play as hard as he did. My overall is this, we now she high school and colleges having the same stand on drug use - admit your addiction and seek redemption and welcome back as long as you help our team to victory.
  10. Nice win for the Cats. Campbell County usually has a solid team but I believe this is an off year for them. I agree with gryche11 in the fact that Newport isn't one of the quickest teams this year. Darnell and McDaniels are not very fast but they do have good size and power under the rim. IMO I just don't see Newport knocking off Highlands in the districts this year. Highlands is too well coached, discipline and an overall rounded team. It seems to have been either Highlands or NewCath winning the districts for the past few years.
  11. Newport has 1 middle school that gives them the majority of their players. They also have a youth program Newport Fire Fighters. The NFF several years ago was a great feeder program for Newport but in recent years has become a bigger supplier for other schools like NewCath and Highlands.
  12. Newport's 6th & 8th grades over Campbell County last night. Newport's 7th grade takes the lost. Newport's 7th grade team lacks a point guard this year and basic leadership on the floor. They have a good coach that knows his stuff but you can do only so much as a coach. The 8th grade had their starters back and played a hard game unfortunately I had to miss this one - duty called again. The 7th grade has a very energetic coach that goes non stop during the game - good job Coach Hambrick. Newport has Sharp (PC) next tuesday on Newport's floor.
  13. Thanks gryche11, the 8th grade has been playing harder than in the beginning of the season. They had just three players on the bench to use for the game in reserve. Stull had to sit out the game because of the tech foul against HMS the other night. Stull could have helped put the game against St. Pius out of reach but when you mess up you have to pay the price. Garland got into foul trouble early and Sharp came into the game and produce some three's. I believe Sharp will see more action now. Baldwin had a good night of rebounding and blocking some shots too. Guilkey had a descent night and Pearson provided a lot of good shots. IMO they are at least one or two players away from having a solid starting five and a good bench to give the starting five a break. Next game is Thursday I believe against CC purple.
  14. At Newport this evening it was the 8th and 6th grades over St. Pius and the 7th grade loosing to St. Pius.
  15. My son is currently 14 years old and in the 8th grade in fact he turned 14 back in November anyway he had some AAU experience when he was back in the 3rd grade and I thought it was a god experience for him. He played on a team where he was 2 years younger than everyone else on his team. That was the last time he got to play AAU and just about every year since we have tried to find him a team to play on but no luck. Yet there has been some years that we gave up on finding him a team. My thought is that he getting ready to enter high school and I myself believe that if he were on a AAU team he could get more looks for a college. He has excellent grades so he's not just a jock he is a student athlete which I am very proud of him for this accomplishment. I guess what I am trying to say is that AAU IMO is a great program but hard for some kids to find a team. The web site IMO basically wants you - yourself - to start a team which would be great if a person had the time which I do not with my profession. I have my own baseball team and have been fortunate to have time to manage it but still I have not been able to give it 100% which I believe AAU basketball requires a 100% of a person's time. If anyone can help my son to find a team please let me know. He plays for Newport 8th grade at this time and usually plays the center position because of his height. He IMO has the skills and potential to be a good player and contribute to a team. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help with this - I know that gryche11 has been very supportive and my family really appreciate his support.
  16. Yeah unfortunately I had to work, I was going to stop by but I was worried that I would get a call. Everyone was texting me about the game and I heard what happen with Witte during the game. I hope that Witte is okay. I am glad that the Newport player did apologize afterwards. The kid from Newport is a good kid and plays hard all the time. Newport has improved a lot since the Christmas break so hopefully they will shock so teams in the playoffs.
  17. I heard it was a good game. Great comeback for the Birds - I really wished I could have seen this one - How did Newport look this time around?
  18. McDay from Newport will be a force next season - as a sophomore this season he saw a lot of action and has the skills to be one of the best Juniors in the area.
  19. Tucker played his heart out tonight - I was proud that he came out of this tournament with something. Good hard fought game and a good win for the Breds. Newport looked impressive with the Tucker, Darnell, Collins, McDaniels and Luther as the starting five but fell a little short - great effort.
  20. Good win for the Bulldogs. This was a game they needed to be involved in - they needed to play a more competitive team to keep them on their toes.
  21. This was indeed the game of the tournament overall so far. The bracket these two teams played had to be the toughest to be in. I must say that admire how Coach Faust used his bench - I believe that kept them in the game.
  22. If NewCath plays like they did against St. Henry then I'd say NewCath takes this one. Now, if Newport can remain focus and play their game then I'd go with Newport. However, every time I've watch Newport this season - they appear to get off to a great start and then they let teams get back in the game and then its a fight to the end. Darnell needs to stay around the boards tonight - too many times they place him on the outside which would be a bad choice against NewCath's big men. I was impressed with NewCath's big men against St. Henry - NewCath IMO is the type of team that gets better as the season goes on - this IMO is because of the waiting for the football players to get out of football mode and get into a basketball mode. Newport needs to keep Collins in this game more tonight - he is hard nosed and not afraid of getting knocked around under the hoop. Luther needs to get more involved under the hoop also - Luther could be a big plus if he stays under the hoop. Overall I say - take a coin to the game and toss it up - heads Newport tails NewCath - you call it towards the end and that will probably name the winner in this one. This game will come to the wire if both teams bring their A game.
  23. Thanks I appreciate it and I'm sure the boys do too. Sharp does take advantage of the home court - I've been going there for the past six years and nothing surprises me with the outcome of the games. I've seen visiting coaches get technical fouls for the strangest of things. Oh well, let's just hope for a good game. Sharp has had some talented players in the past and I'm sure they still have them. Newport's 8th grade has talent but lacks the bench support to give them that added punch. The 7th grade doesn't have a point guard capable of making things happen. Hayes (7th) is the best player the 7th grade has. The 6th grade has some talent and very well coached but look for Coach Hambrick to get a T tonight - he doesn't hold anything back - gotta appreciate that in a coach.
