Article was in yesterday's Appalachian News-Express. Apparently Gilliam, a Junior lineman, had a bonafide change of address within the Pike County Central district. Yet, the KHSAA deamed him ineligible and now the family are seeking legal ramificatons. The kid did not see any playign time at Belfry and as I read it actually has been attending Belfry schools his life despite already living within the Pike Central school district. The big dispute of the matter is the fact that one of the exemptions to allow a kid to not have to sit out a year of eligibility is when a bonafide change of address is present,,, at which case the individual is free to appeal and have the commissioner wave the sitting out. When the commissioner was asked about the situation he said he hadn't even heard of anything about it HAHA.

Congrats Cards on opening up what was a fairly close game and flexing your muscles. Little tougher challenge coming to The Rock Friday...looking forward to it.

I have been high on the kid for a few weeks now, and tonight Andrew Elkins confirmed that he may very well be the X factor to determine our chances at a state title not only this year but the next couple years to come. This kid is getting more and more impressive every week. Tonight Elkins showed a lot of poise and some real heady reads in the belly series.:thumb: I also felt that both Phillip Hickman and Will Sutherland played awesome tonight on defense. Is it just me or does Hickman remind you alot of Michael Hackney from the state championship teams?

Score of interest. After setting the national record last week amongst much controversy, and after all the antional media attention, Matewan, who had not lost aside from two games they forfeited, was defeated by Tug Valley during Matewan's homecoming festivities. In the computer polls Matewan dropped from #4 to #19 after the ruling on the forfeited games and needed to defeat #15 Tug Valley to have a shot at the playoffs. The TV Panthers actually had an episode last year where their team quit during the middle of a game and left the field (think Boyle County situation). The Panthers helf record setting back Paul McCoy to well below 100 yards rushing.

Belfry dominates every aspect of this one: Almost 60% of Pburgs offense came on two plays, a busted play in the first half where Belfry had the QB sacked and he escaped,,,, and a very unsportsmanlike call by Derrossett to throw the bomb with his first string against belfry 3rd stringers with 15 seconds left, he also followed that up with an onside kick attempt. STATS (Belfry): Rushing: Chapman 12-120+, TD. Epling, 8 for 78, 2 TD. May 24 for 74. TEAM TOTAL: 316 yds Passing: Elkins, 5 for 7, 77 YDs, 2 TD Epling had around 200 all purpose yards including his yards receiving and a nice kick return.. he also had an INT on defense. Great ballgame for Phillip Hickman on defense with 3 sacks. Prestonsburg never showed the ability to sustain drives or hit the big play. They did a good job on May tonight

I really hope I dont come off sounding like a jerk but: 1. If Bretahitt truly was a top tier team this year then they wouldn't be caught looking ahead..let alone to LESLIE COUNTY 2. Scrimmages have little to no bearing on the regular season... proof in point Highlands hung up 50+ on Male.... Johnson Central beat Belfry by like 4TD's... two years ago Sheldon Clark defeated Ironton, OH in a scrimmage. Putting stock in a scrimmage is like choosing your Super Bowl Champion from Pre-Season games. Sure you may be able to see a couple things about personnel, but it is impossible to judge a team in terms of consistent performance. With that being said I am REALLY excited to see Breathitt regain their winning ways..especially with such a young team. They have quite possibly been the most consistent 2A power over the past 10 years and run a top flight program.

I have no trouble making a point.... just call me the extra point kicker because I may not be consistent for alot,,but you can usually depend on me for one. :thumb:

Cool so Western is even weaker than thought? I have not predicted Breathitt to lose, nor to win for that matter HAHA. When evaluating Breathitt what can you look at? Honestly? They defeated Harlan...who has defeated NOONE... they struggled mightily against the juggernaut known as the Cawood Trojans.. they defeated a Powell Valley team in a close game, PV has steadily been declining the past five years and are well below their normal form this season. I started the buy/sell thread and included Breathitt for one specific reason.... just like the other teams listed its hard to tell if their record is product of being a really good team, or really fortunate in their scheduling. If Breathitt can beat a mediocre Leslie this week convincingly and then take care of a pretty good Middlesboro then I will be convinced.

