Everyone want to know why the basketball program is struggling, look at the above posts. Perhaps Willie should step down and let all of the armchair parents coach the team. I do believe that Willie needs to make himself more visible to the younger players in the community, but he is one of the best basketball coaches in the 9th region and that is a fact just ask the other coaches in the area. And I with Oldbird want to know who is getting the shaft? I know there have been several occassions this year where at least one or two of the sophomores were not eligible to participate. All of the above rhetoric is just another example of why Highlands athletics is and always will be football, football, football.

These two guys likewise have no varsity experience playing on the offensive line. Ball and Hurtt should remain defensive players only and Stein should be left at tight end. Dale's non belief in power backs is very evident when they play the better teams on their schedule and cannot get the tough yards down by the goal line and have to settle for field goals or attempted field goals.

No they do not seed in this district. 2 haves always wanted to do it and the other 3 have not for obvious reasons.

How many of the QB's in the past were skilled enough to play on defense? I would like to go back a few posts and revisit the moves of Stein and Ball to the offensive line. Why is this move being made? With the success that the freshman teams have had in the past few years, are there not enough lineman capable of playing/contributing at the varsity level without moving these two guys to positions that they have never played to the best of my knowledge.

Why is Boone a better comparison than Highlands? Boone beat Highlands on a shot at the buzzer and I believe has lost 4 in a row or 4 out of 5.

This has been a long time coming and I am glad to see it happening. Also glad to see that there are 30+ games on the schedule this year rather than the 15-20 and out in the first round of the district.

That is what they are trying to do this year. Why do you have to have a 6'5" center that plays for no other reason than he is big? Remember that the kid that played inside with this group of kids is now on the team at Moeller.

Highlands finally finds a way to win a close game. Teddy Connley hits a 3 at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime and then the Birds are clutch at the line to come out on top. Perhaps the best thing that could happen to this team was learning to play without McGraw and Simpson. Drew Simons has stepped up his game as has Michael Eaton. When Nic Simpson gets back, this team could sneak up on some teams late in the season.

What committee have you discussed this with? I think it could be run outside of the Junior Football League umbrella, but should be organized in much the same manner as it was previously. Perhaps this is where LN could provide some legal advice on how this league should be formed. My guess would be as a non-profit entity as it was before, but the big question I would have is liability insurance. What suggestions would you have regarding the selection of coaches? That was a big part of the problem when the city took over the league.

Does Dale Mueller work the crowd before a game on Friday night? I think that he does not. How active is Dale in the Junior Football League? Answer, not very much. It is up to parents in this community to get the league up and running again. If you would like, send me a PM and perhaps you can join in on trying to get this thing up and running.

Does a kid really make the decision that he is going to be strictly a basketball player by the 7th and 8th grade? How many kids are there that are strictly basketball players on the current team? The only ones that I can think of are McGraw and Simpson and those are the two kids that he got playing time as freshman. Who are the kids that play strictly basketball in the 7th through 10th grades? I would be willing to bet that the only team that excelled without football players playing a significant role was the 1979 team. All others had one or more that contributed to the regional championship. To answer LN's question, I had no one in particular on my mind. Just know that they performed well on that level last year and do not appear to have much to show for it based upon what I have seen of the JV games this year.

My question for those in the know or think they are in the know, what does Willie need to do? I keep hearing complaints about this group of kids and that group of kids and why does this kid not play etc, etc. He can only coach those kids that come out for the team. The reason that these kids do not come out is that they are told how they need to get in the weight room to get bigger and stronger for the next football season.

I had to leave the game at about the 7 minute mark of the 4th quarter and Boone had spurted out to a 7 point lead. Nick Simpson was on the bench have his ankle looked at after getting hurt on the final play of the 3rd quarter. According to the paper, Jared Stewart was the leading scorer with 17. From what I have seen this year, the Birds play well in spurts and if they can gain some consistency they can beat anyone in the 9th region on any given night. The question is whether they could play well on back to back nights.

I just have one question in regards to the assistant coaches. It seems that there are close to 2 dozen on the sidelines on game night, how many of them are in paid positions?

Didn't Highlands play Dixie on Monday? What was the result?

Not going to be fun for the junior footballers. What a mess this will be.

I do not know that it ever dissolved, rather the city took it over and did a very poor job of running it to the point where last year there were not enough kids interested in playing. Agree with you 100% that if it needs to occur, people need to step forward and get it done. So far I have only heard from 1 other person with an interest in getting this going.

Highlands went 12 deep again last night. Surprisingly little time for Simons and Wise. Kruse was very impressive off the bench and Ball put in quality minutes. Kiernan played okay considering he is just coming off the football field. NCC does not do a very good job of getting the ball in his hands down on the blocks IMO. There were several instances where he was handling the ball 20 feet away from the basket. Good win for the Birds. Expect a miniture football game on Friday at Brossart.
