It is a little surprising to me and im sure it's a little surprising to the Bulldog fans. From what I heard from the Bulldog faithful was that NKY should be worried now that Holmes is at full strength. Their last 2 wins havent really been that impressive and they still are struggling with putting up points.

Highlands is a team who likes to really slow the ball down and make the game a defensive battle. You'll never see a game with them in the 60's or 70's. They just don't have the horses or talent to put up points like that so they work the clock and look for the best offensive shot. Plus this is only Holmes second game back at full strength. I dont think Coach Henley is sweating too much over a 14 point win.

 

Does he think they can do batter? Absolutley. But right now I think his main focus is just getting not only Duran but also the whole team back in the swing of things and playing with one another at both ends of the floor.

If you win 2-1...you still win. This was not a 30 point blowout but you still win. As we have seen Holmes does not blow people out... Even when they won region 2 years ago At times tonight they looked very good other times it was a slooowww game after seeing tonights game...

Although the Birds had issues with getting the ball in the hole, they stilled played a decent defensive game. They gave it their all and kept it 'interesting' for about 3 periods. It wasn't exactly a pretty game, especially with so many missed open layups, sometimes unnecessarily rushed. I wish Willie would have played the tall blonde kid more than the last minute of the game. In his one minute he impressed me more than the first 31 minutes of shabby post play by the Birds. What kept the Birds alive is that the Dawgs weren't exactly burning up the nets either. They had their moments of flash with some sweet dunks by Rice and Henderson. They kept decently paced so as to not squander the small lead that they held most of the game. A better shooting team, such as CovCath' would've went home the winner tonight by a similar margin as the Dawgs ended up with over the Birds. Arnold played a pretty good game of cleanup in the early running. Simpson played the first half and his services were badly needed in the 2nd, but I'm assuming that he's still taking it a litte easy because of his injury. He manuvered pretty nicely but I'm sure some of his spin moves taxed him out a little and he needed to hang the shoes up for the night. DJ got some limited minutes tonight and he seemed charged and excited to be back on the floor. He ally-ooped (sp?) Rice for a snazzy momentum changing dunk in the 4th quarter that resulted in a 'T' on Rice for hanging too long, but was the beginning of the end for the Birds. Austin Hill looked like he hurt his back in the 4th. I think he's been riddled by back issues since last year. He put in quality minutes before taking a seat for the night. DJ guarded Simpson in the 1st half which seemed interesting just on the fact alone of how good both are and that both are recovering from injuries. I wish both of them the best of luck and hope that their injuries don't hamper either of their promising futures. It looks like the Bulldogs round out the year with a pretty decent schedule. It will be interesting to see if they can tie up their loose ends and be ready come tournament time for the likes of the Blue Colonels. The Holy Cross game should be very interesting in the Districts, but I think that the Bulldogs have an edge there because of a deeper bench, but if Ryan and Sorrell get hot, who knows, it could be 2 Regional tourneys in a row held at Holmes where the host doesn't get to do much more than serve up food and beverages in the hospitality room. I'm not playing any favorites though. May the best TEAM make the drive to Lexington in March. I'll be rooting for the 9th no matter what.

A team such as Highlands is who Holmes will stuggle with a bit beacuse they do slow down the tempo of the game an they are very physical and big. Seems as though Cov. Cath. didn't exactly blow them out either. So lets not get to excited by the margin of victories wether it be by three or fourteen points. As I've posted before in the Holmes/Newport game summary Holmes has a tendency to playdown to their opponets. They sometimes tend to coast once they get a lead and only play good enough to hang on for the win. Yes this may come back to bite them in the end, but only time will tell and I look forward to seeing this play out hopefully all the way to the ninth region championship and hope it is a Holmes/Cov. Cath. matchup. Might be the best region championship game in the state.

True, but as said before, "when it is CovCath-Highlands, you can throw out the scores and records." Nevertheless, I understand that a 14 point margin for Highlands is like a 20 point margin for another team due to the few shots that HHS will take per game.

Highlands holding the ball and slowing it down is based more on history than the current reality, IMO and most of the people saying it (outsiders or malachicrunch are people whose sample of seeing the birds is limited).

 

I think if anything because of this teams limited scoring ability in the half court, Willie has done his best to try to get the guys to push it and score in transition.

Is Simpson back for Highlands?

He played a little. But for most of the 2nd half he was on the bench iceing his ankle.

Highlands (5-15) -- Simons 15, Simpson 7, Stewart 5, Hurtt 3, Connley 2 Eaton 2, Wise 2.

 

Holmes (15-8) -- Hill 18, Rice 18, Arnold 6, Henderson 6, Jefferson 2.

HHS scored 12 points the 2nd half while Simpson iced his ankle. When he was in the game it was a good game. If he gets 100% healthy HHS is very scary come district and regional time.