Somethign I have always wondered... how would a Bob Redman "Confusion" defense fare against a Tony Franklin offense? My personal belief is that if you can maximize your speed at DE and LB so that the screen game (both bubble and HB) and running game are neutralized, the pieces will easily fall into place on how to take a Franklin offense down. The screens and draws are the only form of semblence to any type of ball control, and it also opens up the deeper routes when the corners and LB's re lured into the flats. The best weapon against a Franklin offense though is a typically unprepared defense that can be exploited on the other side of the ball. Most Franklin-style teams run seperate line units and it seems as the majority of the talent is place don the offensive side of the ball.

This brings up something that I have wondered for a while.... why doesn't Belfry have an organized boosters club or a touchdown club in place? I know myself personally, as well as others I know, would love to take part in this (IF handled the right way and not in a political manner). Although the novelty of a video screen would be very amusing I tend to agree with Watusi on this one. I would much rather see improvements in the weight complex, an increase in seating on the visitor side, and other investments that would directly benefit the porgrams progression quicker. BUT... in that same breath I know that the popularity of Belfry football could easily translate to advertisisng dollars on the big screen that could also be used for the same purposes. Its a Catch 22 circumstance. *Sidenote...I have always wanted to see a Pirate ship built, with cannon, for the team to run through...don't know why..just always thought it would be cool HAHA

I disqualify Breathitt's stadium...although unique... due to one evry critical flaw. It is one of the, if not the, most visitor unfriendly stadium in the state. The visitor seating is minimal at best, you must tread through inches of mud to get there and once you do your view is obstructed by the helmets of the players and fear of falling off the rickity seats into the river behind you. When teams such as Belfry travel and pretty much are forced to sit on the covered home side the Bobcat fans have proved rude and threatening as well. Big thumbs down to Breathitt!

So who around the state is currently subscribing to the QVC deal of the month, the Tony Franklin Spread Offense? (ie the Entrepeneurial Spirit of Mumme Ball) Which teams are using his spread offense this year? How do you beat it? Is it worth the money?

PIKEVILLE is a dangerous team.... Do I think they will win the state title this season? NO WAY Do I think they can cause serious matchup problems for most of the teams in the state with their backs? yes sir The Panthers are a rapidly improving team with a complicated running game. Their biggest knocks are their youth and the fact that they tend to be an emotional roller coaster (probably directly associated with youth).

Agreed... for example in the teams I listed if you take the Highlands state title team as well as the X team in 2004... if those teqams opted to be passing teams with the athletes they had then no doubt they could have been successful... win the state titke as a passing team? no.... I honestly feel that balance never hurts..in fact one of the biggest upsides to Belfry this season is their Soph QB who has the potential to actually complete passes.... but I honestly think a team that is 95% run can cope better on the HIGH SCHOOL level and on the whole be more successful than a team who is 95% pass. There is just more margin of error that can occur when you are putting the ball in the air that much..plus a predominant running team dictates game tempo and fatigue. To tie back to the conversation: If Mercer has the horses to not require a passing game then the Casey County writer will be eating crow.. but just some food for thought...

CAM...Central is an enigma. To put it in perspective... if Belfry played Central I am willing to bet Central would have two to three times the athleticism and speed of Belfry,,, but Belfry's physical,disciplined, fundmentally sound playing style is the thorn that rests in Central's side. The Yellowjackets may very well have been the most talented team in 3A 4 of the past 5 years... but Boyle County has been the perverbial Central slayer with their style of ball.

Captain sarcasm...slow your roll. Wasn't saying that every year the team with the best running game will win state... just validating the fact that no matter what class, no matter what year, it is not a prerequisite to be a great passing team. With that being said, all the teams who have won the title without a passing game all share the common entity that they had great line play, solid talent in the backfield, and a defense that matched their physical style and could shut down the opposing defense (which you actually hit the nail on the head). I know Trinity fans have a short fuse...but geez! LOL:thumb:

Now that you mention it: 1A 2003 Danville 2004 Beechwood 3A 2004 Highlands (Jet SWEEP!) 4A 2004 St. X 2004 was definately the year of the running game.... and proof in point that a passing game is overrated if you are truly dominant at what you do.

HAHA if oen thing has been proven in the past three years in 2A is that a passing game IS NOT A QUALIFICATION TO WIN A STATE TITLE! Belfry vs. Etown Belfry vs. O'Cath Russell vs. O'Cath 3 championships.... less than 15 total passes combined
