Newport travels to Sharp tonight. Sharp is a hard place to play for a visiting team. The outcome should be interesting.

Great win for the Cats. I agree with NHS BIG DADDY - this Newport team makes you wonder which team will show up to play. I guess the better team was there tonight - now can they keep showing up for the rest of the ALL "A" Classic.

If Newport can show up and play like they did against NewCath then I have to go with Newport by 2. However, Newport has been up and down all season so in all reality it looks like Beechwood by 10.

Newport actually had eight on the bench to use tonight. Point guard Garland was back in action which is a big plus for Newport however he fouled out early in the 4th along with Guilkey and then Stull suffered a ankle injury. By this time only Pearson and Baldwin were left out of the starting five. Sharp had to take over the point position and did a good job - even sunk a three. The other two that were in I'm not very familiar with them but they held their own. St. Pius had #4 (I believe Murphy is his last name) good point guard and a three shooter. Also a #10 could hit the three for them as well. But overall IMO Newport should have beaten St. Pius but foul trouble and a injury surely did not help.

Newport 8th grade lost to St. Pius X by about 6 tonight. IMO Newport would have blowm St. Pius X away if not for foul trouble.

Yes you're right I would love to get a good group (not meaning just talent) to play together somewhere. However what prevents me the most is my job - I am in the professional field and also a supervisor in my field and sometimes have to respond with very little notice. My son would love to have the chance to play more basketball in fact I believe he would rather play basketball than baseball. He currently plays baseball for me and I have been very blessed to have some great assistant coaches that I can count on to take over the team when I am not around.

What is wrong with the Newport Middle school basketball teams? Does anyone have any answers? It just seems to me that they have talent but the talent doesn't put up the effort to win a game.

My prayers and thoughts are with the families.

I'm thinking this will be a close one. Newport will be fired up after beating NewCath - hopefully Coach Russell will play the same players that he used in the NewCath game to come out ahead.

Dayton should have a few new faces playing football this coming season. I heard that Jones might lace up the cleats. Jones is a great baseball player and has good speed and with some good coaching he would make a good wide out. There are a lot of basketball players that hopefully will play this coming season too. Coach Deaton needs to sell them on the program and get them on the field.

Cody Collins is a great kid and should be in the starting line up. McDaniels always produces and as far Greene - perhaps Russell will she what it takes to win a game - IMO Greene is a good offensive player but lacks on the defensive end of the court. I heard that Luther fouled out IMO he is lazy and now I hope Russell sees who wants to be there and who is just there for their own personal stats.

I do believe I stated that Lloyd would come out in the end on this one.

In the last meeting Newport did manage to get out quick on Lloyd but IMO I believe hat Lloyd will edge Newport in the end. Lloyd has good speed that can keep up with Green and Sizemore. Luther has some good skills but appears to be lazy. Darnell is starting to be more physical in the middle.

I like Manning because of his knowledge for the game IMO after he completes his career he will more than likely be an outstanding head coach in the NFL. Now my opinion on Favre is that he has accomplished a lot throughout his career and is a great quarterback and leader but I don't see him as being a thinker - meaning he has a toughness about him but not the mental talent that Manning has shown.

I agree with you - so many kids ride the bench and barely see any action and then once they reach high school they decide they have no chance of playing so they develop other interest. I know a few of these kids and they are usually the ones in the gym classes putting it to the so call high school stars. How's far as playing a lot of games during the season and others not getting enough playing time - there are a lot middle schools that do not play a lot of games because of transportation issues (as they state) and other cited issues (they state) so I guess that some coaches believe they must attempt to win at all cost and don't play a lot of their bench.

Just come across this and I wondering if this new turf field will be a practice facility or an actual home field for games.

I worked Christmas Eve from 6am to 4pm then picked up some overtime on Christmas at 11pm to 7am. I am hoping for a slow night tonight too.
